Sony, like an evil mastermind, has claimed that a PSP without a UMD drive was its sinister plot from the very beginning. While stroking a white cat, product planning chief Naoya Matsui swiveled in a massive black chair and confirmed that the PSPgo was always a part of the company's original vision, it was just waiting for the right moment to strike.
"We'd planned to release a PSP model without a UMD drive since the very beginning," gloats Matsui. "But if we'd simply released the hardware, there wouldn't have been much for everyone to enjoy. We needed to prepare the right environment for it first - things like the transferral [sic] of content with the PS3 and PSN, and PC software to manage content like music and movies such as Media Go."
According to Sony, digital content is now on par with physical games, which means the condititions are just right for the PSPgo. The proof of this theory shall of couse be in the sales. It's all well and good for Sony to produce a UMD-blessed PSP while waiting for this alleged grand scheme to come into fruition, but will too many SKUs spoil the broth?
Also, how many of you seriously believe that Sony actually planned this all along, and aren't just making sh*t up to look clever after the fact? I think I'd much prefer Sony to just admit that UMD was a silly idea and promise that they'll never do it again.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. tsk tsk. your bias is showing. You call Sony and evil mastermind when MS pays Rockstar 50 million for downloadable content? if you can't write a PS3 article without hate then let someone else write them or do you have fun making immature jabs at Sony?
I really hope they won't be able to sell these games over $20, especially when
they are able to cut out the middle man (retailers) and sell directly. They've
wanted this all along

try to do more then add your spin to other people's articles and not give credit Jim ;)
No Mr Sterling, I expect you to die. Oh wait, that was Goldfinger.
They do seem to have gone way out of their way to make UMD "viable". So I don't really buy it. Rumble is so last generation.
Try not to deliberately misinterpret the point of a joke in an article just to pretend that I am "zomg bias" against Sony.
Wow, Sony. You thought none of us would call you out on this?
Although I guess half the PSP market already owns digital copies of all their games anyway.
yep back in 2004 when DLC wasn't around...
Not to me. I'm poor!
I'm fairly sure Splinter Cell's downloadable levels came out on the Xbox before the PSP. /nitpicking
got me there good point. still Sony wasn't thinking about DLC until this gen.
Yup, yearly increased sales , a stable format for the future, phasing out what was once considered the most popular format of our time , companies lining up to get in on the action , yep blu ray was absolutely HORRIBLE for sony.
( now see if you can spot the sarcasm.)
back on topic this statement = BS, they saw an opportunity and took advantage of that ( and I'm not mad at em for it), but I'd rather they say that than this.
Are sony going to send me an Existenze style vagina when thir format dies, so I can just jack in? By then, they won't give a monkeys, anymore.
Is Blu-Ray really doing all that good? I keep hearing shit about how DVD sales haven't really decreased since Blu-Ray hit the market, and that Blu-Ray sales aren't exactly climbing. Then again, what the fuck do I care? I like the format just fine, but if it died tomorrow I wouldn't shit myself with worry over it.
What people here seem to forget is that from version 1.0 of the PSP firmware, the PSP has always been capable of playing downloaded games, as well as music and movies. The problem though, is that games were rather large, and the largest memory cards that people got were often the pack in 32meg cards. Things have changed. for 20 bucks I can get a 3rd party licensed 4 Gig memory card. Now DLC makes sense to Sony as a publisher, developer and distributor. Doesn't make complete sense to consumers, as some don't have access to broadband that can handle downloading game content. but to those who have the means and the ways to do it, then yes, it makes sense.
