Sony Online: Future could bring 'full MMOs that are designed for the PSP' photo

Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley has revealed the possibility of massively multiplayer online games for the PlayStation Portable.

"We think it's a world-class device," he said, "In the future, we see full MMOs that are designed for the PSP."

Smedley cites the 34 million units sold and the worldwide connectivity as a reason why MMOs on the handheld would be a no-brainer. But in a case of walking before they run, he sees the opportunity for integration with existing MMOs before launching a full-on title. He gives examples, including using it to train pets for a game like Free Realms, or a leveling up mini-game that you can play on the go.

Considering the type of addictive behavior we see linked to MMOs tethered to homes, the idea of an MMO-on-the-Go is almost frightening. But at the same time, if it gets people out of the house, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Would you play an MMO on the PSP?

I'd get behind that. A portable MMO would be pretty cool.

Depends on if it's subscription based or not, I'd feel silly paying a monthly fee for a portable game.

portable MMO would be cool, the problem with an MMO-on-the-go is as stated conectivity ... and afaik there's no worldwide roaming on wifi :-)

Hmm...As a always-on MMO? No. Wireless is not THAT ubiquitous. As a "Leveling Mini-game that sends and receives new data whenever it can" kinda thing? Maaaaybe. It would have to be a different kinda game though, Portable stuff, in my opinion, works best as play while you're waiting in line, maybe 2-5 minute per "game" once you start haveing long term things, you run into problems. But that's just my opinion.

I never knew the psp had sold 34 million *unites*!

But yeah I agree with the others, the major stumbling block here is the transfer of data, maybe the next psp could have something similar to 3G connectivity to make this a viable option.

Hey, you know what's really clever, pointing out a typo and going "Har har, what's a (insert typo here)?" That really never gets old and never, ever stops being funny. Comedy gold every time.

Ive been waiting for this since even before WOW. I actually wished FF11 was playable through PSP so I could do all my hours of grinding away from my PC. This would have allowed me to at least travel and XP while at work, school, or level up in Guilds while doing other stuff that doesn't restrain me to my PC.

Didn't they just release Phantasy Star online for the PSP in Japan? That's still an MMO, right?
