Gamers are more excited about the prospect of PS3 level games on the Vita so this is not wrong. Lets all have deeper and more satisfying mobile gaming from Sony!
Well, I hope they can fix the projected battery life, not overcharge for memory, or finally do online handheld gaming right for me to take that claim seriously. It'll have some good games, no doubt, but will it be a good handheld for even GREATER games?

This dedicated gamer would love a dedicated handheld gaming machine. Maybe Sony should try that out, I would love to pay less for a Vita that isn't trying to do anything but play my games.
I don't get why the Vita is hailed as the messiah of the dedicated gaming handhelds, when it is still trying to be more than that. I don't want a fucking mobile media hub, I want to play games.

Well, I think they may have their hopes a bit high, but hell, Sony is bringing ALOT with the PSV, if anything's got a shot and being big, it's the PSV.

In terms of purely addressing the video game market, the Vita certainly can have a shot.

I see, but I'm sure every gamer knows that Sony has been a dominating force now with the PS3 price cut and its AAA exclusives like Uncharted 3( I can't wait!!). But I don't want to offend people either because we are all gamers.

I don't know if they can do that....I don't know if innovation is enough. Maybe it is and all the new ideas will propel the vita, but i don't expect it.

Because the only people I have heard saying that are ether:
a) People who make games for smartphones, or
b) game journalists who believe them.
I don't think theres a universal sentiment that portable game systems are on the way out, and sales don't seem to support this idea ether.

PS Vita has a 3G model, has Playstation Suite and will (more than likely) have a format of digital distribution by which games (and software) will be free or under $5 USD so, there is some cross pollination of market strategies there.
One of the true break away parts for the PS Vita will be social sides. The association with social gaming has been reserved for Zynga and big FPS titles on XBL but, the PS Vita has the potential to turn around that perception of the market. The new Social apps (Near, Party, Messages, LiveArea, etc) all offer gamers interactive, social and, commerce based modules for people to take advantage of.
We shall see how it all goes. SCEA has to announced the launch date for the PS Vita before anything can be tested. Plus, I should keep things in check. I like to follow and comment on many things related to the PS Vita but, anytime there is perceived build up and fabrication related to the device, it takes away some surprise and magic when the proverbial truth hits and the PS Vita is actually in the palms of a consumer.

A demand for rich, deep handheld gaming? Oh, the arrogance never ends. That is a very small market and mostly only exist because Sony keeps saying it does. I guess it's similar to them stating there is a great demand for 3D gaming. Im sure it will be just as successful. I hope they intend to inform the masses about the hidden cost. And it's extremely low battery life and don't forget it's proprietary overpriced memory cards that could be mandatory for some games. I wonder if they will be bullet points on the box?

@OneRed: Hallelujah. I miss when the PS1 only played music CDs and the PS2 only played DVDs but they didn't shine the focus from the games. Now ever since the PS3, PSP and soon Vita, Sony lists the multimedia features before mentioning what games they can play!
I'm not a huge fan of handheld gaming in general, but I might pick up the Vita if it has some good games on release. The most I ever play on the go is a little bit of android games at work

Theres always room for a handheld as promising as the vita however i dont even see the 2 markets compete...
Enh.. I don't know so much about mobile gaming ursurping the handheld throne, I think they're more like parallel markets, mostly because the products they offer are pretty different. Games on my phone fulfill different needs than the ones my DS fill.
That's not to say it's not impossible, but according to current trends and technologies, it's not the case. Whether this will change in the future remains to be seen.

His idea is reasonable. I think the angle he's coming from is that after people get bored of the instant gratification flash games on mobiles, they'll seek out new, more rich experiences on other platforms to play.

The mobile gaming market is grossly overrated and quite troubled itself, it doesn't affect proper handhelds (with games that don't mostly amount to popcorn) especially when you consider it's basically Monster Hunter that kept the PSP selling.
That said, I think Sony have their work cut out for them to match Nintendo, nevermind wipe out a whole different market.

I have zero need for a cellphone in my life (I'm serious), so if there every comes a day when the only way I can get mobile games is on a phone (or an overpriced -in my opinion- and oversized -to be truly portable- Ipad/tablet) then I'll be pretty pissed.
Hence, I'll probably always buy things like a Vita or the 3DS. I just have much more need for a dedicating gaming handheld.
