Sony 'probably' announced Home too early photo

PlayStation Home has not exactly been the most warmly received of ventures, and part of that is most certainly down to the two-year build of hype. Microsoft got away with fairly useless Avatars because they weren't built up for years beforehand. Home, however, has not been so lucky.

"Initially, there was real excitement from people, because we were showing something really different and that had a lot of potential," suggested Home director Peter Edward. "And then there’s the realization that, well, we probably announced it too early – GDC 07 was a long time ago. I think there was sort of recognition amongst developers of 'Oh, this is interesting, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.'"

Goodwin also said that the aforementioned developers were "cagey" about being involved with Home, unsure if they wanted to take part. However, he stated that studios should be excited for Home as it allows them to keep a direct relationship with consumers, and maintain interest in its games with tournaments and leaderboards, not to mention direct feedback. So basically, they're touting Home as a slightly more colorful Internet message board.

Maybe with a few more months/years, Home will be something worth getting excited about. Right now, I simply don't want it on my Hard Drive again.

seems like a big pointless waste of time to me. but hey, what do i know? I would have been happy with a couple of yogurt pots and some string in the box

No you see it wasn't that they announced Home too early. the mistake was actually announcing Home and not slapping a game designer or whatever when he first had the idea.

Well, I don't know about anyone else but I have too many games to play. I can't be bothered with silly avatar nonsense. There are worlds to conquer/create. Stories to be unraveled/discovered. Characters to be murdered/protected. Tons of fun to be had at every turn on the gaming block where Home is that dark alley you see people hanging out in for no reason. Don't look them in the eye, just keep walking...

I laughed at the picture for a long time. Then laughed at Home.

I will try the Red Bull island and the EA Sports Dome though. Maybe one day it'll be my time waster, but for now it's Little Big Planet.

I honestly don't mind Home. It'll bloom eventually.
Eventually....

It's a beta, keep your panties out of a bunch.

I'd be honestly bitching about Bethesda releasing a game that hasn't been tested on all platforms before release, let alone finished.. (level cap of 20?! this is a DEMO!) Not to mention the fact that some customers were snubbed and basically shat upon for buying it for their preferred system.

Check out their Message boards under PS3 support...

This is more BS than Home being boring.. Home's gonna be boring until it's DONE.

At least SCEA tells us what is up, and doesn't leave us guessing if they're ever going to add on.. or better yet they released a game for the 360, but they aren't releasing patches or content for it... Just for the PS.

If you ask me this is way more bullshit than home being boring, or lackluster... It's BETA.
The game I'm referring to is at least 3 months old, and they've already told 1.08 million people that they won't be able to play the expansions, or go beyond level 20 in this game.

gah BULLSHIT!

Home just isn't my thing, but I imagine if I wanted to wander around and talk with strangers on the internet, I'd love it.

They didn't just announce it too early, they also should've waited with releasing it to the public :p

@Cotton:

I just tried the Red Bull area and it was boring. Everything was closed off. All that you could do was walk around. What was so fun about it? And I never saw an EA area. It downloaded new Central Plaza and Home Theatre sections, but there was nothing fun about the Red Bull and no indication of EA.

@John B - Brad posted a story about it. It's coming in a few months or so.

Did you play the Red Bull Airplane game?

Yeah, but they have a really obscure way of doing that. I just kept walking near the fence at the planes. Finally I must have reached the "magic spot" and the option to start the race popped up at the bottom. But there was a bunch of people asking what they were supposed to do to start the race. Sony did a very poor job of explaining that part.

they never should've announced 'Home' at all. period.

it was an embarrasingly obvious knee-jerk reaction to the success M$ was having with 'Live'. those were my exact feelings when they first announced it and they haven't changed.

they had no killer-app's, consoles sitting on shelves and were getting crucified in both enthusiast and mainstream press for the insane launch price. so instead of simply offering something comparable to Live, which would've been the practicle thing to do, Sony decided to one-up them with a 'second life' knock-off.

what a waste of resources...

I know I would hate home a lot less if they had just announced it when the beta went public.

I like in the above " suggested Home director Peter Edward " on something different, with potential. I don't know about this Home. It's a pile of crap. I went on it once, granted I was illuminated on some whiskey, but even then I thought it was a ridiculous thing to do with your time. The 'techno' area? What the hell is going on here... This is a great example of current-gen fail.

The world is boring and uninteresting. When I booted up Home, I'm sitting in this empty apartment. I'd moved some furniture around, that sucked. Went on to the balcony and couldn't jump off, that sucked. Then I tried to leave and had to wait for this arena to load. The loading and installing sucked. I made a comment about this thing being slow, and someone said "get an new hard-drive". Yeah, I'll do that for Home. Awesome. End of the day, I could definitely do without Home existing. I would of rather had the R&D be invested into new IP's or other OS features.

The 360 avatars should go away too. This is just getting foolish.

Announced too early AND released too late. Should have announced it a month before launch, should have launched it a year ago.

"It's a beta" is an awful excuse. Sony promised it wouldn't release Home until it was perfect. Also, if it's a beta, Sony shouldn't already be charging for items.

It's not a beta. It's an unfinished product being called a beta as a cheap cover-up.

I find it funny that ps3 owners had to wait years just to get this overbaked piece of crap Second Life clone, and when people complain that it sucks, Sony's response is, as it is with every complaint they get, asking people to wait. Do they not realize that they ALWAYS use that as an excuse for EVERY failing and its why the vast majority of the fanbase that would have followed them into the maws of hell in the ps2 era now feel nothing but anger and resentment towards them?

I agree w/ the general consensus here. When did Sony (and Microsoft) decide we'd all rather play digital Barbie?

I don't want dress-up non-games.
