Sony PSP causes a fire in boy's pants photo

The Sony PlayStation Portable is a hot little game system, but in one gamer's case, it got so hot it almost burnt his business!

A Warner Middle School student was in band, probably doing band things, while his PSP was stowed away in his pants pocket. Later, around 8:30 am, Farmington Hills firefighters were called to the school, as this seventh grader's pants caught fire. Embarassing!

They treated the unnamed boy's leg burns at the school, and then he was transfered to a hospital for further treatment. It's a bit difficult to imagine a pants explosion, but a school district spokesperson said that his injuries were severe.

While officials are still investigating the cause, it seems that the PSP battery overheated and exploded. If I had to guess, I'd say that our band buddy was using a third-party battery replacement instead of Sony's battery.

Wow. I feel for this guy. How is a band geek ever going to live this down? I imagine "liar, liar" jokes and "hot crotch" or "fire bush" nicknames circulating already. What's worse is that the school was put on lockdown for emergency crews to enter and exit the building. Everyone in school must have heard about this -- nevermind the millions of Destructoid readers reading this now.

Sorry, kid. You're not going to want to see the pictures and responses from our readers.

I bet the school will start using this incident as a deterrent to would-be handheld gamer students. I mean, really, why wouldn’t you turn the damn thing off if you weren’t using it?

BrOnXbOmBr21: I'd guess he was using the PSP's awesome standby feature to kinda do a "quicksave"
I do it all the time

Wouldn't you notice your leg getting hot, you know, before your pants exploded into flames?

He could totally play this off like his penis was on fire, and then ALL the ladies would want him.

Instead he told people the truth...::sigh::

Even on standby my PSP has never gotten hot to the touch, and I've left it on standby for DAYS. I wonder what the hell this guy was doing.

@ Syn

I've heard a few other stories of battery explosions from cheap knock off pandora batterys bought on ebay. This was probably the case as the PSP with the battery it comes with stays cooler to the touch than my hand.

Unless he cracked it open and played with the wiring or something and messed up a connection. Either way it was probably the result of him doing something he shouldn't have been.

@PetiePal Oh yeah, because every gal wants a guy that gives them a burning bush. Hence the lines of women waiting for guys outside the STD clinics.

Turns out the battery in the PSP was the real battery and NOT a 3rd party one. They confirmed that. And the thing was turned off!! So it actually just looks like it's another Sony fuck-up and the little boy did nothing wrong! damn..he's about to get paid.

he could have dropped his PSP sometime and screwed up some wiring, may not have been a 3rd party battery although that is the most likely scenario as to why his psp decided to catch on fire

On a related note, did anyone else first see that image and think that that pair of underwear was crapped into instead of burnt? I mean, I know it's supposed to look charred at the bottom, but to me, it looks a lot like feces.

Also, I feel bad for that kid and for the aftermath of this. I'm sure some media outlet will use this incident to further fuel the fire of the upcoming media crusade against all video games. I would almost put money on it.

If what FUMF123 says is true that'd be the 2nd (AFAIK) sony product to explode. That's bad for Sony but it likely has more to do with how safe Li-ion batteries are more than PSP's.

On the other hand all electronic that use those batteries are supposed to have safety devices in them to prevent igniting (and exploding) the batteries.

Another exploding Sony battery? Damn. This one didn't happen in a laptop either. It's bad enough when it happens in your lap. But in your goddamn pants? Holy shit, that would freak you out. I bet Nintendo sends the kid a DS as a get well gift.

I hate news stories that keep names undisclosed. What's so bad about a little publicity? If you really don't want everyone to take your name down, don't be involved in these things.
