Sony's still basking in the good press earned over its $299 price cut. Nevertheless, the platform holder wants to silence the wagging tongues of cynicism, stressing that the price cut did not come about as a reaction to slow PS3 sales.
"We are aware that consumers are watching their euros and pounds more carefully than before and it may make a price reduction have potentially even more impact," says SCEE president Andrew House. "But it would not be fair to say this is a reaction to current market conditions."
House also had nice things to say about the PlayStation Network, and how it factors into Sony's mythical ten-year plan: "The goal is to move from a traditional short, toy-based life cycle to a longer, consumer electronics life cycle. The network allows us to give customers a better sense of value and continuous improvement."
What do you think the motivation was behind the price cut? Slow sales, the constant pressure from publishers, or something else entirely? Play the role of an analyst and take a wild guess.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
9 months of anticipating price cuts couldn't have helped the PS3's sales either.
There's on one system that hasn't seen a price cut yet, Sony, and it happens to be the box that waggle built, for better or worse.
I'm not sure why you'd encourage them to be dishonest. Particularly in this case though, if a company told me "hey we figured you could use the help so we just straight up are charging less now, no other reason", I'd wonder how they justified their previous price. When they say "well it costs us less to make this now, so the savings are passed on to you" no one gets angry and the effect on our wallets is the same.
because they taste good and Jim's from the South now, which is Crawfishland.
Oh the reason we're releasing this cheaper system is because the PS3 was not selling well.
Hahaha!
THAT WAS THEIR PLAN ALL ALONG!
The Japanese way is to look way forward, plan accordingly and execute your plan. Sure it's not what us Westerners are used to, we see our companie using every available opportunity to grab sales and change up our strategies on a monthly / weekly basis. The Japanese don't, they make a well thought out plan, and stick to it.
And sure, that's probably in combination with lower build costs, but the price dropped nearly 40%, which I don't think can be made up entirely by lower build costs.
Say what you will about a "Japanese Plan" or any other comment that may reek of rampant fanboyism - it only goes to further prove the long-standing assumption that Sony is content with acting like a prep school douchebag that realized that a vast majority of the people he wanted to come to his party lacked the sheer tonnage of coin it takes to even get through the fucking door.
To their credit, it doesn't cost much once you get through the door, but to talk like you're doing the world a favor LONG after you should have done the world a favor sounds pretentious as hell.
Which, as history has shown, is par for Sony's course.
