Sony: Rival consoles 'on the way down' photo

Sony UK's managing director Ray Maguire has called out rival consoles, arguing that while the PlayStation 3 is still full of potential, other machines are already hitting their spiral period.

The comment came from the same discussion which saw Maguire justify Home's delay, where he also suggested that a lengthy development process leads to the creation of the most powerful gaming platform in history. Maguire is not a man who minces his words when talking about the glory of PlayStation.

"Yes, we might take a bit longer sometimes to bring a product to market, but when we do, we bring you the most powerful gaming platform ever to hit - and it will be something that will around for a very long time," waxed the Sony spokesman. "It's nowhere near even halfway through its lifecycle, and I could argue that some other competing formats are on their way down right now."

Sony has argued for a long time that the PS3 will outlast both rival consoles, but I think the platform holder rails to realize that such a boast is not exactly a good thing. If the PS3 is still Sony's principal platform when a new Wii SKU and a next-generation Xbox hit, it shall be the Black Box o' Blu-ray which is looking obsolete and past its prime.

Congratulations to Sony for digging its heels in and sitting in the trench for a long fight. However, moving slowly in an industry that passes you by at light speed is not always the wisest of decisions.

Lol that's what they said back in 2006. Appreciating such confidence though.

There's a duality to this sword. When the next Xbox comes out, will the PS3 then be the 100% lead platform since it would have a longer life cycle and the kit would essentially stay the same. If Microsoft finally ponies up and lays on the goodies (aka not cut corners) well then the roles become reversed.

It simply becomes a matter of where is PS3's limit. I think it would actually be nice if Xbox got a HD medium along with more advanced power. Then we can see third party games make a huge leap in graphics and tech.

I prefer that Sony wants long cycles on the hardware, instead of MS who seem eager to get the next one out, its just now that we are starting to actually see some creativity come out, on at least some of the consoles. Just look at the games that came out for the PS2 when the original Xbox was abandoned? They always overdo it in their statements but I agree with the principles.

The only reason it still has potential is because nobody's done anything on it..

Yeah that's right all you rival consoles, you're going down? Wait a second ... isn't the PS3 still the worst selling console right now? Now I'm confused.

What my mind can never comprehend with all the BS we heard about the specs of the xobx 360 and ps3 before they come out, and with all of the stuff they include or don't, why didn't they up the ram in these things?

That's the biggest thing holding back both systems, especialy the ps3. All this time devlopers spend working around ram limitations is insane. Was ram really that expensive when these machines were speced?

I'd take a 1GB of ram over bluray, or whatever any day of the week.

Damn you sony. Just when you start to impress me with your non-rrod's, non-pay-to-go-online, and your (recent) increase in *quality games, you shoot your self in the foot by saying something stupid like this. Now... now... now I'm going to have to wait a minute to think about a purchase.

@ TheGreatMango

Exactly. It's 'nowhere near even halfway' through its life cycle because the architecture is too complex for any developer to want to utilize it fully.

This thing was doomed from day 1. People want to play games! Lots and Lots of great games. Xbox has the games...Ps3 has the bluray. I'd take great games over bluray 7 days a week.

I don't understand the blatent bias of some of the user posts. How long can you keep saying the PS3 is lacking in games? 90% of everything that comes out is on both consoles. The exclusive games are on both sides of the table. Gears 2/ Resistance 2, LBP/Fable 2. Not saying they all weigh out the same, I have a feeling LBP is going to do amazing, but I'm sure Gears will outsell Resistance...All I'm saying is that it's a good time to have both consoles, because only having one means you're probably missing out on great games on both systems. Saying the PS3 is doomed is just stupid. People seem to forget that the ps3 is catching up to the 360 in games, and sales numbers...even though it was released a year later. It is just now hitting it's second birthday, and has a wider selection of games than ever.

@funran: People seem really biased against Sony around here. I thought the days when it was cool to hate Sony were over and people could actually start to actually take a look at what they are offering. Guess that hasn't reach out to some people.

Honestly I think the biggest boost to Sony's PS3 sales has been due to the clusterfuck that is the 360's hardware issues.

I wish the people at Sony would just keep saying: "Great and stable hardware, and here's a list of our great games coming out in the next few months."

And that's all.

@ funran & Steve Vice: I don't think anyone around here is hating on Sony. I think if you read more closely you'll see a lot of sarcasm dripping off of the comments. It's just fun to make fun of big wigs who want to mouth off about how their console is the end-all-be-all of consoles, especially when the console is the worst selling one of the current generation.

Hmm. well, in principle I agree with Sony's take on longer lifecycles, less with the borderline-trash talking which only serves to get the fanboys all itchy. But a couple years in and we're still talking about "potential"? And like somebody else said, by the time the PS3 is finally hitting the apex of its lifecycle curve, the new Xbox will probably be out (*shudders*). Whether that'll go the way of the Dreamcast remains to be seen, but even if it does, it's not like it'll hurt Micro$oft in any major way.

...as a PS3 owner, i think he should shut the fuck up and get back to work. where's my fucking potential? huh? godamn it.

and stop working on home. no one gives a rat's ass about home. it's a stupid fucking idea, and everyone working on it now wants to kill themselves because they know that the only reason they're working on it is because some corporate fucker higher up doesn't want to admit a mistake.

damnit sony - it's time for a purge of management.

I couldn't say it better myself.

Kinda hard to flex if there is nothing backing it up.

The other consoles are at their top? Well no shit, unlike Sony, Nintendo and X-Box have been doing what they are suppose to be doing...making games.

Yeah, keep talking the trash Sony, because you may have been pretty awesome last gen, sure are slacking it off.

xbox has better graphics horsepower, ps3 has horsepower allright. Multiplatform games still seem to run better on xbox360, even at this period. That should tell Sony to use ATI in their next consoles, because they got screwed by Nvidia.

Sony PS3 division recently announced that PS3 will never make its costs back - did I read this or was I dreaming? 150 dollar bluray players are becoming a reality very quickly and I can see less interest in a PS3 when this happens.

Doesn't bother me what a big wig at any company says, I have a PS3 and a boatload of good games to play already. I'm a happy gamer at this time.

I have Warhawk, MGS4, Uncharted, Motorstorm, Pixel Junk Eden and Monsters, R1, R2, Rock Band 2, and Wipeout HD just to name a few. All awesome games, and almost all exclusive to the PS3.

So shut up and game on everyone, all systems are awesome game platforms. Just pick your poison and have a blast.
