Also, this is terrible news. I'd only be okay with this if the ad was only in the start up.
An idiotic idea.
So because Jim said: What this "scheme" does is warn players in advance that their game is about to be disrupted before presenting the commercial -- in the patent's case an advertisement for a soft drink. After a brief pause, the game will resume and the player will, presumably, have lost all sense of immersion and wonder why he or she is paying a publisher money for the privilege of making it more money.
This leads me to believe F2P is not their intention.
Perhaps, if this patent is utilized, the ads would be part of that... like tv commercials.
Not that it's much better, but with load times in most games the way they are why not just have a commercial then? :p
Hasn't stopped them from advertising in their multiplayer games or spamming Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six with some really shoddy product placement - Axe/Lynx deodorant, Airwaves gum, movie posters for upcoming releases, Nokia phones, etc.
Stay classy!
God do I hope nobody ever has the balls to pull that crap.
What isn't as well known is that they are going to offer an alternative to the above plan. First, you need to buy some red lipstick and a trashy dress. Next, paint up those lips real nice and squeeze into the mini, before leaning over a table. After that, hike up the hem of the dress just enough so that Sony can get a clear view of yer asshole as you spread your cheeks. Then, beg 'em with tears in your eyes to fuck your turd-cutter raw. To make it hurt and hurt good before blowing a stinky wad in your face.
Man, I'm torn between the two plans. Both seem equally as appealing.
Then I read it again and I realized how ludicrous my interpretation was. Sadly.
When it is annoying is when you buy content and still have ads.
If the game is something I shelled out EVEN A SINGLE PENNY for, fuck that noise, right in it's noisehole
Then again, considering Sony has specifically named its Playstation brand as one of their best hope of climbing out of the hole they're in, this is a great idea if Sony's ultimate goal is to speed its own demise.
It's not unlikely that there are other free to play games coming to Sony - it's becoming an alternate revenue stream for some games and additionally it could also become more common in various apps (like Crackle which offers free streaming movies). PSN Home is another place where commercials might be used during load times before launching into a free game - there are a couple of bigger free to play games coming to PSN Home I believe as well.
Sterling is right though most things don't get past patent stages and I doubt this will. If this is a model they intend to use it's sale suicide.
Who's to say this isn't advertisements on facebook games that take place within the loading of a level? You know, like most of those fucking games do now.
And anyway, pretty much everything else does this already. Try watching some videos on Crackle on the 360.
I just love how everyone jumps on the worst possible idea when nothing has even been said yet. Lighten up.
Thank you for correcting me...I haven't seen the movie in years and I'm running on empty with no sleep.
