Sony's motion wand could herald Wii-to-PS3 ports photo

Unlike Microsoft with Project Natal, Sony wasn't looking to reinvent the wheel when it debuted the Sony Wiimote at this year's E3. It basically gives the PS3 the same functionality as the Wii with a little extra kick, but that's certainly no bad thing according to Capcom's Jun Takeuchi. In fact, he's stated that developers are rubbing their hands with glee at the opportunity to port Wii titles to Sony's big black box o' Blu-ray.

"Speaking to other developers in Japan, I've heard a few of them say they were delighted by the Sony motion controller because they can just port over their Wii titles to the PS3," he told 1UP. Hmmm.

This might be a great chance for PS3 gamers to get their hands on Zack & Wiki, MadWorld, No More Heroes and Muramasa, but of course this also means that evil sh*t like Carnival Games or Ubisoft's Latest Piece of Casual Crap II: The Crappening could potentially infest the PlayStation 3.

I'll err on the side of naivety and look forward to the Wii's more obscure third party games appearing on the PS3. Which Wii game would you most like to see slapped on a Blu-ray disc?

Now I don't know if I should buy NMH 2 on launch day or wait until it releases on PS3 instead. The PS3 version would have buckets of more win.

Awesome news!

Seriously, I will drop the Wii like a bad habit if the PS3 gets No More Heroes 3 and MadWorld 2.

If you're not shitting me...then I would TOTALLY buy No More Heroes.

Between Sony seeing a 300% increase in sales and now third-party developers looking to port to PS3...Sony is now looking promising.

I've always had hope! :D

This is actually what I've feared most from motion control: Ports.

The Wii saw an influx of ports with motion controls shoe horned, and now it looks as though the PS3 will get the Wii games as ports.

Except that for all but about 10 games, the motion controls were dire! They worked best when used sparingly... which is counter to the CHANGE GAMEPLAY FOREVER gimmick.

Perhaps, I'd prefer to see Sony get a little inventive with the motion sensing. Third-parties in the other hand wouldnt surprise me if they got a lot of distribution plans.

It wasn't super witty but "Ubisoft's Latest Piece of Casual Crap II: The Crappening" made me chortle. I'm so lame.

Will this work the other way though. Once the PS3 passes the initial storm of crap motion games and brings out some good games (like the wii occasionally does) will there be some ps3 > wii ports. Captain Obvious says no due to technical restraints but we can dream.

I don't recall NMH ever making much use of motion control. Only that whole high/low attack, which could easily be replaced by a single button.

Also boom blox on the ps3 :D

@ KVB- No More Heroes wouldn't be as fun without motion controls, in the same way that Mortal Kombat wouldn't be as fun without the fatalities. They aren't a constant part of the gameplay, but when they get involved, they count for a lot.

There are others, but my top two choices are obvious:

1. Tiger Woods PGA Tour
2. Boom Blox

Both games could be ported and see some significant improvements to their graphical and physics engines.

I still have some doubts though. What is the adoption rate of Sony's wand going to be? Will this be another failure like the camera - tons of potential, with virtually no install base (or games) to support it? And even assuming the games are there, will price differences (or the lack thereof) between PS3 and Wii versions have any effect sales?
ejamer's Avatar - Comment posted on 09/17/2009 06:57

One other question that someone here can probably answer: does the wand include a pointer? Because for most Wii games I enjoy, the pointer is much more important than actual motion controls...

I dunno.

Like you said Jim this opens the floodgates for "evil shit". Which I found hilarious by the way.

HOWEVER there is no denying that games like NMH have a larger base with which to produce fans (awful diction) than the Wii. If anything I could see more games coming out for Wii and PS3 simultaneously with PS3 getting sexier graphics...in the beginning. Inevitably the PS3 will sell more and it'll get more attention than the Wii so Wii versions drop in quality and now we're back to square fucking one.

Wait, couldn't Muramasa have been ported over anyway? wasn't it already designed to work with a standard controller.

I would also argue that MOST wii games worth a damn, either offer controller support, or use such a minimal amount of waggle that they could have easily been adapted to a controller. No More Heroes for example uses waggle to charge your sword, but that could have just been changed to mash L1 repeatedly.

If the publishers really wanted to, they could have already ported most wii games over to ps3 of 360 with minimal effort long ago.

Not to mention the blame they bear for releases games like Mad World exclusively for the wii in the first place, and then wondering 'OMG Why didn't sell??'

NMH without jaggies and high-res would be nice. I agree with Agnates though. I thought NMH looked really cool so I bought a Wii, NMH, and House of the Dead when NMH came out. I like Suda games (however retarded they are) so I bought the new one regardless of system. It actually sold the Wii for me.

Uh, sorry for the empty post. (weird that your blog platform doesn't catch those...)

Nobody should be worried about "evil shit" getting ported from the Wii. It isn't on the Wii because of the motion controls, it's there because the Wii is 1. very popular, even with the so-called casual gamers (remember that the PS2 also had a lot of crap?) 2. relatively easy to program for because of the low-end hardware.

Also I hope that Sony uses the same quality control methods they've been using up until now if this does happen. most crappy games o the PS3 trump most mediocre Wii games. I'd rather play Gengi: Days of the Blade over the Conduit.

I don't get it. People are asking for ports to the HD consoles from the Wii. From the Wii. From the Wii. From the Wii. You know, the same machine that was and still is derided for having poor graphics and underwhelming controls. Now, because the HD consoles are copying Nintendo and thereby legitimizing Nintendo's plan to pursue a new direction in gaming development, you guys want those games that you barely gave a shit about before on the PS3 and 360. As if by magic the games will increase in quality by an order of magnitude thanks to a simple platform change. Somehow, these motion controls make Wii-to-HD ports so simple. Not like there is an infrastructure difference that has prevented this from happening to games that don't already eschew motion controls. Not like there isn't a budget disparity between the development for Wii and HD platforms.

But there are good games for the Wii and you want them on the other consoles. You know what? If these games "didn't sell" on the Wii, as many of you assume, what makes you think anyone wants to invest more money into those projects? Wishful thinking? Happy thoughts? I am overwhelmed.

A high-def Okami port/remake would be downright glorious. Or Resident Evil 5 - Pointy edition. Oh wow, that would be FANTASTIC.

@ megaStryke

it's because the few good games on the Wii were games that were clearly put on the wrong system. No More Heroes and MadWorld sold like crap on the Wii due to it's family based marketing. Hell, Suda51 (creator of NMH) said that NMH2 is going to be the last in the series on the Wii. You gotta agree with the guy because selling only 100,000 copies of NMH worldwide in the almost two years it's been out is crap. Especially when it's on the highest selling console this gen. And did you see how the Wii LOST their exclusive game Brutal Legend? I wouldn't be surprised at all if 3rd Party companies decide to dump the Wii altogether for the PS3. Hell, Curruntly Dragon Quest X is a Wii exclusive, but this may change If it makes them the money they deserve then I'm for this.

you link isn't directly from Sony for one.

Secondly it's a whole bunch of GIF file.

thirdly it must have been before E3 because that demo showed a whole mass of functions we haven't seen on the wii yet.

until I can flail a mace or swing a sword with 1:1 tracking on the Wii (which the Motion Plus doesn't help with at all) then I'm not impressed. Besides I used to own a Wii so I can tell you, that it's all waggle.

I don't think Nintendo really cares. They're still selling their consoles at a steady, profitable pace, which means things have pretty much became a matter of administering this generation until they've got enough material on their hands to release a new console with different, innovative input options. Then, it will be a matter of waiting until Microsoft and Sony find out a new way to capy what they came up with without looking too much of a blatant copy.

I'm seriously glad my brother bought a PS3 and I'm very excited for what it and the 360 will do to motion controls, but it remains a very sad fact that they've so blatantly copied Nintendo's approach. Specially Sony. Man, it's almost pathetic watching those guys on the video showing something that's less impressive than Natal and less innovative than the Wii Remote, while trying to convince the audience that they've came up with a trully unique gaming solution.

Honestly, I'm most hyped up for Nintendo's next console. I still think they should keep the new Zelda for it and launch it with a huge bang by the end of next year. Which most likely won't happen, since that's when Super MArio galaxy 2 will be released for the Wii. Given this reality, I think they're in for a bumpy ride, specially after raising the bar so high when it comes to investors. The taller you are, the worse the fall.

Thanks to Agnates for clarifying the lack of pointer control options coming with the PS3 wand. For me, pointer controls are what make well-made Wii games worth playing most of the time. Ports like RE4 or Okami. New content like World of Goo, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Pro Evolution Soccer, or Trauma Center. Most of the games worth playing on Wii use the pointer and benefit greatly (in my opinion) from new control styles.

Motion controls are only really good for a small handful of titles (Boom Blox and Zack & Wiki) plus some sports games (golf, bowling, and tennis). That's why I'm amazed that Wii motion plus has received such acclaim, when even developers are saying that it's not needed in many cases.

"Besides I used to own a Wii so I can tell you, that it's all waggle."

If having an avatar means conversing with Steel Brotha, then I'm not sure that I want one. LOL

Jam jar? Fair enough... we be jammin'!

(By the way, I know that PS3 has Tiger Woods already... but without motion controls a golf game is totally not worth playing for me. Just my opinion. And Boom Blox doesn't need to be improved - it is totally awesome on Wii and could be a straight port no problem! Using the PS3's extra processing power for high-res graphics, upping the object limit in a level, or tweaking the physics engine certainly wouldn't harm the game though.)

That scares me that you have a point on the precision of the infrared for the Wii. If what you say is indeed true, then...crap. Precision, and by that I mean, if your hand moves a centimeter a point on the screen should move a centimeter, is VITAL for gaming. Especially, if Sony is even thinking about using the tech on an FPS
