Sony is looking to kill this Christmas. The PlayStation 3 Slim and the price cut are being backed up by an £82 million advertising campaign that kicks off in the UK tonight, and will run through Christmas. Recession? Sony laughs in the face of it.
This will be Sony's biggest campaign for the PS3 since it launched in 2007. A series of TV commercials will big up the functionality of the system, showing off features like Blu-ray, downloadable television and movie content, and BBC iPlayer access.
"Two years after launch PlayStation 3 is realizing its full potential," says Alan Duncan, UK marketing director. "The console is moving beyond gaming and gaming is moving beyond discs."
£82 million. Some of us couldn't dream of earning that over the course of our lives, and Sony is spending it in the span of four months. It must be brilliant to be a huge corporation.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Seriously anybody else (most likely non-PS3 owners) feel like this is an entirely new system launch or something?
This is how you relaunch your system Microsoft. Make it both sexier AND work. Crazy right? Now gimme a sexy 360.
The stuff works.
Is everybody on the Sony payroll like this?
Or are they planning on releasing some kind of digital distribution with their new PSSlim?
I'm really confused by that ending statement.
2 mill spent on adverts 80 mill pocketed on second home.
This relaunch is exactly what Sony needed in my opinion... shame that paying $82 million isn't enough to make gamers forget the how the PS3 has struggled over the past 2 and 3/4 years, but for people buying in now (or finally upgrading from last gen) this could be just the push they need.
"Two games machines, one is £150 the other is £250 and everyone seems to have the cheap one"
Finally Sony will get a chance to educate the non-hardcore-blog-reading public as to just how much a PS3 does and to justify that awesome value price of £250.
Fingers crossed that Sony manage to get the point across properly, and that it's not lost in translation when using Japanese strategies to market to the Western public.
Hopefully this will raise some awareness of it. Thing is, the PS3 is doing the best in the UK, which is odd considering it has the worst advertising over here. Maybe they should focus more on the US.
Do or die.
Sony will soar into the sky
or crash and burn.
It's nice to see Sony trying to sell their console.
BAH.....you can keep your SLIM....I'll take my full featured Launch Day PS3....Mwahahahahaha!!
