Sony: PS3 disc-drive errors not our fault photo

You remember those glitches that were occurring for a few people when PS3 Firmware 3.0 was released? The ones that Sony tried to fix with Firmware 3.1? Well, according to Sony, it's no longer a problem with Firmware and if you're one of the unlucky ones who encountered issues, you may very well be up sh*t creek.

Following mounting complaints from frustrated users, Eurogamer asked Sony to comment on customer complaints detailing their inability to play a number of Blu-rays on the PS3. All Sony has said in response is that it's "not an issue with the Firmware." Those experiencing problems are being told by customer services to get their ailing machines repaired at a cost they will have to cover themselves if the system is out of warranty.

Sony will not say what the problem is, which is a little disconcerting. We'll have to wait and see if this becomes a bigger deal than it currently is.

The complete lack of customer service in many industries during this day and age completely fucking baffles me.

While they got their act together after the first week, people who called NCSoft official customer service line the first few days of Aion's launch got a fax machine.

Amazing!

Haven't tried playing my copy of uncharted since the firmware update in hopes it won't screw up. I wonder if I should avoid playing it at all until they fix it...oh wait, nevermind, ha, ha, heh, ehhh. Time to bite the bullet and see if my ailing old man 2007 PS3 can play Uncharted anymore.

No. I do not approve of this picture. It has no caption and is too relevant to the subject matter.

Very poor form.

This is why I hate Microsoft. They fuck up with their products and don't even admit their fault much less make an effort to fix it.

What? This isn't Microsoft? Hmm...I guess fuck ups are universal after all.

How is it not a firmware issue? People's PS3s work. You release firmware. People's PS3s now do not work. Please provide an even remotely plausible explanation for that, and I will be happy. In fact, I'll even allow the explanation to contain ghosts. And has anyone else noticed that Sony has now entered full blown douche mode again? Feels like it's been a while.

@PappaDukes: I've been laughing at your avatar all day.

BIAS!!! How dare you use Sony's own words in the correct context of the situation and form a perfectly valid opinion.

Nintendo has a similar problem earlier and is repairing the Wii's I think possibly probably not maybe perhaps or not so captain.

More news about Sony making dumb decisions.

This doesn't have any effect on Slims, does it? I want to purchase one soon, but if they're affected, I might hold off until this blows over.

Sony has told Eurogamer that a firmware update cannot affect the Blu-ray drive on a PS3.

what a joke!!!!!!!! so the ps3 as the ultimate ("stand alone blu-ray player"), with the feature to be updated from sony 1 or 2 twice a year was a lie)
and how come Uncharted 1 worked so well with FW3.00

if they make a new firmware to fix this issue then PLEASE! add an auto-eject feature just before installing ps3 firmware updates on the system (especially if there is a bios flash update for the blu-ray drive in the firmware) like in FW3.00/FW3.01 "uncharted would Froze/ not read disc (ring a bell??)" <-- if someone remember

this quote confirms my opinion i would say
"was on killzone 2 was going 2 play multi player on line when it said i needed 2 up date to firmware 3.00 downloaded and installed firmware when ps rebooted the blue ray drive had dissappeared o' the splash screen ps3 still boots but wont recognise any discs blue ray dvd or cd was working perfect before update 3.00 as i was playing killzone 2 since updated to 3.01 drive still missing can anyone help me many thanks in advance."

I'm very much scared at this point now. I want a PS3 Slim but now I'm worried about being 3.0ed. I'm just going to wait on it for a while until Sony can get its head out of its ass, man up and try to fix the problem faster. Microsoft fanboys are already smelling blood in the water. Don't give them a nibble.

@ maguszxz there nothing wrong with the slim it has the new blu-ray drive wiht hardware... its the old ones with old hardware that does not fit with the FW3.00 .. and it only happens if you update with a disc in your drive as its begin flash whit new drivers so it works as well as the slim

I was playing Uncharted last night. I think it was in chapter 19, where you run and shoot at those pursuing you, and the game did, in fact freeze. However, I restarted and didn't have another problem until I put the game away a while later. I am still not finished, so no guarantees I guess.

Also, I was able to eject the disc and play a DVD (which, admittedly is not a Bluray).

That's my experience, anyway.

there's a easy way to test this thing out if anyone out there still got a 60Gb ps3 whit Firmware 2.80 then put Kilzone2 in the drive and update to Firmware 3.00 and see how long the drive works...

You also have to remember that the Violet laser doesn't have a very long life span.

I wrote an article of a year ago about this...not like any cares.

Look at the problems OLED is having with "blue" life span. Same process to make laser diodes. This is why those people can still play regular DVD's and CD's. Because the Red and Infrared lasers are still in tact.

wait so im confused, is it uncharted or the 3.0 firmware which supposedly got fixed with 3.1? And if it is a firmware error, then um... cant users format their machine back to square 1 to really confirm that it was the firmware? I know this sucks but since sony is alienating their customers on this, best people use their brains and see where the problem really is at.

After I downloaded firmware 3.0 my system was inoperable to the point were I couldn't even do anything with it. Add into that the need for a reciet even if your in warranty is just plain ridiculious espcially since you can't even pay to extend it, and then the repair costs 150 which is god damn obscene.

This happened to me with firmware 2.0. Its really wasn't the firmware's fault its just that the blu-ray drive died and I didn't bother to play my PS3 until the firmware update. Which lead me to logically conclude it was the firmware update that killed my PS3.

When I sent it in they told me it was blu-ray laser had burnt out, luckily it was under warranty. In turned out my initial assumption was wrong.

This is in fact an example of the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon. Its synchronicity of two or more events that are causally unrelated occurring together in a meaningful manner; firmware update & death of the blu-ray laser- that I equated to being interrelated, but in reality wasn't.

Isn't this what MS did when E74 started hitting, then eventually added that to the three year warranty?

Industry dickey isn't as rare as we'd like.
