Sony's Tretton doesn't like leaks photo

Sony's E3 press conference had the wind taken out of its sails somewhat, thanks to the PSPgo announcement leaking itself onto the Internet several days ahead of the official revelation. Sony boss Jack Tretton made a few offhand remarks about leaks during the conference, but a recent interview with CNBC reveals that he's not at all amused.

"People don’t respect confidentiality in this industry," argues Tretton. "It’s tough enough to keep a secret within your own company, much less when you speak to third parties."

Tretton also criticizes the industry for looking too far ahead, especially when it comes to the idea of a PlayStation 4: "This is an industry that has trouble focusing on today. We want to constantly talk about tomorrow.… You have to prepare for people to know things in advance. The frustrating thing is they only know a part of the story and that opens up a lot of conjecture and misinformation that ultimately waters down the reality when you roll it out."

Tretton talks about the iPhone versus the PSP, stating that if the iPhone gets people into gaming, that's a good thing, as it gives him a chance to sell those people a PSP. On the subject of games, Tretton adds that it's "very difficult" for him to perceive God of War 3 being played on a Wii, but that Sony's motion controller could easily handle it.

Finally, Jack closes by hinting that the motion controller could work with games already on the market, calling such a notion "absolutely conceivable."

I do agree that we are getting too focused on the future of gaming/games and overlooking some of the awesome stuff that is happening in the here and now. I think that's really just part of the tech-world we live in though. We know there is something newer, better, and more awesome around the corner... why not speculate about what it might be?

Tretton is that sad mess of a human being you can only shake your head at in disappointment.

sonys whole plan for the ps3 is this 10 year thing so even they have to look to the future at times or otherwise their just running blind.

It definitely takes the wind out of your sails going into a huge show like E3 having one of your big announcements leaked by someone else. I can understand how some people get excited about leaking information like this, probably gives them a big nerd boner, but I agree with Takeshi, I wish people could keep their fucking mouths closed. If it was from a 3rd party company and they signed a non disclosure agreement with Sony about the PSP Go, more than likely so, to not talk about it and Sony found out some employee over there posted the photos that leads to lawsuit time. So for one persons fuck up it could cost that company a lot of money, maybe future projects with Sony, and that emplyoee would lose their job probably.

Tretton must be fairly green if he's bemoaning the longstanding fact that his market is affected/driven by speculation. People are always looking forward, particularly investors. Not to mention the fact that gaming is awesome, and people always want to know what the next wave of tech will bring.

That's not the problem anyway. Don't talk about R&D to so many third parties that you can't track down the leak.

This is a hilarious headline juxtaposed with your recent forum thread on Tretton and Major Nelson.
