Sony: PS Vita does not have any problems in Japan photo

Some would say that clawing together 535,423 sales since December 17 isn't a very impressive launch for the PlayStation Vita, especially when 321,407 of those sales were had in the first week. Sony, however, thinks it's pretty good going.

"Now the company has not publicly announced the units of shipping and sales, at the appropriate time, we would do so. But as far as the sell-through, three weeks have passed and sell-through is 500,000," claimed chief financial officer Masaru Kato. "So as a start, I think we had a very -- a good start.

"... Including software and hardware, we are carrying out sales promotions and we do it to boost the sales, and we do not think we have any problems."

Long-term, the PS Vita will most likely be fine, but one can't deny that the early goings have been rather disappointing. Well, unless you're a Sony executive, where outright denial comes as standard.

I do wonder how it's going to launch in other territories. The 3DS has found it's feet, but only after finally putting out stronger software and a steep price cut, despite the DS having a pretty strong brand.

I expect more or less expect the same for the Vita. The mobile market has evolved, and it doesn't seem like a the market will embrace a games only device with a price north of $200.

These seems to be a fair bit of hype for the vita here in the states so I'm interested in seeing how its going to do here.

The launch lineup seems tailored towards the west as well, kinda makes me wonder why it was launched in Japan first.

The problem with the launch in Japan was there isn't any interesting Japanese games. NA and EU should be fine.

SexyChoco nailed it. Once MH hits nothing else will matter. It will be an interesting showdown though, since 3ds is getting two MH's. But if the Vita version has better online then... Yep.

Not even just better online - a massive high resolution screen!

MH should always look epic!

I agree with SC. Monster Hunter will probably make people realize "Oh hey the PSVita exists!" and a kazillion copies will be sold. If anything, I'm more worried how the Vita will do in the other regions.

I don't know about MH turning around Japan, considering the 3DS will most likely have at least one MH title of their own before the Vita. Doing everything another system does is great, but it doesn't help you when you're $80 more expensive, not including the required memory card.

I think it'll be a DS/PSP split again in the market. The Vita will always be in second, but a respectable, profitable second.

I really don't think MHV will have as big an effect now that the 3ds also has it.
Remember, the only reason most gamers even bought a psp was for MH: do you think they would have done so if it was on the ds?(if the ds could have handled it, that is.)

The same happened to the 3ds and now look at it. The Japanese market does not work as the us market and destructoid should have that in mind. Once the PSV have the correct software for the japanese people, it will become an unstoppable force. That is why Sony is confident.

I don't think this is denial actually. I believe the vita is doing as well as they expected.
I think their business model initially is that it furthers the PlayStation brand name, and comes into its own with time.
If you walk into a store in Japan, buying a ps3 looks a lot more attractive if it's going to have vita connectivity in the future...

Furthermore, software isn't the main reason for "low" sales; there are a number of factors at play including cheaper competitors with fuller libraries.
A lack of software is just one of many obstacles the vita faces.

ORLY? Sony saying the Vita has no problem in Japan is akin to saying 3DS had a great launch with a great selection of games - complete bollocks. As Sexual Chocolate and others have said, once Monster Hunter hits they'll do fine.

Sony says alot of BS, but I don't think this is one of those times. People are always quick to say something performed poorly sales wise, even though they aren't sure what the target goal was. It would be foolish to think the Vita would be as successful as the 3DS in it's launch. The 3DS is cheaper, and has a larger library of games due to being released nearly a year before the Vita. I'm sure Sony understood that, and set their expectations lower. Considering that the Vita launched a little after Mario Kart, Monster Hunter & Mario 3D Land made it onto the 3DS I think they did alright.

I was very disappointed with Vita's long load times but other than that, it's pretty sexy. I'm sure it'll pick up steam about 6 months after launch, much like the 3DS did.

Those saying "wait til Monster Hunter hits" need to keep in mind that Monster Hunter is already on 3DS and MH4 is pledged to 3DS already.

Nintendo's handhelds play host to not just Monster Hunter, but also Dragon Quest these days and that's before Nintendo's very own Pokemon and their other IPs are factored in. Its just something I wouldn't underestimate in terms of influencing consumers. I also wouldn't take a Sony rep at their word because Capcom sure hasn't said anything on the matter.

Dividing the Monster Hunter audience with ports would be bad for Capcom. MH did wonders for PSP because it was to PSP what Pokemon is to Nintendos handhelds - a killer app. But a lack of exclusivity changes things. People will go with the more established system. And keep in mind PSP still has a large, established userbase in Japan.

That doesn't mean a win for Vita, as we all saw how much of an impact Pokemon still had on selling the DS just before 3DS came out. 3DS didn't sell copies of Pokemon, that's for sure.

Think about it, if they made a Monster Hunter for Sony, would you really want to gamble on Vita when you could make all that money on 3DS or PSP with how established they are? Capcom seems to be moving to 3DS.

Of course, regardless of system, Capcom needs to pull its head out of its ass and get online multiplayer in any future version of the series. The reason Monster Hunter ritually fails in the west is the lack of that key feature. We're not Japan and friends with handhelds aren't always within spitting distance like they are in Japan.

Yeah, Sony's not actually in denial about the Vita right now. It appears that many US game journalists are. Every system ever had a massive percentage drop after the launch week, and we all know the reasons why, so I won't go into them.

And TSP, there is no 'if' regarding a Monster Hunter Vita, it is coming. I found this out with my Google-fu in less time it took you to write your post.

I didn't buy a psp for monster hunter, and I won't by a vita for it either. :P

I've never bought 4 launch titles for any system, I guess the vita is going to change that. If its any indication for the future its a good one. Let's just hope the software keeps coming, and that we get a lot of niche jrpgs like the psp! :D

Same here. For instance Mod Nation Racers took abit to load up meanwhile Mario Kart 7 loads up nearly instantly and that game is in 3D. Wipeout in particular took awhile to load up, I could have done a whole race in the time it took to load. I understand that some games need loading because they have alot to process, but if Nintendo handhelds have been able to have no/short load times I don't understand why Sony consoles can't. Especially when their are similar games on 3DS that have no load times.

I do not think Sony or the PSV are in as big of trouble as it is made out to be (then again, I did I not think the 3DS was ever in much trouble either). However, the North American and European sales are going to be pretty critical. We will know within the year where the PSV stands. As it appears now, there is a strong line up of games being released, and hopefully this momentum continues throughout the year. I was pretty on fence about getting a PSV and I am still going to wait a few months since I am pretty busy right now with life, but hopefully by the summer or fall I will have my hands on one of these beasts.

I think the Vita is a pretty cool machine, the graphics are great, the joy nubs are not bad and the console itself has a nice weight to it.
If I had to say anything bad about it I would say that the bubble UI is awkward and the loading times can be ridiculous (I'm looking at you UMvC3..)

So yeah,it will do fine in the long run IMO, specially when P4:The Golden and MH Vita come out.

The Vita is right about where I expected it to be in terms of sales. It has to be a bit disheartening for Sony though, as Tales of Innocence recently dropped in Japan and Vita sales remained flat with only an addition 3500 Vita's sold during that period. Combined with no new Monster Hunter games hitting the Vita, it could be a recipe for disaster.

Long term, I think the Vita will be a modest success for Sony. I expect it to play out similarly to the PSP vs DS showdown.

One things for sure though, Sony can't afford to keep leaking billions of dollars every year, with expections of $2.9 billion in losses for fiscal 2011, They better right the ship quickly.

Expensive system with expensive extras, some of which are required in order to play.. I don't get what people don't get about why its slow goings right now..

As more stuff comes out, specially with the world wide launch, and prices on certain things go down, AND more PSN support the handheld (like PS1 classics).. the Vita will gain steam and ground, and be just fine.

It'll be okay.. The Fantastic Four will be in to kick Doooooom's ass eventually.

I don't know why people are saying that these launch titles are going to sell the system. The only titles which are system sellers are MH and/or FF in Japan, a COD and/or GOW in the US and a COD and/or Fifa in Europe. Nintendo doesn't need any of these because the reason their consoles/handhelds sell is 1st part titles. The Vita is a beautiful piece of hardware and if I hadn't given up handheld gaming for my smartphone I might be interested in getting one. Unfortunately the outrageous price total will keep me and many consumers away. I don't expect much from this handheld, with parents buying 3DS/Smartphones for their kids the only market I see for the Vita is the hardcore commuter which is a very small base in the West. Good luck Vita, you're going to need it.

As soon as they release some Japan centric games, like Persona 4 portable, and Monster Hunter for the thing they'll be fine. Honestly it was a dumb launch for the Vita without any big exclusive RPGS. It should have launched with a FF title.
