No shit! Sometimes I'll boot up my PS3, and have to install a firmware update AND install the game I just bought, after I delete some other installed games to make space. It's pretty damn terrible.

I'm fine with how often they updates happen, it at least reminds me that Sony actually works on problems. The problem is the way the PS3/PSP firmware updates are set up right now, basically each firmware update essentially reinstalls most of the OS even if it hasnt changed much. Essentially its like Windows patches reinstalling most of Windows 7 every time they try to shove a new version of IE down your throat.
He also didn't say the updates will be quicker. My guess is it'll be happening in the background without you noticing, like some PC applications like Chrome do.
This Sucks!!! I was really looking forward to playing some new Firmware updates. As a matter of fact it's been a while since we had a new one on PS3.

I really don't mind the updates on my PS3. Maybe it's because PSN+ does most of it between 4am and 5am automatically for me.

I don't really see the firmware as a problem, but only because I have Playstation Plus. With PS+ you can set your console to auto-update itself, and your games at a certain time every day. I love this feature, but I also wish it was made available to everyone, not just those who bought into the program.
In general though, the PS3 takes FOREVER to update not only the system, but games as well. Why is it that a game update will take me 3 seconds on Xbox, but 3 minutes on PS3? I suppose that's the price of free online, but it does majorly cut into my game time.

I suspect Sony will move toward an actual patching system that only modifies files that need to be replaced, instead of a wholesale firmware replacement like they have now.

Ever since I signed up for Playstation Plus and they introduced that "automatic update" system, I've NEVER had to see through another firmware update since! It's funny, that reason alone is enough incentive for me to sign up for Playstation Plus again.

Yeah the constant updates get annoying as hell. I don't play my ps3 to often and it seems like every time I boot it up it has some firmware update that needs to be installed in order to play online and I think even update your games. I haven't installed the latest firmware update that came with the new shitty ToS agreement.
I don't see the updates as such a big deal, then again, I'm not an asshole who complains about every little thing. Updates don't take even remotely as long as people make out they do. Updates are a part of life. Stop pretending like companies are ass-raping you everytime they release an update.

-They were aware from PSP fans, the most wanted feature is second analog nub, and the address it on the vita with dual sticks not nubs. nor attachment.
-They were aware of developers complaining of PS3 devkits and how it's hard to develop for, and the address it with Vita with easy to develop for and more affordable devkits.
-They were aware of PS3 inability to perform multitasking and cross game chat, and they did address it on vita with Party chat.
-They were aware of people complaining about the browser experience in PS3 and PSP, and they did address it on vita with webkit based browser.
-They were aware of the problems with PS3 launch, price and small launch title, and they did address it on vita with reasonable price for starter and large selection of title at launch (26 title at japan launch).
- The only thing they missed is the battery life, which is more about bottleneck in technology for every device nowdays.

I don't even have a PS3 and I know how shitty those updates are (of which they did in fact have one a couple weeks ago), because my roomate does and I have to hear him bitch about it everytime he boots that damn thing up.

Firmware udates are overrated. They don't even happen that frequently. They're also usually announced in advance so you can just turn on the PS3, start the updating procedure and play some Xbox while it's updating or do something else for that time. Not that big of a deal to me.
You know, I sincerely have never been bothered by the firmware updates. I've always felt that there's a really easy solution to the problem. And no, I'm not talking about being a PS Plus subscriber, although that certainly is one way.

amtalx pretty much answered your question, I have no idea why Sony didn't go this route like Microsoft did for Xbox360.
Hopefully it will be a patching system on Vita , cause I don't think it will be download/installer process on the background like "Narishma" said. Cause even so, it will prevent you from launching a game on the process for security reasons.

I just had to update AGAIN when I played Resistance 3 a day ago...only my second time playing. Sat through an update when I first played, too. Cleared Meteos in StarFox 3D while I waited, though.

Jim while I hate ps3 firmware updates also, you really do come off like an asshole in this article. Anyway hopefully Vita can get this under control.
It's kind of unfair to say it's pointless Jim. The PS3 remained secure for a very long time. What, 4 or 5 years? That's a lifetime for an electronic computing device to not get hacked.

The PS3 remained secure for as long as it did because none of those capable felt like being bothered with it. What, cracked 2 or 3 months after Sony threw down the gauntlet..... that's like a life time for a hacker to strip away nominal security.

Until I see otherwise, Sony's track record with what they promise is sketchy at best. The feature removal on the PS3's, the non-starter that was the PSP-Go, and the amusing game of "whack-a-mole" that they (still?) play with the PSP. All in the name of (paraphrased) 'improving end user experience'. My PS3 is permanently offline running factory firmware and I feel like a better person for doing so. I'm also not seeing anything that is leaping out at me saying I HAVE to buy one of these things (the Vita) -- I'm sure it'll happen, but why hurry? In the world of gaming these days it seems like early adopter is actually code for "beta tester". To be clear, that comment is directed at all three console makers.
