Sony regrets not publishing Demon's Souls itself photo

So, Demon's Souls was a surprise win for Atlus, being one of the few games published by that company to sell well in North America. The classic PS3 exclusive was one of 2009's biggest surprises, and that fact has not escaped Sony's eye. In fact, Sony's Yeonkyung Kim took enough notice to regret his company passing up the chance to publish it.

According to Kim, Demon's Souls' unique gameplay and unmistakably Japanese flavor caused SCEA and SCEE to balk, believing the game would fail in the West. Sony declined the opportunity to pick it up, letting Atlus reap the rewards instead.

"That was a mistake," laments Kim. "It should have come out as a first-party title."

It's a good job that we have companies like Atlus around to pick up the ball when other companies so readily drop it. Atlus deserved to publish that game more than Sony, considering its long history of giving us Westerners the type of games we might never get to play otherwise. Perhaps in future, bigger publishers can stop being so arrogant and realize that the unique and strange games they ignore are capable of selling, if only somebody has the balls to market the thing.

Atlus made a good score with Demon's Souls. Too bad for Sony , we played it and loved it.

Maybe next time SCEE will pull their "Not enough americanized" mentality up their asses and start supporting quality games like these.

Nintendo should do the same with No More Heroes... Or Microsoft with Deadly premonition... But whatever...

Yeah, seriously it's not like gamers know or care about anything from Japan. I mean I don't even know who made Super Mario Brothers or know anyone that does.

I fucking love this game. Unfortunately, the save files are copy protected so when my PS3 died I was sent a different replacement by Sony and lost everything. Don't know if I will pick it up again after losing 65+ hours of game time.

Atlus does a lot of great games and here's to them making more of them and sending them our way no matter what others may think.

Especially in light of this and 3D Dot Game Heroes, Atlus just strikes me as a company that loves videogames. Everything they publish feels like a loveletter to one gaming-related obscurity or another.

I got this game for Christmas and (being on break) beat it by mid-January. Just two months later, I got to thinking about it and had to go back for New Game+. There's something so alluring about it. Maiden Astraea is one of my favorite bosses in any game; the implied backstory for her and Garl Vinland is fat with depth.

I really hope Sony backs them on the inevitable sequel (unless that would hurt Atlus or From Software somehow). Demon's Souls 2 must be every bit as brilliant as the first.

Also, DLC for the ruined 6th Archstone? Pretty please?

I absolutely loved Demon's Souls (plus, I think the ulcer it gave me has finally healed) and Cubivore is my 4th favorite game of all time, but I've hated pretty much everything else from Atlus. Disgaea is stupid (well, no stupider than anything else from NIS) and I HATED Odin Sphere. They're pretty hit and miss to me. But I'll definitely get anything From makes from now on so maybe my opinion of them will change. That is, unless Sony gets its brain working enough to buy From's souls (*gasp* sequel confirmed!).

Well if Sony goes and publishes a sequel Atlus would clearly gain nothing out of the deal. If a sequel is made I honestly hope Atlus USA gets first dibs, they deserve the profit since they're the whole reason it was a success in the US in the first place. Plus Atlus deserves to have a few more successful franchises, given all the great niche games they release that don't garner big sales.

There is no game on the face of the planet that could possibly sell enough for Atlus to buy out a behemoth like S-E. (Not to mention this has more to do with Atlus USA, the publishing branch, than Atlus of Japan, who actually develops games.)

Over 500k sold in the US and may end up in the top 50 selling PS3 games of all time so far. Yeah they probably wish they did publish it. However, would it have sold as well without Atlus' promotion of the game? Though it has picked up solid sales over time, it had a 100k+ launch as well, and that nice Collector's Edition that I got...

I agree with you, Jimmy Jam. Atlus' continual faith in the western market has been a benifit to us all. Concerning marketing balls, Demon's Souls sales was largely due to word of mouth, not any media blitz (blogs excluded). Besides, what Atlus considers a success would not necessarily please bigger publishers.

I'm glad Atlus got a hit out of it. Hopefully, this leads to Sony developing and releasing more quirky Japanese games. And I'll probably get the 360 version of Agarest War because I want a disk.

I have a lot of respect for Atlus for the risks they take. Sony sometimes puts out some pretty innovative first party stuff as well, and I respect them for their honesty here. I don't understand how arrogance fits in the story though.

Good to hear Sony is sorry for not releasing it, but at least it generates sales for the PS3. If the title ended up on 360 as well, Sony would have really been regretting their decision.

@MountainGorilla, "the implied" YES YES YES YES. This is exactly what was so great about Demon's Souls and not just in Astraea's case. The entire world had an implied history. I wanted to gnaw faces off when people whined, "Derrr there's no story." BULLSHIT. It's sad a lot of people missed that point and that an actual imagination was needed for the game. Best game of 2009, hands down. Some minor tweaks to the combat and some new creatures/settings and they already have a sale right here.

Demon's Souls is a true giant amongst mere moral men. The best RPG this generation without a doubt! Also, it's interesting to note that Sony initially thought that Demon's Souls would only sell fifteen thousand copies state side. What a miscalculation, it has sold close to a quarter of a million copies to date!

I love the fact, that Jim "Fat ugly" sterling is shitting on Sony again.

If Demon's Soul was publish by Sony, he would be the first and last to shit on this game and never talk about it.

But now, sony admit their mistake ( WHICH IS A GOOD POINT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! )

And Jim the fatty ugly go shit about it.

Anything related to Demon's Souls stirs something crazy awesome inside this gamer. After I destroy Olympus in God of War III and save Cocoon in FF13; I do believe it may be time for a 3rd character play through. Looking back, I really wished I had gotten the collectors edition. I may cave and spend that 190 bucks someday.

ok at this point, if people don't get the fact this type of shit will do well in America, you haven't been paying attention to the audience you're selling to.

the same above statement could be applied to Yakuza and things in the same plain of "we skipped it cause we assumed it wouldn't sell".

That's what Sony gets for assuming.

Didn't SONY drop the ball with GTA IV being an exclusive? Not that GTA IV is as good as Demons Souls, but the point is there is a pattern here, SONY doesn't make good choices.

Atlus is basically my favorite console publisher right now. Sometimes they bring over a piece of crap, but most of the time I really enjoy the games they pick up. Big publishers need to realize that there is a growing market for niche games like Persona and Demon's Souls.

So, if they understand their mistake, then why 3D Dot Game Heroes is again published by Atlus?

And yeah, I'm soooo happy Sony didn't pick Demon's Souls themselves. If they would, I would never see my awesome Collector's Edition of the game. No way Sony would make such an edition for such a niche title.
