Sony not known for a 'patch-patch mentality' claims Maguire photo

Home has been a bit of a whipping boy in recent months thanks to its continued delays. Sony UK's managing director Ray Maguire, however, would argue that to mock Sony is unfair, especially as it's just trying to make Home the best it can be.

We have to make sure that things are born at the right time, that the infrastructures are right and are tested, and that they actually work," explains Maguire when addressing the lengthy development process. "It's one of the things that PlayStation has been known for - a plug-and-play mentality, rather than a patch-patch mentality."

It's easy to kick Home about, but if Sony is not just giving us a blast from the bullsh*t hose, I can respect the decision to hold back a product until it's finished. Of course, one could argue that Home is not exactly the sort of thing Sony should be focusing so heavily on, given its main market, but at least if it's a waste of our time, it'll be a high quality waste of our time.

"No patch-patch mentality"? How many firmware updates has Sony released for the PSP/PS3 again?

I like the concept behind their “plug-and-play mentality,” but it's bound to lead to some issues (re: LBP recall).

Well, I don't invite people over to my home unless it's cleaned up and presentable. So I can see where Sony is coming from.

Honestly I think home was just a "cool idea" when first introduced, I'm willing to bet they saw the potential for expanding the home experience and that's what they keep working on

And just when they think they've "got it" somebody gets a bright idea and they try to implement more into the home experience.

Either that or it's been one giant clusterfuck from the get go

@ Infinite Obscurity: I wouldn't really call that the same thing. they aren't patching up problems with those firmware updates so much, they are adding features and improving. things can always be improved.

You know, they are only being mocked because they announced the thing too early.
Imagine a world without game announcements until they are on the stores. A world without hype! where we'd buy the games based on reality and not on some weird, unmeetable (is that a word?) expectations. Where we'd be playing and not lingering on how awesome the play will be.

fuck, I ranted. Sorry.

Maybe they will release "Patch-Patch Revolution" or call firmware upgrades "Functionality Embellishments"

Time is too precious to be walking around inviting random dudes to your virtual house so they can check out your precious trophies. Quite frankly it's something that sounds pretty gay and not that many people give a fuck about.

What do you think will be the male to female ratio here? This aint the soccer mom loving Wii you know. Have fun in the virtual sausage party!

Yeah, by not a "patch-patch" mentality, Sony means that they don't want to release a product that isn't fully functioning right out of the gate.

The PS3 has always been fully functioning. The firmware updates are adding more features. You only "patch" things that are broken. I think there's a pretty big distinction.

That being said, I have no idea if I give a damn about Home or not. Maybe it'll be fun? I'm not even really sure what exactly it is, let alone if it'll provide more worth to my current games.

Either way, I don't think it'll sell many more systems and thus, it's probably a waste of money for Sony.

Home is really for PS4.

Of course that is a better stance to have but it feels like an excuse here. It would be better to just release and patch before it becomes anymore of a joke. Patching an online service is to be expected anyway.

How this affects PS3 sales really depends on proper marketing. If Sony can make ads that emphasize more on an interactive, multiplayer community experience and less on dumb creepy shit, they just might do ok. It's definitely gonna be tough to compete with MS' current aggressive marketing.

use to be interested in home but as time passes i realize its rather pointless and not too important i'd rather have them working on allowing multiple people to sign on one unit or any of the other features they are lacking or just new ones that would actually impact the way i game...rather than devoting time to one that simply allows me to waste time when i could be gaming
