Sony's spending how much on a PS3 ad campaign? photo

Sony is looking to kill this Christmas. The PlayStation 3 Slim and the price cut are being backed up by an £82 million advertising campaign that kicks off in the UK tonight, and will run through Christmas. Recession? Sony laughs in the face of it.

This will be Sony's biggest campaign for the PS3 since it launched in 2007. A series of TV commercials will big up the functionality of the system, showing off features like Blu-ray, downloadable television and movie content, and BBC iPlayer access.

"Two years after launch PlayStation 3 is realizing its full potential," says Alan Duncan, UK marketing director. "The console is moving beyond gaming and gaming is moving beyond discs."

£82 million. Some of us couldn't dream of earning that over the course of our lives, and Sony is spending it in the span of four months. It must be brilliant to be a huge corporation.

This is rebranding bitch.

Seriously anybody else (most likely non-PS3 owners) feel like this is an entirely new system launch or something?

This is how you relaunch your system Microsoft. Make it both sexier AND work. Crazy right? Now gimme a sexy 360.

Giant percentages of any successful company's budget goes into advertising.
The stuff works.

Is everybody on the Sony payroll like this?

Wait, "beyond discs"? Isn't the Blu-Ray DISC one of the main selling points of this thing?
Or are they planning on releasing some kind of digital distribution with their new PSSlim?
I'm really confused by that ending statement.

Sony's UK marketing director is called Alan Duncan? Isn't the Shadow Leader of the House of Commons called Alan Duncan?

Two years after launch? That money could've funded a whole new game! So many good games abandoned...

I just hope they change their advertising campaigns... if it's another artsy campaign like so many failures of the past - they might just as well flush all that money down a very big toilet.

(Hit enter too soon) of course this is assuming the ads are more universe of entertainment, and less everything else they did after that.

We're a lot closer to three years after launch than two, and some of the key changes (like the slim model) aren't generally available to consumers yet.

This relaunch is exactly what Sony needed in my opinion... shame that paying $82 million isn't enough to make gamers forget the how the PS3 has struggled over the past 2 and 3/4 years, but for people buying in now (or finally upgrading from last gen) this could be just the push they need.

Well judging from Sony's past PS-brand advertising this could be the most controversial Christmas ever.

This is exactly what Sony need. The general population doesn't understand the value of the PS3.

"Two games machines, one is £150 the other is £250 and everyone seems to have the cheap one"

Finally Sony will get a chance to educate the non-hardcore-blog-reading public as to just how much a PS3 does and to justify that awesome value price of £250.

Fingers crossed that Sony manage to get the point across properly, and that it's not lost in translation when using Japanese strategies to market to the Western public.

Sony should do very well this Holiday season. Very well. Like in America, I predict moving to within 5 million of Xbox by March 29th.

They should save millions and just plaster that "new logo" all over the place.

Finally. Sony have had a terrible advertising campaign in the UK, I made it a point in one of my blogs (as have other people).

Hopefully this will raise some awareness of it. Thing is, the PS3 is doing the best in the UK, which is odd considering it has the worst advertising over here. Maybe they should focus more on the US.

All or nothing.
Do or die.
Sony will soar into the sky
or crash and burn.

It's nice to see Sony trying to sell their console.

£82 million pounds is $134 million dollars. That's 328,000 consoles they'd have to sell to break even on it if the consoles cost nothing to make and they got 100% of the profits tax free xD The games is where they're hoping to make their money but it's still redonkulous to think about :)
