In one of the strongest attacks on Microsoft we've seen yet, Sony's VP of Marketing lashed out at the Xbox 360 and HD-DVD in one fell swoop during an E3 interview with Gamasutra. He started it off with a prediction that HD-DVD will be obsolete in just a few months, but it was the following quote that looks to be the real "money shot" of the interview:
"With the Xbox 360 you've got an inconsistent design, some have a hard drive, some don't, and none of them have Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD will be out of business in a matter of months. Is this a ten-year product? And by the way it doesn't even work. Do they want to be selling it for ten years and refurbishing them all for ten more years? I don't think that's a ten-year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I'd put that up against the PS3 any day."
Peter Moore responded in full, calling the whole thing preposterous, and making a quote of his own. Hit the jump for the rest of the story, including a special guest reference to Captain Obvious.
"Of course, the fact that Sony has an economic interest in making sure that it’s dead is interesting (Insert Captain Obvious here). I think his comments will be read with interest by folks in the European Union, and looking at the tactics the Blu-Ray forum has been using to ensure that retailers do things their way. Let’s just look at what happens this holiday. I think it’s kind of a preposterous statement. Within months? No."
You certainly can't ever accuse Sony of having executives that don't have any "stones." Even when faced with the harsh reality that they are trying to sell an experience that few people can afford, they forgo a long-term price cut, and instead focus on moving out some stock they plan on phasing-out anyway. They do all this, and still manage to forget that the cheaper consoles that they target are the ones that are actually being sold to customers -- while the PS3 continually finds itself humbled and alone. Does anybody know what Sony is thinking these days?

I'll admit, though I'm a big fan of all three big hitter, I'm a Sony man first and formost, so I hope they do alright come the holidays...
but again... wow
ps sony is stoopid
Shut.
Up.
Just shut up. Stop talking. All of you. Stop talking, release good product, and stop talking.
Please stop talking. Do yourselves and the industry a favor.
Shut up.
I suppose Sony would know, they have a good working knowledge of obsolete formats
can anyone say Betamax. Or Minidisk for that mattter
So true!
Please don't kill me...
It's easy really
Love the product
Hate the Company
Then they open their mouth... and my faith in their intellegence falls below the clouds again.
You're killing me Sony... you're killing me.
A console is only as good as its games, and including as many nifty ancillary features as possible in the PS3 isn't going to make up for a lack of worthwhile games to play on it.
In the context of the PS3 vs the 360, nobody cares about Blue Ray and how it may or may not be beating HD-DVD. We gamers just want to play games, and that's an area that Sony definitely needs to work on improving. Until they do, I don't think that they ought to be running their mouths like this.
Sony, a little humility goes a long way. Get your shit together, and then maybe people won't think you douche-bags when you say shit like this...
You would have to be very cynical indeed to believe that Sony forces their own formats (UMD and BluRay) through their consoles.
Oh wait, I am very cynical
Hmmm, guess I'm looking at things a little differently than a lot of people. I actually saw what Sony was sitting on, in my opinion while others were strictly games and games only.
Granted, you have every right to what you say since that is what you want, and in that aspect you'd be right. I'm not knocking on anyone, for I'm a gamer myself. But when someone comes out with a product and calling it an entertainment center, or constantly say what it's trying to do, which is have a machine that does multiple things and whatnot (ie. not just play games), I can give people like Sony a little more benifit of the doubt. They said, or at least the impression I got from them, is that the PS3 is supposed to do "everything" for you living room entertainment-wise... I don't think anyone can get that in one shot really... <more>
So its really a two pronged attack. If the PS3 becomes the videogame and movie standard, cha-ching. If it becomes either the videogame or movie standard, thats win for sony too, but I have a feeling they would rather have bluray become the dominant movie format because (and this is just my guess) alot more payola is made on movies than videogames, and sony would get a slice of that for each movie using their disc format.
Probably just my conspiratorial rantings tho. Enjoy your blurays
I always give a little more slack to people that say their trying to do something and people beat on them for... well... trying to do that something since it 's not EXACTLY what they want. As I've said in many forums, this is a little similar to how PS2 and PS1 started, and since I give those last two systems a good amount of time before giving them the Chuck Norris beatdown (without being dissapointed in the end), I'm going to do the same for PS3. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my humble opinion.
As for what this current thread is about... yeah... I agree...
SHUT UP SONY!!
<Yes, I try not to be too bias... lol>
See the PS2?
Do that again. I like that.
UMD.. ouch.
LOL
All posts/forums read like pissed fanboy posts when it revolves around these console wars.
But I'm willing to bet that the winner of the High Def DVD war is HD-DVD just for its name alone. HD-DVD is simple, it coincides with DVD and I don't see the ever growing acronym trend allowing for a 'Blue-Ray' product name to infiltrate its system.
They're both the same size discs, both need compressed HD footage to meet the size standard for the disc. Just different companies and a different reading/writing format.
This is just my estimate as I could really give a flying fuck about the entire HD DVD sham.
Remember when everyone was saying that the PS3 would sell simply because it has the words Playstation in it?
Yeah, the consumer isn't THAT stupid.
true, true...but I guess I'm more used to subtle jabs at a company rather than all out verbal attacks. It might be just my dumb opinion, but I believe companies should really be more civil in regards to each other. This really reflects bad on all parties involved.
People, are that stupid.
I was in same camp of thinking, that HD DVD would sell on the merits of it's name. Honestly, though, I could care less about either. But I was also reluctant to give up VHS. and I still play SNES. and my vinyl collection is MASSIVE.
Save the vinyl!
That picture is worth a thousand "Doh!"s.
I concur...
OH and to those saying BR will fail B/C other sony formats have failed. Just take a look at sales charts. looks like it is doin fine to me.
What the fuck? Are we a bunch of fucking 10-year-olds on the playground, Sony? Seriously, you want to show up Microsoft, beat them. Do better than them. Calling them names and claiming how much they suck just makes you look like a pathetic twat. There's no room for that shit, you little jerks.
Really, how long will Universal stay exclusive before it decides to multi-platform with Blu-ray? All things considered, i think it's only a matter of time...
Hell, even Microsoft doesn't have much to loose from switching to Blu-ray... since the HD-DVD is an add on, MS can just make a blu-ray add on... Sure, current owners of the HD-DVD add on will be pissed, but MS already has their money... MS will probbaly gain in that those who don't own one will now have the choice of either format... a choice that i think many would like to have
(possibly one reason for making HD-DVD an add on instead of built in... one it lowers the 360 price... two, damage control should HD-DVD loose)
Absolutely correct. my neighbors still swear by Betamax.
Its got teh bloo rayz!
I couldn't have said it better myself... even though I've said the same round about thing for almost a year now.
(repairs+marketing+manufacturing+buying exclusives=BILLIONS, 11.6 million consoles X$400=$464,000, 5.8 attach rate = 4 billion revenue
4 billion - 90% to publishers/manufactures/retail stores = 400 million off of software revenue.
6 million live users at $50 = 300 million
Gross revenue is just over a billion)
Sony will drop the price of the 80GB too, but guess what it still won't be enough. Sony and MS are both losing.
I sure hope money fights are fun, because investors will not be happy after another year of this.
