Sony: PS3 Wiimote will rule them all photo

Nintendo may have cornered the market, and Microsoft may be doing something that at least tries to look different, but Sony believes that its Wiimote knock-off will be the one big cock to rule the motion control roost. Sony's John Koller has made a massive claim, stating that neither the Wii nor Project Natal will be able to contend with the Sony Wiimote.

"When we provide further details, people will see exactly where we're going, not only from a technological standpoint on the hardware, but also where the gameplay is transitioning," claims Koller. "It's going to be a really exciting launch.

"Quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going have trouble matching, from a differentiation aspect."

Koller reckons that the PS3's area of expertise will be family games, sports games and shooters. Basically the things that the Wii and Xbox 360 currently excel at. So yeah, the PS3's Wiimote is going to destroy the competition and put Sony back on top of the mountain. It's guaranteed, because Sony said it!

Seeing as it's the only motion controller on the market that doubles as a dildo, I think they may actually have a point.

Sony's motion controler is a tested formula(with Wii) so it will be accurate.Natal on the other hand is not...i see a lot of glitches and bugs along the way.
And before anyone starts shooting "Ps3 Wiimote"e.t.c do your homework.Sony had this whole motion controler idea way before Nintendo they just paused it and Nintendo "stole" in a way their idea and made it work before Sony

the lady in the header pic has nice breasts; if the sony motion control is anything like her it will succeed. because who can argue thats it hasnt been done before and is better to look at in hd.plus its grabable.

Yeah, that's kinda like Nintendo 64, Playstation against no XBOX
Then, the new thing comes (Project Natal), in those times, the XBOX. And Nintendo comes with Gamecube (In that case, Wii Motion Plus). And then, Sony came with Playstation 2, that was a stroundous success. So, they actually do have a point. They're not trying anything new. And they're not just innovating. They're repeating what already happened. But better. Yeah, I bet on Sony.

It could be dumb (I'd even say there's a decent chance), but having 1:1 motion control could be awesome and may make it stand out. That and the fact the uniqueness of the wii is shot. Once companies start porting games it will become a wii that plays hi def game and has a blu-ray drive for only $150 more. (I'm including the new remote).

It's all about the games. If there's some great games coming alongside the motion controller, then it might succeed. Otherwise, nobody really cares how it performs as a device, or the technology behind it.

We'll see if it happens or not. Personally I prefer pressing a button and getting definite feedback over doing a motion and having a chance of getting feedback.

Too Funny! Sony doesn't get it at all. Sega was way better with the Master System and yet the inferior NES blew it away.
Sony will not beat the Wii in sales, ever! I have a PS3, play it all the time, my Wii gathers dust next to it.
Why you ask? Because Nintendo has become the mindset that anyone can play it.
The PS3 vdoes it all better in every way but granoddma and grandpa will pick up a wiimote and waggle it and have some fun with the grandkids. BOOM! that's it! End of story.
No matter how good the PS3mote is it's not going to outsell the big N.
Hardcore gamers need the control offered by dual sticks and a button layout they've used for a decade. PS3 and 360 controls are very similar.
I'm sure we'll have these Motion control PS3motes in our house as my wife loves rail shooters. But for real games....... Nah!

Yeah Sony because your track-record is so good with motion controls thus far. The SiXaXiS was so revolutionary! If they failed with the one that comes standard with every single system, than how do they think that people are going to just flock to this new thing? Where you need a PSEye to go with it and lets face it, there not flying off the shelves either.

Complement Sandwich:

Nice: A great part about the Sony Wiimote is that it will be able to work get 3rd party wii titles unlike Project Natal, which probably will have to have all exclusive games.

Mean: Sony is full of shit and just copying Nintendo.

Nice: It looks like their motion controller is more sensitive than Nintendo's, which is a good thing! That means the player will hopefully be more precise.

I actually think it may be possible for Sony to port some third-party Natal games for use with the PSEye, though I could be completely wrong about that.

Gee, a Sony exec says the Sony product will be better. I'm sure there's an MS guy who says the same about Natal, and a Nintendo guy who'll keep saying the same thing about the Wii.

It doesn't mean anything, and reporting on it only encourages more meaningless comments from these execs.

Wii = motion controllers for grandma and the kids. Massive new market, win all the way to the bank.

Natal = motion control for grandma and the kids, but without the "first" bonus Wii had. I very much doubt the MILLIONS of people who bouth a Wii and are now bored of it (see console sales vs software sales) will go out an buy a 360 and Natal.

Gem (or whatever it ends up being called) = motion controls for GAMERS. Nothing more than another arrow in the PS3's quiver.

Those stories about ''grandmas and grandpas play Wii with their grandkids'' is all bullshit. Yeah, I never saw any grandparents playing Wii with ther grandchildren. And even if they do, the grandchild wouldn't have fun, since he would probably beat their grandparents easy (unless their grandparents were, or still are, I don't know... like... hardcore gamers). The Wii is for casual players and curious kids, not old people to play with their grandkids.

I think it's odd that No More Heroes HD won't be Sony Wiimote compatible. It's hard to image it without motion controls. Also, so many people posting here are in denial. Technology aside, when some off the first games coming out for are "Motion Party" and "Sing and Draw", I feel comfortable making an educated as to what kind of games will end up on it. That and the fact that the biggest game coming up to support it is everybody’s “favorite” Resident Evil game, numero 5. That probably makes me a hypocrite since many of the games available at the Wii’s launch were crappy licensed games. However, based on precedent, I’d say Sony should have held out until the PS4. It will almost certainly be a financial failure due to a lack of support, a lack of worthwhile games, a lack of interest, a lack of a large install base on the PS3, and a lack of new owners generated by it… need I say more? Needless to say, I won’t be buying Sony’s Wiimote when I get a PS3. I wish Sony would actually do more productive things with their time i.e. improve PlayStation Network, better moderate online game play in their games, make Home not be worthless, not copy other people’s ideas, ect.

HA HA HA! yeah guys sony really is an industry leader. i mean they've shown that they were in fact the first company to incorporate motion controls. oh, and they're definitely not STILL ripping off the snes controller. give me a break, sony has always been about one thing, marketing. that's all their platform has EVER been based on, and that's not going to change.

that being said, man is it tempting to go out and buy one. not for the sony wiimote, but for all the great games it got this year. as for this new motion controller, it's just going to bring the loads and loads of shovelware to a different system. face it, nintendo won this gen, period.

LOL don't be so delusional. First off one the launch games for Sony "Fairy Wand" is called Motion Party, for god sakes. Yeah that sound like a real motion controller for GAMERS right there, now doesn't it? If you think developers are going to only make "hardcore gamer" games for this thing, than keep on dreaming. Because this whole moving to motion controls from Microsoft, and Sony is to tap into the casual market that Nintendo owns right now. So it's not to keep pleasing the hardcore market that they already have. What purpose would that serve them?

Man, can't they just call the whole motion control arms race off? Sony's finally making some decent progress in their uphill battle with the PS3, and I'd hate to see them blow it on a Me Too gamble like this. Don't get me wrong, if they're right, that'd be great too. Not every ridiculous-sounding idea is doomed to bump elbows with the e-Reader.

Actually, I'd be inclined to agree with them, seeing as how the PS3 controller can do everything the Wii remote can, but with better accuracy. But Nintendo had this going from the start, with a console built around this idea -- Sony won't be able to take what Nintendo has. I'm still buying it, though.

Both of these new motioncontrollers will fail if you'd ask me and there are 2 very simple reasons for that:

1) The Nintendo brand stands for fun and quality to the casual audience (and the hardcore audience that is not part of the ignorant dipshits), while this audience deems the ps3 and xbox360 for young whippersnappers.

2) Nintendo had the best frickin launch game ever packaged with the console.
You just cannot beat the pick-up and play easiness of wii sports.
It is the easiest game ever to get into due to the controls without any difficulties for a complete noob to videogames, the friendly interface graphics and sounds and just the sheer fun that can be had with the game by anyone.

It may not be an artistic masterpiece such as shadow of the collosus, but from a designer and consumer perspective, this game is (according to me) the best game of all time (of all time!)

Being that I have the 360, the PS3 and the Wii. Adding in the fact that I play them in that order. I think I'll pass on this PS3 Wiimote.

@ Chocalate - how the hell is this going to be "motion control for GAMERS" when it's virtually the same friggin thing as the Wiimote, but with less functionality. Seriously man, how delusional are you?

@ Noctis - Nintendo took it's first dive in motion controls back on the NES then brought it back out ever so often. They finally got it right with the Wii. Once Sony realized that motion control could be profitable they dropped the dual shock and developed the sixaxis.

Sony's Sexaxis is the only one that is likely to solve case A and case B of motion control gameplay.

Case A: actual gameplay applications that are fun
Case B: works accurately and consistently

The Wii does as much of A as we've ever seen from motion controls (take that for as much as you think it's worth) and occasionally does a little bit of B. But mostly it's too low fidelity and lacks absolute positioning capabilities.

Natal seems like it will do case B pretty well, but it utterly fails at case A. The EyeToy has already done what Natal is trying to do and it was an absolute failure outside of the "gimmick" of the thing, not because it was too low fidelity but because flailing your arms about to play a video game isn't that fun.

Doesn't matter who did motion control first. Adopt, adapt & improve. That's what drives gaming forward. If no one else did analogue sticks because the N64 did it first (step forward all pedants if I'm wrong there), then gaming would suck.

That said, I can't see any game where motion control is worth a damn. Most Wii games come across as gimmicky, and yes, great for casual gamers etc etc. Most of us aren't casual gamers.

Of course, if Lucasarts gives us our 1:1 lightsaber game....
