Sony plans to expand the PlayStation Network to more devices photo

As of right now, Sony's PlayStation Network is only available on the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Portable. Oh, and the PC, sort of. But they're looking to go bigger, says Sony CEO Howard Stringer, moving onto other devices. As far as what devices they're aiming for, we'll just have to wait and see.

In an interview with Nikkei Electronics Asia, Stringer lets on that they need the Network to be on more devices, as the PS3 install base limits the possible scale.

"Next we will be expanding the PlayStation Network to hardware other than the PS3, because the number of PS3 units sold puts a limit on the scale of the network possible," Stringer says. "Sony has a vertical structure for each product line, an organizational structure that resists change, so it will take time to achieve this network growth."

That's nice, but what else would you put it on that it would be used? Sony televisions? How would that work for gaming? Is Stringer just running off at the mouth here, or do you think they have something in the works?

Unless there talking about the video store the psn is useless to a device without a controller, so unless he plan on having the psn on the Wii or 360 or improving the PC aspect of psn this doesn't make much sense.

Sounds nice, but what about improving PSN for the PS3 first? I would like more web integration like XBL. Cross game invites would be nice too. I don't really care for party support, so no complaints about that one.

I would love to see the PSN on my GPS screen. Watching movies while I drive is really fun.

I think Stringer is just stupid and doesn't realise, that PSN is already on PSP and PC. Than again it could still come to mobile phones, but that would be stupid.

Well they have an entire music and movie division to still take advantage of. Maybe have PSN on cellphones and portable music players for downloading games , music and videos. If PSN was on standalone dvd/blu-ray players with a harddrive, people could download movies and music straight to their box. Sure none of this helps the PS3 out but it does bring money into the PlayStation division. Also with having PSN across many different devices you can have integration so that any song you download can be played on any of the PSN-devices you own. Hopefully.

Sounds like it'll only be a matter of time until I can check out my trophy count thru my car's Sony stereo.

Oh please god no. Why the hell would I want to access a network made for Playstations (hence the name) on anything other than a Playstation. The whole point of the network is that it gives extra functionality to a game system, for game related purposes. Isn't this what the internet's for? And why the hell would I need to access PSN with my cellphone? Why would I want to? And I hate to break it to the people behind this idea, but how is PSN useful if YOU DON'T OWN A FUCKING PLAYSTATION. How about instead of making the network a stupid mess while in the process of making it microwave compatible, and make it useful like Xbox Live.
