SCEE's Darren Cairns and Liam Wickham have spoken at the Develop conference, making strides to distance Sony's Home product from social networks. The PlayStation creator's official stance seems to be that Home is all about the games, and not about the socializing.
"Home is not a social network - it's focused on games," stated the two men. "It's a visual representation of the PlayStation community."
That's an interesting suggestion, not least because up until now, Sony has done nothing but talk about Home as a social network. When Phil Harrison was still with the company, he referred to Home as a "3D social networking service." Harrison stated that Home was "not just about Sony products and Sony games," but was "a much wider network of connected spaces." Sony has also gone on record as stating that they will be "implementing a fully featured social networking experience within Home."
See, this is the problem with Sony. It can't get its stories straight. Sony already knows what a lack of focus and official definition did for the PlayStation 3 in its first year, and Home isn't even out of the gate before we're having conflicting definitions of what the product can is. Sony needs to keep its facts straight, because customers and developers alike will be confused as to what it is Sony actually offers, and that's not a good scenario.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Like less lame than second life and with gaming integration(you know trophies n shit)
That's the thing about Sony PR, Jim. Every time Sony says something, even if it contradicts everything they've been saying all along, that just means that the next time I walk into a Gamestop I'm going to hear some Sony fanboy repeating it at the counter like it's what he's been saying all along.
I'm so confused! WTH Wasn't/Isn't that was people are doing in Sony's Home (Beta) already..? Ohhhh I know. They don't want it to seem like by playing Home you will be social.. I think..? >.<
I'm not going to hang around some virtual lobby for 20 mintues waiting for someone to play with.
I want to play whatever game I want; & be able to get a message while i'm playing it & accept/switch over immediately to play w/ friends.
Good call
The PSN isn't free, I paid €200 for it.
But, since Second Life is social, it is like monkey crack.
But to the main point though, ya they did say it and then they say its not. That is kind of goofy they might of slid by if they didn't add a definitive comment about it NOT being a social network. Some other the other exaggerations Jim used are kind of really under the radar. Its not exactly a company of 5 bloggers or something.
Oh for fucks sake Sony.
Uh, yes it is. Look at the back of ur PS3 box. It's right under Features.
How is it NOT trying to be a social network? You meet different people, chat, play arcade or full games, dress youself up, watch video clips, etc.
Sony also has the only real backwards compatibility.
"alright mother fuckers, we have some games. They are coming and they are gunna shit down your throat after having sex with your girlfriend. Here's the games...cue the naked chicks holding placards of the game covers...alright there you go, go play the demo's in the lobby"
thats my speech...20min long and I just shit all over everyone without any confusion and double speak.
I really want to see it finally get released to play around with it, but in the end it is only a glorified version of Second Life with a lot more restrictions.
Also seeing how the trophy system is supported by noone, most likely we won't see much Home support either.
Sounds like a social network to me...
By the way it's nice to see that sony's development cycles are becoming longer and longer...home is taking like 3 year at least, Gran Turismo 5 I don't even know anymore.
I'm actually looking forward to Home!
