On the PlayStation Blog, Sony has issued a new statement regarding the recent PlayStation Network and Qriocity downtime. Resolving the situation is likely going to take longer than we initially thought, although work is being performed "around the clock," according to senior director of corporate communications and social media, Patrick Seybold.
"Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure," he continues. "Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security."
"We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available."
Here's hoping Sony will make up for this downtime once the services are back online, or at the very least, get them up in a timely fashion. You have to feel bad for everyone who just bought Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat.

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
How the tables have turned.
Not trying to troll/flame/whatever, I'm genuinely curious as to why people think this.
Even so, when the dust has settled I would be delighted to hear that the culprit(s) is going to prison, or getting kicked in the balls repeatedly.
While I dont think anyone really deserves a freebie over what is essentially extended maintenance, anything more than nothing (a free game, free avatar, free whatever) would serve for good PR and damage control.
PSN is required to play some games, even in single player, and, as is my understanding access to, PSN is required for installs --including mandatory installs.
PSN isn't just online multiplayer. It's more than that, and without it, even single player games are inoperable. I'm not saying Sony owes anyone anything, but it's a much bigger fuck up than some realize.
I don't care if they said infrastructure, these things need to be done.
Oh yeah, Browser update while you're at it.
"IT'S FREE, SO WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL"
granted, I no longer own a PS3 - but man if that doesn't set me off.
And to the people saying you paid for PSN access for life when you bought your PS3, I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way. The way I've always understood it is an extra service provided to us for free that allows us to do a bunch of things, from playing online to getting DLC and games. But since no more of our money goes towards the service (PS+ is for that, there I can see a legitimate gripe) we can't expect compensation from a few days of downtime. It sucks, no doubt, but they don't really owe us anything since we aren't paying for anything (again, except for PS+)
But it is free. And its not that big of a deal, at least from what we've been told so far. If CC info of subscribers has been compromised, then yeah, its a HUGE deal.
But so far? Its just been down for like 3 days or so. I'm sure everyone can find something else to do in the interim.
not shut down the entire service cuz its POSSIBLE there could be a hack
sony is just fucking stupid
It's free so stop bitching. Sony doesn't owe you anything.
@tvandlust
Strangely enough, title updates are working. As is Netflix if you just keep cancelling logging in. The bulk of PSN is down, but oddly enough, pockets are open.
I don't mind hackers at all. They are a necessary evil in the IT world.
1) The major selling point of Portal 2 on PS3 was the fact that it came with a free copy for PC. However, to activate that, you have to link your Steam and PSN accounts, which is impossible right now with PSN down.
2) I'm a Hulu Plus subscriber, which doesn't work without PSN. Missing my Daily Show and Colbert Report fixes. Oddly, Netflix is working fine.
3) I'm a PS+ subscriber.
So yeah, a little gesture of goodwill would be nice. I won't throw a fit and file charges or anything if I don't get one, I'd just appreciate it.
