Sony says that they're selling PlayStation 3 systems three times as fast. Try saying that three times fast!
Sony Chief Executive Sir Howard Stringer says that PS3 sales have picked up since the launch of the cheaper 40GB model. He points out that over the past three weeks the console is now selling three times as fast in the UK, and twice as fast in the US. Stringer feels that if this trend continues, they can regain some of their former glory.
"Sony will certainly hit its target of selling 10 million PS3s worldwide by the end of its fiscal year, says Stringer. "We are coming back up again."
The Sony Cheif also commented on the missed opportunity to unite the HD DVD and Blu-ray video disc formats. "There was a chance to integrate. I wish I could go back in time, because I heard it was all about saving face."
Finally, Stringer weighs in on the Paramount/HD DVD deal: "We were trying to win on the merits, which we were doing for a while, until Paramount changed sides," he said.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I hope the sleeping giant is awakening!
why?
Toshiba's HD 1 terabyte holo disks are gonna ruin everyone's party in a few years. Theres also DVD upscaling players for less then $75, Id much rather have one of those as I already have a sizable DVD collection...
THEN I'll forgive them for being so damn pretentious.
As brainderailment said there are titles for the ps3 you just have to want them, if you don't that's fine. The system is finally picking up steam and as much as the fanboys will defend their console, all of them doing well benefits the industry as a whole not just your dreams of acceptance for your console of choice.
Haha!
Forgive me, I'm drunk after securing my replacement 360 and COD4.
They've been promising holographic storage mediums for close to a decade. I'll believe it when I see a working one on a store shelf I can buy for under $1,000.
@brad
You're acting like Sony's forced some control over people. They never said they were and they aren't. If you're referring to porn, you're wrong. I've got one in my hand right here. BluRay porn. From Japan. It's very real and very much full of porn. The porn thing is a non-issue. They're gonna get made and Sony wasn't the one stopping anyone.
Or if you're referring to it being strapped into the PS3, well, MS has already shown issues with picking DVD-9 for it's format. I think SOME middle ground had to be levvied in their regard to needing more space. I do think 25/50GB is more than anyone's going to need for a game, but it's nice for a movie.
As for "failed" formats, you're only speaking in a consumer perspective. Minidisc and Beta are STILL in heavy use today professionally. Although everyone agrees that UMD is and always shall be a joke.
@mrfreezy
Porn will NOT decide this format. It won't. Why? When was the last time you bought porn on a DVD? Or paid for a magazine?
If you have in the last 2-3 years you're less than a quarter of the total audience viewing porn online. I bought the BluRay I have out of simple curiosity given that it's something that a lot of people said would never happen, yet did. It's the first porn I've paid for in... 4 years? Yeah, about that. So, to sum up, Sony's doing fine.
I think Disney may actually hand this format over to Sony if Fox and Sony themselves don't do it for them. I'd bet good money the top selling HD movies this year are going to be (in no order)
The Simpsons Movie
Spiderman 3
Transformers
Shrek 3
Pirates of the Carribean 3
Bourne Ultimatum
Ratatoullie
Die Hard 4
Of which only 3 are on HD DVD and the rest Blu Ray. If you factor in new title sales, BluRay's gonna smack them hard.
I've not read that statement in its original context, or indeed while I'm sober, but that makes me laugh all over the place.
'Yeah, we were doing OK, until some dudes that were really important decided the other guys were better'.
As for the merits or demerits of either format as far as I can tell (that is, by watching the things) they are both EXACTLY THE FUCKING SAME. They had a chance to integrate the formats and your damn skippy they should have because nobody is winning this 'war' anytime soon and all anybody is going to get is consumer apathy at your corporate idiocy. I'm not sure exactly what incident he is referring to but Stringers comment about 'saving face' sounds like nothing more than snide. Which is exactly what Sony do not need at this time particularly given the humility of the "We are coming back up again" statement. Because thats where Somy are right now, at the bottom, and they are going to have to get back up on merit, not by right.
I do not regret my purchase so far. I love having all of the systems. Now I can stfuajpeg, completely apathetic to the fanboy chorus. It's a good feeling.
Maybe he should add a year... that's exactly what he said the last time around, if I'm not mistaken?
