Sony patents a Kinect-like device photo

A patent for a "user-driven three-dimensional interactive gaming environment" plugs into a PlayStation to read players movements in a 3D space. Does that sound like some other TV-topping peripheral you know? 1 Zing Point for you if you said EyeToy.

Kotaku found the newly published patent of this Kinect-like device just recently, though it was filed late last year. Richard Marks, the guy behind PlayStation Move, filed the patent. Hold on to the night.

Yikes. After seeing how PS Move went over, let's hope this thing stays in Patent Land.

That looks EXACTLY like an eyetoy plugged into a PS2. It even has a wired controller. Please don't do this Sony. Put more focus on the Move. I really want it to be a success at some point.

Well, if Richard Marks is involved, I'll be Right Here Waiting for this product's launch. Skipping anything he designed would be a real Hazard. I Keep Coming Back to the Move, as it left me Satisfied. He's an excellent product engineer, Now and Forever.

I actually want a Kinect on my PS3 at this point but I'll keep the Move as my go-to sex toy.

The casuals have GOT to be thoroughly milked dry by now right? They aren't going to buy yet another multihundred dollar piece of hardware just so they can play a dancing game and sports minigames will they? I honestly don't think this thing will see the light of day, Sony just likes to go patent crazy with every idea they come up with, so when they decide to rip off a product another company proves can be successful, they can say "WE DID NOT COPY YOU SEE WE HAVE A 20 YEAR OLD PATENT OF THAT PRODUCT HOOKED UP TO A PS2222222222222"

Holy shit, I just peed myself. had to take a closer look, F'n brilliant.

OT: Yeah screw this, give the Move more love. I really love FPS with Move Support. Kinect and Wii cornered the Dance market, don't try and play catch up at this point. Play to your strengths sony.

so who is betting they will announce it during E#, claim that they are revolutionizing gaming industry just to push it out of the door with collection of terrible knock-offs of Kinect games just to forget about it's existence few months later - just like any other playstation related accessory.
they couldn't even compete with Wii in terms of quality games that featured motion-controls either in terms of casual or core games. do they really think they can compete with a powerhouse like Kinect?

As long as it's something that works alongside the Move I'm cool with that. A camera that can read that I've taken one hand off my sharpshooter to punch an enemy for a melée attack. That'd be awesome!

Dale read the patent before you copy and paste an article from Kotaku. It clearly states in the description of the patent:

"CLAIM OF PRIORITY

[0001] This application claims priority as a continuation of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 10/448,614, filed May 29, 2003, and entitled "SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PROVIDING A REAL-TIME THREE-DIMENSIONAL INTERACTIVE ENVIRONMENT," which is incorporated herein by reference.

CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0002] This application is related to U.S. patent application Ser. No. 10/365,120, filed Feb. 11, 2003, and entitled "Method and Apparatus for Real-Time Motion Capture," which is incorporated herein by reference"

This patent is a continuation of another patent Sony filed in 2003 for the same tech being demonstrated here by Sony's Richard Marks at GDC 2003. http://goo.gl/3NB23

The playstation in the image looked exactly like a PS2, so I thought this was a clever article about patenting the eyetoy in relation to kinect. I was going to come in with a Slowpoke news image, but now that would probably make me look like an ass.

Move is already all of Wii M+ combined with half of Kinect technology. If the Eye can recognize depth and track objects in 3D, then it would be capable of everything its competitors' tech can do.

I don't necessarily think it's necessary, as Move is so underutilized as it is, but it couldn't hurt anything. Move is with it just for HD light gun games, but I wish existing games for Move were compatible with Sharpshooter (unlike RE4+5, which doesn't allow for shooting with the trigger or panning the camera with wand direction - both of which would be the intuitive implementation of Move).

I actually really enjoyed Move in the few games that implemented it. Killzone 3 was more enjoyable (I don't really do a lot of online competitive so I can't speak to that - only campaign) with Move functionality.

That said, if they continue Move I hope Sony allows the current move controllers on their next console. Can't really see myself buying more of those.

I have tried out the wii kinect and move and I personally like the kinect. The wii is for hyperactive kids since they are the only ones who can enjoy it. Move is nice yet only one camera limits what you can do with it. I also got sick of spending 5 min configuring move every time I wanted to use it, so I got rid if it. Kinect will auto configure, sometime you need to adjust it but that it little problem. Kinect is actually fun to use and enjoyable since it uses 3 cameras over one camera with a tight lens.

Are we already at that point in the Sony cycle where we call the latest PlayStation accessory a failure yet?

I love that patents still use box shaped tube TV's in their drawings. Even if this was (and it could have been if we weren't given a date for when it was submitted) before flat TV's became the rage, it's so much fun to see.

Commercial success or failure, i don't care. I fucking LOVE my Move.

A couple of weeks ago, i had a Move overload, I bought Tiger Woods 12, Resistance 3, got Killzone 3 back off my mate and played some MAG, all with the move and loved. every. minute.

I've not once regretted buying 2 move controllers, a nunchuck, and a sharpshooter.

- well, I don't REALLy need 2 move controllers now, but still it's nice to have a charged backup!

Light gun craving fixed.
