Sony: Only the most hardcore gamers use PlayStation Home photo

Sony has claimed that only the most hardcore PS3 gamers use PlayStation Home. That sounds like a failure, given the services casual, Second Life-esque dressing, but if Sony wants to spin the fact that a comparatively small demographic is using it, then they're welcome.

They buy more games than the average PS3 user, they play more games than the average PS3 user," said Sony's Jack Buser about the average Home user. "They also watch more movies than the average PS3 user, who is already a highly self-selective consumer.

"We're talking about rabid consumers of media and hardcore gamers. That's who these people are."

So, Sony's vision of the Home user is an obsessive, unerringly loyal fanboy, the kind who gets upset when somebody even looks at a PS3 funny and then goes crying to N4G about it so like-minded simpletons can cry along with him. Yep ... that sounds like the kind of idiot who'd love PlayStation Home.

TLDR version:

"We're keeping PS Home up for those 15 little boners who still use it. Ha, we love those guys."

Playing PS Home doesn't make you a hardcore gamer, it makes you lame. Honestly, I was excited when it was announced. But it plays nothing like what you think. You have to pay for all these clothes and furniture. After a couple visit here and there, I gave up. Its just not fun.

Oh snap epic! =-D

I love my ps3, but the only reason to get onto home is to slaughter random idiots at chess. Even then I would have had to WAIT IN LINE sometimes.

So, yeah, no.

home could have been awesome. the idea of meeting up in home and getting friends together and gathering to someones space. talking about what game youre going to play. everyone puts theirs discs in and the match starts with those people playing.

if only it was that easy.

Home had such potential... but it really is just a second life sim type thing now. What they needed for Home was what was initially discussed by the UT3 devs - the ability for groups to meet up in home, form a party, then launch into a game and retain that party. That's what Home needed to offer for "hardcore" gamers.

Look.. I have both systems.

Home is a F2P bonus thing thats run by microtransactions. Its just a place to chat with idiots or play some minigames. I personally load it up every once in a blue moon to see whats up, usually nothing amazing goes on there.

But, to put it into perspective, at least they aren't charging me to use awesome features like facebook, twitter, espn, and youtube. lol.

Really good article on Giant Bomb, hats off to them. This article? Not so much. The last paragraph makes no sense and isn't supported by anything in the original article. I think Sterling just wanted to put his trolling boots on again, which really points out how much better the Giant Bomb piece is.

I think the typical Home user is just someone who doesn't have a PC, or isn't very knowledgeable about the PC, and thus ends up doing their virtual socializing on a gaming console. That seems to be what he means about a hardcore gamer, in that we're talking about someone who always has their PS3 on, the way others always have their PC on.

Strangely, unlike others, I'm not outraged if some people like to gather at Home. I'll go my way, they can go theirs.

Yeha, Home is not a great place, at least for me. It is not much fun and ended being just a glorified chat room.

That said, I must say that what Jim Sterling is saying about the people who may enjoy going to home, as seem below:

'So, Sony's vision of the Home user is an obsessive, unerringly loyal fanboy, the kind who gets upset when somebody even looks at a PS3 funny and then goes crying to N4G about it so like-minded simpletons can cry along with him. Yep ... that sounds like the kind of idiot who'd love PlayStation Home. '

Is unnecessary and done in an atempt to create flames. The people who goes to Home and may enjoy home are not idiots just because Jim or anyone else does not like home. The fact that people like Home, COD, Farmville or anything is not and automatic sign of idiocy. Saying tha they are idiots for liking something you don't like Jim, is a sign of idiocy.

I've always got the impresion that Sony looks at online play as an afterthought. Microsoft advertises the crap out of the fact that games can be played online (big Xbox Live logo on the box) but Sony seems content with saying "oh, yeah. I guess you can play online too, but why would you want to do that?"

That’s fucking genius!

Either Jack Buser is completely out of touch or he has some survey results that we don't know about. Either way, just because gamers buy a lot of games does not make them hardcore gamers. Casuals might buy even more and probably do. I LOVE my PS3 but Home is only really good for people who want a second-life type experience and who want to casually chat with other folks. I almost never use it unless I feel like talking about some games with some strangers. I had a great discussion about Demon's Souls a while back.

Only those who can not interact with real people frequent Home. I spent 2 minutes there when I first got a PS3 and found it to be one of the most creepy experiences found in gaming. Sony says the most moronic things. How are these hardcore gamers playing all these games if their days are spent in Home. This is as silly as Sony bragging about 75 million PSN subscribers.

I buy at least a dozen retail games per year and you will never find me in Home. Perhaps it's because I already have a wife and kids.

Have you tried Home? Tell me it's not a creepy dirty experience!
