Sony officially makes trophies mandatory in January photo

Since trophies were announced as Sony's answer to Microsoft's achievements, its implementation has been a little patchy. The worst part is hearing "[game name] to have trophies" as if it's a big deal. By this point, a game having trophies should not be bloody news.

Thankfully, Sony is going to put an end to such nonsense by officially declaring mandatory trophy support in January 2009. It was a confirmed by a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson today.

This is generally great news for PS3 owners, but it does have its down side. PlayStation 3 fan sites are going to have 78% less to blog about now that trophy support is no longer "news."

Funny thing: There are quite a few games, that are getting late releases in Europe after January 2009 and will most definitely not get any trophy support.

Meh. I only have like 5 so far, and I don't really care if I get them or not. It's a bad move in my opinion.

@raasbo

I don't see why not. There needs to be some standard of implementation otherwise developers won't really go for it full throttle.

I may have some personal issues with the 360, but I'll give MS enough credit on the fact that their efforts to have unified standards across all games has ensured that the core components of XBL work ALL the time. Not just achievements, but cross game chat, cross game messaging, etc.

Good thing to see Sony step up on this.

Yeah, and it won't be retroactive. Way to go, Sony. Don't make developers waste a few hours to come up with some achievements, or minutes with that multi-platform games is total bullshit. I hope their next announcement is that the majority of exclusive games have to be decent by 2010. I own a PS3.

I hate our soft modern age and its insistence that every game gets a trophy.

You can't have a WINNER without LOSERS, people, and there is no I in TEAM. Although there is a ME. But it's grammatically incorrect, and SAMIT will ride you like a three-legged dwarf PONY if you even think about trying it.

I can see why it took them so long to make trophies mandatory. It takes time to crowbar that into a game that's near release, and in this environment that kind of delay can be a death sentence.

It's about frickin' time. Sony should have set a specific time right from the getgo.

I mean, in most cases it's a moot point, but in the case of multiplatform games, it simply doesn't make sense for Sony games to NOT have trophy support. Look at Fallout 3, for example. They claim it's "coming" but they don't even hint at when. I can't imagine it's even remotely difficult to enable something that's already running on the 360.

Oh, and people will still blog about trophies. Look at 360 achievements. Just about every high profile game gets a blog post when the achievements are revealed.

You're job is secure, my good man.

@raasbo

How can it be a bad move? It's not like any developer will stop releasing a game because Sony forces the inclusion of trophies.

raasbo: why is this a "bad move"? Because you're not into them?

I have about 220 trophies right now from simply playing what I like. This sounds good to me. It can't be that hard for developers to implement these. Gives people a reason to replay games and brag with their friends.

THANK FUCK. It's about goddamn time. They should do the same for custom soundtracks and DualShock 3 (i.e., vibration) support.

Also, what MaxVest said. Don't even think about it!

Took them long enough. I never understood why people defended Sony for giving developers freedom to not conform to so many standards that Microsoft requires on 360. You shouldn't be worrying about what's best for the developer, you should be concerned for what's best for the consumer. Here's hoping Sony gets the message and steps it up with other occasional features that have always been standard on 360.

Cool I was a little sad panda that fallout had none, it's just nice to have to go out of your way to snatch certain things to get the trophies.

about freaking time. Sony has been losing so much money and all their
titles have as well because of this. If they actually went back and
added them to games as well they would make so much profit, the
nimrods. As a ps3 owner their handling of this really pisses me off.
At least they are getting the ball rolling now. uhg.
