Sony: Only 900 of our stolen credit cards were active photo

Yesterday, it was revealed that Sony Online Entertainment got itself hacked for a laugh. The result was the theft of 12,700 credit card numbers. Yet more bad PR and panic circulated the Internet, but there's a bit of "good" news for those potentially affected -- only 900 of these cards were active.

Turns out that the nefarious hackers ransacked an outdated database that went back as far as 2007, so most of the cards were invalid at the time of the breach. Nevertheless, if you've ever signed up for SOE's wares, you might want to check your statements a little more thoroughly.

It's a minor positive in a whirlwind of bad news for Sony. At this rate, things couldn't get worse if Jack Tretton kicked a puppy right on its arsehole. In fact, this might be his only chance to get away with it unnoticed. Do it, Jack!

24.6 million SOE accounts potentially compromised [GI.biz]

900 out of 12,000 is not that shabby really.

We had a debit card skimming incident at work and we have about 12,000 members and had around 400 cards that were effected and had to be cancelled.

There is insurance for both parties involved (Bank/member), but people still like to make a big hubbub about it.

I'm confused. Does this mean if I didn't have a PS3 in 2007 I'm probably safe?

ONLY 900 CREDIT CARDS?! I heard that one guy raped 900 women out of 12,700 women present. It's alright though, because he only got 14% of them.

Credit and debit card info gets stolen all the time. From gas stations to restaurants, it happens. In this age, you gotta monitor your card accounts regularly to catch these things. My credit card info got stolen at a gas station about 2 minutes away from me and turns out my friend had the same thing happen. If you ever use your credit card on the net, gotta prepare for the dangers and always be cautious.

While this is still a bad happening for Sony I can't help but laugh at the hackers a little bit. I just got the image of them as 1920's crooks bringing the bag of goods back to their boss.

"We do good Boss?!"
"Gah! Knuckleheads! These ares expireds!"

"only" 900. good one sony.

also, by "not active", is it safe to assume they just mean that the expiration dates were bad? because , you know, if you have the old expiration date you can pretty much just add three years to that and i bet you're going to see much more than 900 of those cards working.

Sony must be the luckiest corporation on Earth.

How else do could you explain it's relevance despite numerous fuckups?

@runtheplacered sorry for the typos (damn BB). I am sincere in my statement. I really don't know how corporations of this size exist with these constant failures. Maybe they're too big to fail like our struggling banking secctor. -_-

I can't wait for Sony's E3 conference this year. It'll be like walking in on a relative fucking a chicken and them seeing them at Easter dinner.

With E3 only a month away, it will be interesting!!!

Sony's going through what Microsoft went through a decade ago, nothing more. They've not had anyone blatantly pick on their software and security holes, but you can bet they'll take it seriously from now on.

People forget what Windows XP was like initially, the dozens of viruses that were designed just around its flaws. Blaster, Sobig.f, Sasser... I despised Microsoft back in those days. They did learn their lesson and got much better at internet security... Sony will do the same.

Then why do they even keep them? I just went through a similar hassle with MS - they still had my old CC but I wanted to remove it. Even though it was expired I had to put in a new number (used a pre-paid card) before I could delete the other one.

I had a feeling 14% was too high. I only get stuff like that wrong 14% of the time.

I guess those women just need to go to the police station and have their rapes cancelled then, right? Then everything'll be OK.

...Because it's apparently the same kind of thing, right? ;)

That is a shame that a company Like Sony will make credit card information easily accessible to hackers.
