Sony: PS3 price cut for U.S. only

Sony: PS3 price cut for U.S. only photo
     Industry Bullshit
It seems like only gamers in the United States will benefit from Sony's recent price drop to $499 for the 60gb model of the PlayStation 3. My apologies to our worldwide readers. While Sony may not love you, we still do. Feel free to throw out the obligatory 'we didn't want one anyway' posts.

Bloomberg reports that although the U.S. saw a 17 percent price cut for the PS3, Sony has no plans to discount in the console in Asia or Europe. The company says that there are no plans "at this point" and follows up with a 'no comment' about the future.

"Sony is having a tough time with its PlayStation,'' said Shigemi Nonaka, chairman at Polestar Investment Management Co. in Tokyo, which has $218 million in assets including Sony shares. "Sony's always had this image of being at the leading edge of technology, but they've fallen behind the Wii.''

If you think about yesterday's report about Sony's game division still losing money while the rest of the company is making money, it kind of makes sense that they would only want to cut prices in one market. It is understandable that they would want to do this to spark sales in this large of a market, but there's no denying that other countries will feel cheated.

Never give up hope, though. Not too long ago Sony said that they had 'no plans' to reduce the price of the PS3, and then a price drop was announced early July.

What does PS3 cost in Canada? Is it still $100 more than the USA?

The Canadian dollar is just as strong as the US dollar now, Canadians need a bigger than $100 price-drop.

Why the fuck should I buy one when elsewhere gets it cheaper? And no, neither Fall of Man nor Motorstorm is an answer.

This is why the gray market thrives, here in Bombay i can a PS3 for 500$. Buying an official unit costs double here.

Gotta love lax customs.

After all this price drop news, I feel that I am somehow being forced to buy a 60gb PS3 now while I can. With the emotion chip being phased out, my hand is forced to bite the bullet and get one.

Don't forget the Canada!

I think I heard somewhere that the Elite is going to drop by $50 in Canada because of the strength of our monies these days. I THINK I remember reading that somewhere at some point. Probably best to ignore me.

Mr Derp: wtf! I had the same with Guitar Hero 2. A mate kept saying how awesome it was for 6 months or so, then I dreamt about it and woke up wanting it.

True, but was that something Sony did or something retailers did on their own? I'm not sure, but I think the price was dropped before Sony had even made their announcement.

Of course they have plans for a price cut. All this faux speculation and denial is absurd. Sony aren't about to Osborne themselves by saying a price cut is imminent and kill sales of their consoles in the process.

@ Blazingluke

Yeah and you get 5 free blu-ray movies (Canada) if you purchase the PS3 (or any blu-ray player) between now and December I think. Costs the SAME as the Elite now plus 5 free movies...I cannot complain

A friend of mine (with supposed insider sources) tells me that they dropped the 60gb simply because they can't get the hard drives anymore.
He also claims the 80gb will be dropped to $499usd/$549cdn by Christmas.

Course, none of this will matter if MS drops the 360 by a hundred bucks as is currently rumoured to be happening.

I was looking to buy one last week.

£525 with Motorstorm and Resistance, which are the only games I would actually want anyway to date.

That's over $1000.

Obviously I asked the sales clerk if he'd care to suck my balls.

didn't it cost less in the states already, compared to the rest of the global market? if anything they should have looked at exchange rates and tried to level things out.

And I thought, yeah I'm in Canada so everyone who is saying "$150 price drop", that actually is a lot, but then someone else says "Canadian dollar is worth the same as American dollar" so, then I think why does the PS3 still cost $50 more up here? And... our dollar is still a bit less I think, but they are really close, just like the 1970s.

I hope to God that Sony keep their PSTriple at the staggering NZ$1200 it is currently for as long as possible, maybe that'll break their evil videogamr stranglehold on this country.

PS Fuck Sony

yep, it is $549 up here in the chilly north, making it the same price as the 360 Elite...

bringing it to that price point was an excellent move by Rhymes with Bony.

@donkey Kong

Costs money to import goods into Canada, same as Exporting...customs baby and we get hit with that when we purchase.

What a load of crock. Anyone else outside of the US should just boycott this overpriced paperweight until it gets lowered there too. This is ridiculous.
