EA founder and mobile games advocate Trip Hawkins has today made the bold claim that Apple's trendy iPhone is causing Sony and Nintendo to "freak out." Apparently, the device's potential as a gaming platform has shaken up the two companies, who have enjoyed a relatively small handheld battleground until now.
"The iPhone is by far our most effective platform," said Hawkins, who currently runs mobile game studio Digital Chocolate. "We make as much money with these games on one device as we do putting a game on 100 different cell phone platforms. Between the iPod Touch and the iPhone, I think the platform is freaking out Sony and Nintendo.
"Apple has sold 30 million units so far and it has created tremendous awareness. It has taken ground all over the world, but it has only penetrated one half of one percent of its total market."
Hawkins is a smart man and clearly knows the mobile market. While he might be employing hyperbole when it comes to Sony and especially Nintendo, there's no denying that the iPhone is gaining significant ground as a gaming platform and could pave the way for a stronger Apple presence in the games industry over the coming years.
It seems likely that Apple will eventually establish a foothold in games some day. Then we can all be trendsters.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Ever since my mrs spent £1500+ on an I-mac only to find that 6 months later they updated the OS meaning a £100+ software update was required to run software she required for uni.
Fuck Apple. I want to use my music files however I want and I certainly don't want fucking Itunes and Quicktime raping my PC from the inside out and controlling how I use my shit.
Don't worry Sony, keep putting Monster Hunter on the PSP and you've got all of my portable console budget.
Sorry mr hawkins the I phone really hasn't broken any ground yet.
Now, if you're a recently-converted gamer by way of all the puzzle games, I imagine the iPhone's doing you wonders. Good for you, I guess! Ask your gaming friends what the DS can do for you sometime!
I would rather play my games on a DS than an iPhone. I like to feel comfortable while playing my games, thx.
Sure, there are good games amongst all the generic shovelware, but there isn't a killer app yet, even Metal Gear Solid Touch is just good...
The iPhone is what we play while we wait for something else, sure we might buy it and play their games and even like them, but in the end we'll spend more time with any other plataform...
The iPhone is not poop, but it's only for playing in the pooper!
Not only that but in the gaming mecca that is Japan they are ALL generally in the top 5 each week. That's 3 out of 5 for you mathfail people.
Plus selling truckloads of games for each of those 3 every day.
I mean how many companies have released a new generation of product and continue to see strong sales and support of their previous one? Especially when the first I-phones didn't even have fucking mobile internet! I bet those who bought an original one are properly chuffed with it, sat at home by the WiFi router. Bitch please.
Sony couldn't give a shit about the Iphone. Gamers get a PSP, kids and girls get a DSi, trendy wannabe fuckwits who know nothing about DRM or digital media get an Iphone. Fair enough, these trendy fuckwits tend to have cash to blow on shitty Iphone games, but when it comes down to it a real gamer wants more than a pretty, gimmicky, akward to play phone game.
People need to seperate the markets of Gamers and people who play the odd game on their I-fail.
Back at Sony HQ there's a minted little Jap sitting their laughing at how no-one else had the genious idea of MULTIPLE PLATFORMS. Nintendo have the home and portable versions, but 2 FUCKING HOME CONSOLES! AND a portable! All selling really well?
Sony = WIN.
Don't even get me started on errorbox - give them one option, make it cheap and at least you'll sell tonnes in the US of A. They'll buy anything cheap those Yanks.
3 words: 3 Dee OH
however, on that note, if Apple actually got something a little more smoother as far as control (other than accelerometer or placing your fingers on the actual gameplay screen), THAT'S something Nintendo/Sony/MS should worry about...ie, a controller that plugs in the bottom where the USB usually goes but doesn't make the entire unit feel flimsy...Anyone who's played Wolfenstein or iDracula on the iPhone knows the little system ain't half bad given the right control scheme
That's not to say that I don't love me some violence, I just never really felt anything great from my PSP. I just feel that there are way more games for the DS that are worth my time.
F--- a Zune! (lol)
As for the freaking out part, Sony and Nintendo is more like irritated than actually freaking out, but I'm sure Hawkins knew that already.
I'm happy playing games on my iphone. There are even some great ones within the shovelware, just like the wii or ps2.
I completely agree, but I think the number of people who don't want to carry both is pretty significant and is a big part of the reason penetration rates for handheld consoles haven't gone higher (although that's not to say they haven't been extremely successful, particularly the DS). I think the iPhone goes a little ways towards removing what was once a bit of an invisible ceiling and opening up the market a bit.
The iPhone is my primary gaming device right now. I've had my iPhone for about 2 years now and I adore it. After playing:
Hero of Sparta (God of War clone)
Cooking Mama
Wolfenstein 3D
Metal Gear Touch
Let's Golf
Sway
and other names I can't even think of dropping, I think the Lawlz are a wee bit too loud. It's not that I hate my PSP or DS, it's just that, my phone/MP3 player/video player/email-getting-thinger also has the capability of handling a decent size RPG with great graphics!
The iPhone very well could be a serious contender in the mobile gaming market. If only we could get Japan on board.
iPhone is also getting Assassin's Creed FYI: http://www.modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news/575511-assassins-creed-coming-iphone.html
/lays out flame/fanboy bait (btw, i do have a psp and ds lite too)
as for questions; yes iphone is faster than a psp or a ds/dsi.
i would be at least a little worried if i was the big N or sony; look at that app store and how many games its sold. easy money really.
but when it comes down to it; the iPhone is a different gaming platform than the psp and ds/dsi. so they prob don't have to worry too much; but don't count the iPhone out though. you never know!
I really wouldn't write the iPhone off so easily.
If anything, I see the iphone as a Trojan horse that's made its way into a fortress that's currently being fought over by Sony and Nintendo, only that they're building their soldiers one by one very slowly. It won't happen overnight, but the iphone/itouch as a gaming platform is a matter of "when" and not "if" at this point.
I'm looking at my first gen iPhone and I'm fairly sure I have an internet connection without a WiFi router in site. You fail.
Uh...the DS has tons of games for 'gamers.' I don't own a PSP, but I wouldn't mind getting one either...to write the DS off completely as being for 'kids' is just stupid.
Anyway, I really doubt Sony and Nintendo are 'freaking out' over the iPhone. Typical Apple arrogance. I'm sure the folks at Nintendo had a hearty laugh about the 'freaking out' remark before taking another bath in all of the money they're making.
Games aimed at adults just don't work with the DS crowd.
Sure some adults have them, they're a bit of fun, but they're AIMED at kids and girls. Some adults eat happy meals, doesn't mean they are designed for adults.
Don't get defensive, a DS doesn't make you a kid, or immature or anything like that, it's just not designed for you, more power to you for enjoying it. I'd say 90% of DS users are either under 16 or female. IMHO.
Trip has a point, though. I think Sony and Nintendo are indeed worried. The recent release of the DSi is proof enough, Why didn't Nintendo make the DS like that in the DS Lite? Because they were caught on the hop, not anticipating iPhone/touch possible impact.
Rumours of a PSP2 are flying around now, with a more digital download angle, possibly before the end of 09'. I think the success of iPhone/touch puts Sony at more risk than they already are with PSP. After countless chances, Sony have messed up on PSP, pointlessly chasing homebrewer coders and stopping PSP game importing, instead of focusing on the real game. They'll end up paying for it in the end.
A more open iPhone throws the gates open to all those denied PSP and DS development, for insane arbituary reasons. Even with XNA and PSN, huge submissions of profit must be made to MS and Sony. With iPhone games, you create and reap the rewards.
For this and the possibility of making my owns games with friends, I'd get an iPhone. I'd still have love for my DS and PSP though, for one simple reason, japanese import games.
Could all three co-exist, in todays market? I don't see why not, as they are all different enough from each other and what they offer. I just hope that Nintendo think more carefully when developing their next DS.
@discostar: God of War clone, Cooking Mama's on the DS too, Wolfenstein's a port. What else you got?
