As far as Dave Karraker, the man behind the media curtain at Sony is concerned, all the bad publicity that Sony has faced is all just one big misunderstanding on our part. Luckily for you, he's ready to fill those educational gaps you've acquired, for a cool $600 or so.
During a "shoot the bull" session with Gamepro, Karraker was quick to point out that a)The media doesn't play fair, and b)The PS3 really is a bargain.
More of the Sony spindoctor, after the jump.
You see, it's all a matter of perspective, says
Karraker:
I am confounded by people who say they are true gamers but all they do is look for the negatives in a system, or a company, or in the industry in general. Some media, in particular, are just too easily caught up in all the bashing. It feeds on itself, and to what end? How do you benefit the real gamer by bashing on something? These are very smart people who can see through most of the BS.
A lot of the perceptions are not justified and seem fueled by people who don't have all the facts or have some kind of axe to grind. I think you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who wouldn't say PS3 is an amazing piece of technology. Yeah, the price of PS3 is higher than other system, but look at what you get - the Cell processor, Blu-ray Disc, built-in hard drive, HDMI 1080p, Wi-Fi, the SixAxis. That is a lot of truly cutting-edge technology in one box.
Now before you get all teary eyed and make a bee-line to the shady part of town to sell a kidney in the hopes of raising enough cash for the goodies, keep in mind that all he is doing is giving the PStriple the good old PR spin by focusing on what the Blu-ray player could be in the future. Trouble is, we all live in the present, so dropping that kind of cash for a system that has nothing at the moment game-wise to set it apart from the pack isn't all that attractive .
I hate to sound like Captain Obvious here, but what Sony needs to focus on is bowling us over with a series of great games -- a feat not seen since the PS2 days. The recent Gamer's Day was certainly a step in the right direction, but it's hardly enough to keep any momentum going.
The PS3 is going to take hits for its lavish price, but nothing makes that dollar amount sting less than knowing that you are dropping loot on a machine that offers an experience you can't find anywhere else. With the news that highly anticipated titles are either going multi-platform or have been pushed back to later dates, the PS3 is looking more and more like an expensive condo with no tenants.
With all due respect to Dave (I'm sure he's a great guy), maybe it would be wiser to focus that educational spin internally to Sony, since customers already know what they want in a game machine. The ball is in Sony's court, and it's up to them to give us a multitude of reasons to part with that hard-earned dollar. If the games are that compelling and the PS3 is as great as Sony wants us to believe it is, then we need to start seeing the magic sooner, rather than later.

Great. Now go make some games with it.
I am confounded by people who say they are true Americans but all they do is look for the negatives in Bush's presidency, in Iraq or the government as a whole. Some media, in particular, are just too easily caught up in all the bashing. It feeds on itself, and to what end? How do you benefit the real Americans by bashing on something? These are very smart people who can see through most of the libersl spin.
What problem?
The Cell Processor 2
will ALSO be ahead of its time !!!
and all that stuff he mentioned
-the Cell processor, Blu-ray Disc, built-in hard drive, HDMI 1080p, Wi-Fi, the SixAxis_
DONT MATTER AT ALL
if there are NO GAMES!!!!
Yes, because all media is liberal based. Sorry it doesn't fit your neo-con lifestyle. Best of luck to you. I hear Michael Moore has a new movie coming out soon, better jump on that.
@brainderailment
You got out again.
Additionally, your point about being critical of america, are people not allowed to be critical of something to be labeled as someone who "supports" an ideal?
Do you think the US colonists were going to institute change from being a British colony back in the 1770's by agreeing with the British? (no offense Jim, whoever the fuck you are...)
People who can be critical and embrace the ideals of our country are some of the best citizens, because they keep the powers that be from abusing their powers for their own agenda. Or maybe you want Hillary Clinton elected so she can slap a 25% income tax on your paycheck. It's okay to be critical. It's your constitutional right.
(/soapbox)
its called balls.
oh but wait let me get a elite system for 500$buckorz! yea now im more advanced than a PS3! dam str8 yalz, hey... wheres my hd dvd... wtf?
I hope we pick 2 people who are making the most sense running up there.
Mike Gravel or Ron Paul. The rest are just real trash.
@brainderailment, when everyone else disagrees with you, it's better to show evidence supporting your claims and not call us morons with our heads up our asses. I'm not convinced I'm a moron so I'm not likely to believe anything else you say. Furthermore I've never seen bashing here on Destructoid and I've been reading since a couple weeks after the site came into existence. Please don't make it bad.
i'd hate to bring politics up here but what GOOD has bush done? rallying most of the nation into two wars that have made close to no progress what so ever? basically all we've done is dethrone/kill sadam but we still cant find a man who needs a kidney dialasis machine to live, who's family has close ties to the bush family? OH or the failed no kid left behind policy? yes lets give schools more money based on their test grades, so that the schools who need the money most get screwed. makes since. oh or don't forget the udder lack of border security where we are going to let them stay here so we have people to fill the jobs that need filled despite high numbers of unemployment as is. failed response to hurricane katrina cuz "he didn't know how serious the whole hurricane thing is". or the troop surge that seems to be working out so well MORE soldiers are dying and are getting kidnapped too!!! that troop surge is working fine cuz now the ones who aren't being blown up can look for the missing ones
what good has bush done exactly? i'd like to know that one cuz i sure don't know anything good thats come from him. maybe the press focuses on the negative cuz thats all there is.
"but look at what you get - the Cell processor"
ZOMG! Cell! I heard that can do a bajillion pixel shade reder-things per second!
It is true, smart people can see through the BS.
What advanced games are Sony bringing to the table? Blu-ray, which is just a larger storage device? Also, what average games are MS selling? The same games that are/going to be ported to the PS3? Seriously, it's okay to like the PS3, but don't be a dumb dick and not recognize it's faults(price+no games to justify price ATM). All 3 have numerous faults, yet it only seems to be the Sony fanboys who are dicks about their "precious". Get a life, it's a game machine who's only innovation is a new storage format. Whoop-dee fucking doo.
Blu-ray Disc, - its a cheap bd movie player... i'll give it that
built-in hard drive, - 1up on wii, still got nothing on 360
HDMI 1080p, - are there any games out that are actually worth playing in 1080p? either way this is good for movies
Wi-Fi, - my dslite has wi-fi
the SixAxis. - is not even as good as the dual shock let alone the next gen controllers!
conclusion: not much of a game system, but a really cheap way to watch pirates of the caribbean on blu ray!
Correct, at the moment, now I expect you to take back ur little post b4 this years end. Thing is that you still complaining about the games due to Sony/IBM/Toshiba hasnt teached Game developers how to use the cell correctly and full power, and thats what their doing currently, takes time buddy.
I would re-read brainderailment's comment and stfu if I were a sony-basher. M$ has only 1 really good game (Game the entire world should play), Wii has 0, PS3 has 0.
thats the way I look at it, so people complain about the Wii cuz its so last-gen is not funny, people complain about PS3 cuz its too expensive and supposedly *unnecesary* crap it has, and people complain about 360 cuz it brings more red rings than Sonic can get yellow, fake HDMI (not true 1080p), 3 friggin systems with no clue which one to get, why do I have to pick 3 systems and why is it that the 500$ system (ELITE) doesnt even come with a friggin HD-DVD player? wtf, and if I want to play with my friends and fully feel the experience of xboxlive i need to dish out a additional 50$ a year to do so.
Nintendo has been impecable at family games which i occacionaly enjoy, so even dough the wii is last gen im sure they will come out with fun games, But from what I see, Nintendo might head the way of the SEGA cuz I dont see them making another console if the Wii was the best they could come out with. PS3, just like PS2, had a terrible start, but will eventually be read like a book and next-gen games will be dropping likes flies, and M$ will just squeeze the juice of 360, till PS3 starts doing good, and when it does, then they will release the xbox720 with hd-dvd player inside, just to compete when sony starts kicking ass. oh not to mention drop the whole support of 360 to the trash and focus on 720, so all you 360 owners might wanna start making a tomb for it and save up additional 400$ for a newer system (with 4 different consoles to pick from!), dont believe me? wheres the xbox1 support now? came out much later than the PS2, yet i dont see new games coming out for it or still selling the system like the ps2?
I could really care less for a dvd format. Don't need an HD DVD or a blu-ray player right now. I care about games.
And no, I'm not an xbot or xboy or whatever the hell you call them. I loved my ps1 and 2, and I'll gladly get a ps3, when some good games are out, and hopefully they drop the price a bit.
No debate about the current gen, MS is moving on, the reason why ps2s are still selling like hotcakes is that a lot of people aren't willing to shell out 600 bucks right now.
If your kid needs a system, ps2s are cheap, and there are a ton of good games for it yet as you said.
what i dont get about ps3 supporters is that you always talk about the future, and how ps3 is going to be kicking ass. why not just buy a ps3 when it does actually kick ass and not now when its sucking balls? why spend a ton of money now for something sub par, when it will be better and cheaper in the future?
ps i fucking hate bush
Bush Prez = Best Economy in the History of the Free World. How else is unemployment at an all-time low and the Dow at at all time-high?
PS3 games = not any good ones. Who cares if they're library is almost as big as the 360's? For 120% of the price, I expect 120% of the library, and for all of it to not suck. Unfortunately, other than Resistance, there isn't a single reason yet to own a PS3. If there were, I'd own one. I'm really hoping the system does well, but I'm not paying $600 for a console to play MGS:4. All the other tight new titles that used to be Sony exclusives will be available on 360. DMC4? Yup, that's on Xbox. Assassin's creed? Yup, that too. Sabateur? Yup. Dead Rising? Oh wait, you CAN'T get that on Sony's $600 box.
Wii Games = Zelda is a great game. I'm sure you Sony Fanboys love to discount that fact without actually playing it, because you're too mature and hardcore to own a wii or a gamecube (those are kiddie/geriatric systems, don't you read destructoid?). I've also played more than a couple incarnations of Madden, SSX, and Tiger Woods, and my favorite versions of all those games are on the Wii. Yeah, they're definitely not as pretty, (especially madden, ick) but they're a shitload more fun. But maybe I'm actually an old man trapped in a 25 year old body.
now that said. i had hope for motor storm being the one game that'd make me interested in this system. lack of multi player and less than a handful of stages later, i'm really disappointed. Heavenly Sword looks tight, but one game's not gonna sway me to buy a system. and, i'm sorry , but Home and some silly platforming game like Little Big Plantet ain't gonna make people who are hardcore or casual gamers thrown down that kinda coin. Sony fanboys being the exception.
Damn I want an edit button here :(

I hate to break it to you, guys, but these two positions are easily reconcileable. Will the PS3 be a great machine? Yes, I firmly believe so. Is now a good time to buy a PS3? No.
This whole discussion has been one huge circle. Why the hate?
The PS3 will definitely get better and better. I’m already seeing it with talks of rumble, better online, more games, and a possible price drop. However, that price is a MAJOR issue. Just because you can afford it, doesn’t mean everyone can. The magic price point is $199, and the PS3 has a LONG way to go before it hits that. This isn’t an issue of whether the PS3 or the 360 is better; this is an issue of simple economics and math, and if you think the PS3 is going to catch up any time soon, you are living in La La Land. That’s my objective opinion.
Some media, in particular, are just too easily caught up in all the bashing. It feeds on itself, and to what end? How do you benefit the real gamer by bashing on something?
This I completely disagree with. If we, as consumers, aren’t vocal about the things we don’t like, then we won’t see changes. DK is trying to get the consumer to be quiet about the mistakes Sony has made so Sony can get into a more positive light. I say, fix your issues Sony, then we’ll talk. And next time, think about the consumer before you go and make a $900 console with no games (I don’t care if you want to win a format war).
Then again, I'm a fat guy and everything is about food.
Then you take a bite and everything explodes out the backside of the sammich into the lap of your girlfriend.
Next time order the Chick-Wii-A... Chicken, Pickles, and Ketchup. Cheap, easy to eat and tastes amazing.
there arent any games on ps3 that are worth playing...
there thats better! :>
and i'm hungry for some popeyes
Blu-Ray: Expensive and DVD works just fine for now.
SUXASSES: I hate to use hateboy lingo, but seriously, what is there to be proud about here? A terrible attempt to copy the Wii's innovation? Come on!
HDMI: If you want HDMI, go 360 Elite. Seriously, HD component works fine too.
The PS3 has MUCH better output than the 360Elective (i own both, don't think you can argue this point) and is designed with 5 to 10 years down the road in mind. The 360 will be a brick once the format war is decided on for movies... just the way it goes, all you xbots need to stop hateing on the 3 because it's better than your precious, and just realize that their might be a BD player in your favorite consoles future... Or at least just gloat over games like crackdown and bioshock instead of making yourselves look silly with failed technical knowledge.
