Sony: PS3 will significantly outpace PS2 photo

Let it not be said that Sony isn't ambitious. Despite the fact that the PlayStation 2 is still one of the most popular consoles of our time, SCEE's Andrew House believes that the PlayStation 3 will surpass it, aided in its quest by boosted functionality and online capabilities.

"If you look at the PS2, still in some markets going very strong, especially in North America in its tenth year on the market, we still can't predict where that lifecycle will end," he explains to Edge magazine. "I have a theory that with successive generations, and with more value added and built into the console in terms of experience -- and let's not forget that the PS2 really didn't offer a tremendously robust network experience -- that what you effectively do is potentially lengthen that lifecycle more and more as you get to the next iteration."

House believes that the PS3 will "significantly outpace" the PS2 before this generation is done.

The PS3 certainly hasn't had as glorious a career as the PS2 so far, but as prices go down and functionality goes up, do you think the Black Box o' Blu-ray has what it takes to take down its ancestor? All I know is, the PS2 still gets plenty of play here and nothing this generation so far has really topped what it offers.

Don't worry Jim, i'm not here to tell you that you hate Sony or any of that noise I just came to mention that the PS3 does have what is required to do so but Sony will have to make some serious rebounds if they hope to outshine the ancestor console. Personally I don't understand what's lead the people at Sony to making the poor choices they have in regards to the console, its capabilities and its software.

If they want it to outsell the PS2 so badly, I firmly believe they should put the backwards compatibility back in. I also feel obligated to mention that the functionality has actually decreased in the playstation.

At this point, Sony should just try to keep the Playstation alive - after mucking up the Playstation 3 as badly as they have, there is a very real possibility that there will not be a Playstation 4. I see no advantage to increased graphical fidelity, and Sony's marketting plan of touting the playstation's many superfluous features at douple the price and quadruple the production costs of Nintendo products would absolutely obliterate an $800 Playstation 4 that costs a thousand dollars to make.

Well yes, the PS2 lasted that along because of your lack of backwards compatibility. Way to go Sony.

Make it cheap, make it first, give it a lot of games and a useful function. What the fuck don't you understand about that Sony? Don't let the PS3 have a long lifespan (although now you sort of have to, considering you put your foot in your mouth so many times, as Jim has so effectively expressed). If you fuck up too badly, it won't matter how great your next system is. People won't buy it because they will be scared it will fail (see Dreamcast). Nobody's going to want your PS3 after the next XBox launches, so you can forget about that pipe dream. You're just not in the same situation you were in with the PS2.

Does he mean that, eventually, it will sell more on a monthly basis than the PS2?

If they spend less time talking about how great it will be and actually get around to making incredible games that rival my PS2 library, coupled with reinstating backwards compatibility and making [i]every[/] PS1 and PS2 game available for download on the PSN network, then I will truly believe that the PS3 will outdo the PS2.

The PS2 has one of the strongest libraries of games out of any console ever made, next to Super Nintendo. There's just an awful lot of real, quality titles. The PS3 doesn't have that yet. There's still potential and a lot of life left in the system, but I doubt it'll surpass the glory days of PS2. Especially when you consider the direction developers will move in with the release of the Sony Wiimote.

I'm not saying the PS3 doesn't have quality titles. I'm saying it doesn't have HALF as many as the PS2 does. The only current-gen console that can even compare is a handheld, the DS, in my opinion.

The sad thing is that backwards compatibility would be completely unnecessary if not for the fact that this generation of PS3 games is completely underwhelming. The only reason I think it's so important is that Sony has failed to deliver enough exclusives that are up to snuff - GTA IV wasn't as good as Vice City or San Andread, Kingdom Hearts doesn't have a sequel yet, Final Fantasy isn't out yet, and we're still waiting on God of War III. If they want to sell their system so bad, they need games worth playing, and exclusivity helps a lot.

You would wonder why the PS3 isn't selling as well as it should BECAUSE it can't play PS2 games.

@Hcapt But GTA isn't really exclusive to the PS3 is it?

Nitpicking aside, I remember doing a little exclusivity comparison between the PS3 and the 360 a few months back. The lack of exclusives on both platforms is pretty sad I'd say. Right now, I'd opt for the PS3 for 2 reasons...no RROD and Demon's Souls.

@Los255, Yes, because the PS2 is still popular because of the PS1 support.

I think the PS3 will because it really has become more of a 'media center' for a lot of people. I wish it had PS2 games but think X years in the future when gamestop doesn't bother carrying PS2 games anymore and a PS3 is 100$ because the PS4 is out.

I don't think games is the issue now. I believe the bloggers and media make it seem that way. the true problem is it is too much system for the average joe that does not have an HD tv or the internet. to them the ps2 and wii fit their lifestyle. example would be my kids love spongebob but spongebob online is just stupid.

You have to respect these spokespeople from Sony. It's not easy to live in a dream world that completely blocks out any sense of the reality around you, but they seem able to accomplish that task on a daily basis.

Will PS3 eventually outsell the PS2? Highly unlikely, no matter how long they extend the lifecycle. Will it outpace the PS2? Holy crap, no! It's so far behind now that catching up would be miraculous... as in literally requiring a act-of-God miracle.

The good news is that there is lots of room for it to be an awesome and successful console regardless of how it compares to PS2.

Ps3 will never beat 360. Microsoft has ultimately ruined the gaming world by creating mega trolls. These monsters buy every single microsoft game (some are awesome) and defend the horrible ones (too human). They also talk down about some of the greatest games this gen like uncharted, little big planet and soon to be GOW3 (I'm obviously not listing 360 ones like dead rising). They also say they won't play certain series because it's not high def (no more heroes). What's worse is they defend paying for live by saying psn is the laggiest thing they've ever played even though it's pretty much the same. It's such a sad time to be a gamer.

I think milo128 is a bit biased if he thinks MS is the only company with Turbo Retarded fanboys.

Every single bit of MS bashing in milo's post could apply to Sony fanboys as well if you switched the games around.

Well, think about it this way.
When the PS2 first came out, it was not only the first Next-gen system out at the time, it was also was a DVD player, which was also new. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm sure Blu-Ray will have it's time, but for now it isn't exactly stomping DVDs like DVDs did to VHS tapes. Not to mention it wasn't a freaking recession.
So, you were getting the best game system (complete with 100% backwards compatibility), a DVD player, all for a reasonably low price. Now, I know the PS3 has more features, but Blu-Ray hasn't caught on yet (especially with digital distribution stepping up). The PS2 was a deal and a half.
Add that to HUGE game support from the beginning (Square, who was the HUGE name at the time, as well as tons of japanese developers), followed with tons and tons of games made the PS2 a success. It still is a success.
The PS3 has great games, and it is certainly (finally) getting its powerful push with tons of quality games, it just doesn't have the QUANTITY that the PS2 did. In that regard, I'd say the Xbox 360 is the new PS2.
What I'm trying to say is I think PS3 sales will improve dramatically, especially with all the new announcements, but it isn't going to touch the PS2. The entire philosophy behind the PS3 is different then the PS2.
So...there you go.

I just like the fact that I can get game related content (movies and demo's) without going out and spending $5-$10 on those Jampacked CD/DVD's.

Ahh the world of downloading things from your living room kicks ass.

I'm so glad I got my PS3 with BC. Because as pretty much everyone agrees, the PS2 was one of the best consoles ever with an extremely robust library. The fact that I can play them on my PS3 is awesome, but removing that feature was a mistake.

However, the PS3 does have free online capabilities with the built in wireless functionality. Xbox doesn't have that. If Sony would finally get around to capitalizing on that fact then they definitely could become more successful. They need to focus on getting more quality games out there to the consumer rather than just repeating over and over how awesome blu-ray movies are. I haven't bought or watched 1 blu-ray movie on my PS3 in the almost three years I've had it.

everyone realizes that wonderful ps2 library didnt happen overnight it took about 6 years for it to get to that point( the point where the library was pretty much undisputed), the ps3 isnt even 3 years old ( November) and it has more hits at this point in its life than the ps2 had in its 1 st 3 years. its also been reported on multiple occasions that blu that blu rays adoption is happening at a sppeed dvd wished it was adopted at, hell toshiba just caved in and started putting blu ray drives in everything ( even laptops ), when the makers of your former competition completely cave in, theres simply no doubting its success at this point, blu ray is the new standard now and saying it will be in near everyones homes within 2 years or so wouldn't be an understatement.

with building blocks like these to go on, achieving that kind of success isnt impossible, hell it wouldn't even be that hard considering the majority off the world just goes with the flow.

Sony, I love your products, yet sometimes you say the dumbest things that make me wonder how you made them in the first place. Here's the breakdown:

NOT WITH THE 360 AND THE WII AROUND!

In my opinion, the PS2 had very little competition, especially two to three years into the "console war" with Nintendo and Microsoft. Not to say the Gamecube or the Xbox(original) weren't great machines in their own right. But the PS2 just had so much more going on for it at the time. Nowadays, each console provides something of value that the other lacks, leveling the playing field. I'm not saying its impossible for them reach such a comparable level, it just seems less likely, especially now that we already have a good feeling of what direction the consoles are heading in. A lot of factors can help them, such as a steady increase of exclusives, better features for lower prices, blu-ray becomes even more profitable, and they included backwards compatibility with PS2 games. Also, if the next generation of games come much later on than we predict, giving them enough time to expand to desired levels.

i'm not convinced that backwards compatability is as big an issue as people seem to think. i do not believe the vast majority of the potential market is actually bothered about it, and in any case most of us have a PS2. Think about it...how often do you go back and play games from 5-10 years ago? Occasionally, maybe once a month or so. but certainly not enough to justify adding cost onto an already-expensive console. anyways, i will always prefer hooking up an old console to play a game than anything else.

I think Sony's bullishness is somewhat justified. The PS2 sold the majority of its consoles as a result of its price cut (i think only 20% of the console's overall sales came prior to this) and most of its best games came out after this time also, once the install base was up.

Their main issue will be competition from Microsoft and Nintendo. As Sony and Nintendo can co-exist by targetting different markets, i think the console battle will be decided by geography. XBox will take the prize in the states whereas Sony will triumph in Europe and Japan. Unfortunately this result means that no one truly wins and twat-faced fanboy scumbags will ruin the world with their juvinile, vitriolic, jizz-soaked outbursts.

We aim for the stars to hit the tops of mountains, right? If they actually take steps to try and ensure the platform does as well as they want it to rather than simply expecting it will (which has been Sony's problem so far!), while it may never quite get there, their console will have had a respectable run by the end of the generation. It's just that that's not what they're doing.
