As much as I hate to be 'Negative North', there's no denying that Sony has had a pretty hard time this past year or so. The gaming community in particular has been very down-in-the-mouth about Sony's products, and the sales of these products have been trailing behind all of their competitors. That's why it is nice to see some positive news like this about the giant Japanese electronics company for a change, although not much of the good news comes from the gaming division.
Gamasutra tells us that Sony has announced a doubling of profit in their first quarter financial reports. They are up from last year's ¥32.3 billion yen to ¥66.5 billion yen ($540 million) profit for the quarter. Depreciating yen rates and increased sells of televisions and cameras have managed to help the company out, although the PS3's 'stragetic pricing' seems to be holding back the company's game division. The problem is that the PlayStation 3 costs more to make than they're selling it for.
It should be said that the game division's revenues are up 60.5% from last year's same quarter, and they credit the increased sales of PS3s to that. This makes for an overall increase in sales and operating revenue, 13.3% over the same quarter last year.
Does this deserve a 'Hang in There!' motivational poster or what?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Both next-gen consoles are making their parent companies lose money for the record, and since I'm PS-TRIPLE FO LYFE I'll just go ahead and point that out :)
Excellent post Riser Glen. Let me add some fuel to the fire.
What no mention of the Wii, which is making money for Nintendo for every console sold...
BuckF1tches, lol
/sarcasm=off
He's busy not reading articles that point out that MS lost lots of money on the 360, as pointed out twice already.
but BOTH Sony and M$ are paying for it now since neither of their console sales have been anywhere near original company statements... Sony took it even further to the extreme, they've been switching SKU's (aka hard-drives) like crazy trying to sell those beasts at a profit...
