Sony: PS3 was too radical for us to think about videogames photo

Sony UK's very own Ray Maguire has been espousing the virtues of the Black Box o' Blu-ray once again, this time claiming the the PS3's functionality was so "radical" that Sony simply couldn't devote its time to making videogames. It's simply that easy to forget that your games console is for games, apparently.

"When we first started - because all the functionality was radical - we talked about that functionality," Maguire explains. "And in doing that, maybe we weren’t strong enough on the games side of it. Now, with the strength of the games we’ve got coming out, this Christmas we’re definitely about the games. From our own first party, and also third party, there’s a feast of games for PS3 this year."

Grab a fork, boys, it's feasting time! Far be it from Sony, however, to forget that there's still all that radical functionality. Maguire asserts that people are only now beginning to "understand" features like PlayTV and the relationship between the PS3 and PSP. It's radical!

The PS3 is, without a doubt, an amazing piece of technology, but Sony needs to not repeat its mistakes by forgetting that gamers care primarily, and sometimes exclusively, about videogames. The PSP was also marketed as a multi-functional device, but it feel flat on its face when it went up against the comparitively low-tech, but infinitely software-richer, DS. Extra functionality is great, but it should never, ever come at the expense of the games. Hopefully Sony has learned this now.

It's way too radical to waste time with the simple things, like playing in-game music, having a competent achievement system, and lets not forget, having games that perform at the same level as the competition.

:!NEWSFLASH!: Sony still trying to do what NintenDID.

(I'll be fair, though, I just gots my PSTriples this weekend and I'm having a ton of fun with LBP and Assassin's Creed... But right now I feel that apart from teh blu-rayz it's "other than games" functionality falls flat compared to Wii Weather, News, PSN isn't as robust as Wii Shop (yet) although it does have some really interesting things on offer...and the Playstation offerings (I still call it Virtual Console) make pandas sad...Folding@Home is pretty nifty, though.)

Who needs Blast Processing when you've got radical functionality?

I don't know why Jim keeps saying that Sony isn't coming out with any games these days, because there are a tonne of new holiday games. Many of them are out on the 360 as well.

Sony execs stay saying some stupid shit, LOL. Well, one thing I CAN say about the PS3 is that at least the thing is not apparently made to melt the fuck down every 6 months, like SOME systems.

Why can't Sony just come and say; "we fucked the launch in da ass, but now we've got our shizzle together"? I'm happy as pigs in shit over my PS3, and five years from now I'll still be playing on it, and playing blu-rays as well.

Where have you been the past year? New 360's don't have the "Red Ring" issue anymore. Since Oct 07. Does the PS3 have any games out yet? Yes? Oh, well I guess people should shut up about that too.

Uh, that's news to me. The last thing I heard was that Microsoft was actually being sued over that issue, and that was on October 17th of this year. Microsoft's claimed the new hardware would fix the RROD issue in the past, but nothing happened, so I'll believe that it's fixed now when I see it.

As for the actual story, Sony needs to shut the hell up already. I love my PS3, but it was garbage when it first came out. They just need to admit that.

It was terrible at first, but now I really dig my PS3. But you can't really blame them. Companies always soften the blow of their mistakes. Like Wii with the fact that they have no storage and their "refrigerator" reference, and microsoft always making excuses about the fact that their system has a radioactive hamster inside that may or may not have a massive heart attack and die at any moment.

They aren't going to come out point blank, they have to use that corporate poetry. Everyone does it.

Once, a couple of friends of mine and I went fishing at a lake a while ago. Long story short, I stabbed a man in the chest to keep him from sneezing at my sandwiches. Now I want a PS3 and a 360. And a DS too.

It's funny. If Sony was the biggest most popular selling console right now. No one at Sony would be saying this. They'd all be patting themselves on the back.

Sony sure love them some bullshit. This is one of those situations where embarrassment THEY should feel is instead received by those reading/listening to their inane nonsense.

HAHAHA SONY, best be joking niger. A video game console should be for gaming and anything else within the sphere of gaming, a video game console should NOT be a swiss army knife. Are you that poor that you can't afford a stand alone blu-ray player? I actually bought a ps3 to watch movie, i don't play any ps3 games. In fact I thought the ps3 was ONLY a blu-ray player, it wasn't until a year after I purchased a ps3 that a friend of mine asked if I had any ps3 games which puzzled me until he layed it down on me on what ps3 is. Funny no? Srsly though, a Wii is more radical than a ps3.
