Sony/Nintendo 'freaking out' over iPhone, claims Hawkins photo

EA founder and mobile games advocate Trip Hawkins has today made the bold claim that Apple's trendy iPhone is causing Sony and Nintendo to "freak out." Apparently, the device's potential as a gaming platform has shaken up the two companies, who have enjoyed a relatively small handheld battleground until now.

"The iPhone is by far our most effective platform," said Hawkins, who currently runs mobile game studio Digital Chocolate. "We make as much money with these games on one device as we do putting a game on 100 different cell phone platforms. Between the iPod Touch and the iPhone, I think the platform is freaking out Sony and Nintendo.

"Apple has sold 30 million units so far and it has created tremendous awareness. It has taken ground all over the world, but it has only penetrated one half of one percent of its total market."

Hawkins is a smart man and clearly knows the mobile market. While he might be employing hyperbole when it comes to Sony and especially Nintendo, there's no denying that the iPhone is gaining significant ground as a gaming platform and could pave the way for a stronger Apple presence in the games industry over the coming years.

It seems likely that Apple will eventually establish a foothold in games some day. Then we can all be trendsters.

Apple isn't going to penetrate my market, I avoid Apple like the plague.

Ever since my mrs spent £1500+ on an I-mac only to find that 6 months later they updated the OS meaning a £100+ software update was required to run software she required for uni.

Fuck Apple. I want to use my music files however I want and I certainly don't want fucking Itunes and Quicktime raping my PC from the inside out and controlling how I use my shit.

Don't worry Sony, keep putting Monster Hunter on the PSP and you've got all of my portable console budget.

I think sony and nintendo are laughing at that statement in their chairs made of gold.the psp is doing great(especially in japan), the ds even better, the Iphone had barely scathed the market really.

Sorry mr hawkins the I phone really hasn't broken any ground yet.

That the system's gotten the first competent Super Monkey Ball since... let's be honest, the first one, says something about just what the developers can do for the thing if they put their minds to it. But at the most, developers who've taken any time at all from the PSP and DS to satiate their curiosity seem to have gotten it out of their systems after a game or so.

Now, if you're a recently-converted gamer by way of all the puzzle games, I imagine the iPhone's doing you wonders. Good for you, I guess! Ask your gaming friends what the DS can do for you sometime!

I just got an iPhone and I'm stil in the "OOOH! SHINY!" stage and think it's awesome but...

Sure, there are good games amongst all the generic shovelware, but there isn't a killer app yet, even Metal Gear Solid Touch is just good...

The iPhone is what we play while we wait for something else, sure we might buy it and play their games and even like them, but in the end we'll spend more time with any other plataform...

The iPhone is not poop, but it's only for playing in the pooper!

People are always like "ooooh Sony hates it" / "PS3 not selling well, Sony must be worried" but does everyone forget that 3 (not 1, not 2 but fucking 3) of the top selling consoles in the World, are made by Sony?

Not only that but in the gaming mecca that is Japan they are ALL generally in the top 5 each week. That's 3 out of 5 for you mathfail people.

Plus selling truckloads of games for each of those 3 every day.

I mean how many companies have released a new generation of product and continue to see strong sales and support of their previous one? Especially when the first I-phones didn't even have fucking mobile internet! I bet those who bought an original one are properly chuffed with it, sat at home by the WiFi router. Bitch please.

Sony couldn't give a shit about the Iphone. Gamers get a PSP, kids and girls get a DSi, trendy wannabe fuckwits who know nothing about DRM or digital media get an Iphone. Fair enough, these trendy fuckwits tend to have cash to blow on shitty Iphone games, but when it comes down to it a real gamer wants more than a pretty, gimmicky, akward to play phone game.

People need to seperate the markets of Gamers and people who play the odd game on their I-fail.

Back at Sony HQ there's a minted little Jap sitting their laughing at how no-one else had the genious idea of MULTIPLE PLATFORMS. Nintendo have the home and portable versions, but 2 FUCKING HOME CONSOLES! AND a portable! All selling really well?

Sony = WIN.

Don't even get me started on errorbox - give them one option, make it cheap and at least you'll sell tonnes in the US of A. They'll buy anything cheap those Yanks.

I'm glad that I am a 30 year old kid then Chocolate, because I love my DS far more than my PSP. Good lord, I am so sick of that stupid comment being thrown out there. I'm sorry that you need to have marginally decent, dark, and bloody games to have fun.

Trip:
3 words: 3 Dee OH

however, on that note, if Apple actually got something a little more smoother as far as control (other than accelerometer or placing your fingers on the actual gameplay screen), THAT'S something Nintendo/Sony/MS should worry about...ie, a controller that plugs in the bottom where the USB usually goes but doesn't make the entire unit feel flimsy...Anyone who's played Wolfenstein or iDracula on the iPhone knows the little system ain't half bad given the right control scheme

Ah, but is the iphone as powerful as the PSP? Does it have dual screen technology like the DS? At best, the iphone is great for a quick fix on the go for those who don't like to carry both an iphone and a mobile console.

As for the freaking out part, Sony and Nintendo is more like irritated than actually freaking out, but I'm sure Hawkins knew that already.

I like it. I sincerely hope that the iphone brings down the prices for handheld games at the margin. We need some kind of check on people deciding $40 is what we need to be charged for new handheld games.

I'm happy playing games on my iphone. There are even some great ones within the shovelware, just like the wii or ps2.

Chronic Logic has hit the nail on the head with his comment "the iphone is great for a quick fix on the go for those who don't like to carry both an iphone and a mobile console." This is precisely why it will be good for the ever expanding older games market. As kids who played the original Game Boy get older, their needs change. Whereas before they had a handheld for those long family trip car rides, they're now driving the car, and can't game at the same time. For me, I don't carry around a DS or a PSP because they're too damn clunky to fit in my pocket, especially if I'm already carrying a phone. Also, the opportunity for me to play handhelds has decreased from hours at a time to maybe 15 minutes max. That is probably why Nintendo and Sony should be fearful. If they can't integrate their products into cellphone technology, particularly as cell phone power increases, they face obsolescence.

"At best, the iphone is great for a quick fix on the go for those who don't like to carry both an iphone and a mobile console."

I completely agree, but I think the number of people who don't want to carry both is pretty significant and is a big part of the reason penetration rates for handheld consoles haven't gone higher (although that's not to say they haven't been extremely successful, particularly the DS). I think the iPhone goes a little ways towards removing what was once a bit of an invisible ceiling and opening up the market a bit.

"Then we can all be trendsters." I prefer the term hipster, but it's the same annoying pretentious assholes. I stay away from Apple products mainly because (IMO, I could be wrong, however unlikely) they make popular versions of things, then act like they invented the entire damn concept.

There are very few games on the iPhone that can hold my attention for very long. They are usually very small, very simple games. Nothing wrong with that. I play them for maybe a couple minutes. The only ones I can even recall pouring any amount of time into was Trism (I am a puzzle fan) and Hero of Sparta- Which was a god of war clone. Playing through the whole thing took about 4-5 hours, pretty long for a game that costs $10.

Its great for 2£/$/€ time wasters but something more substantial? Devs are running to it to be trendy and to make a quick cash on a flash game, hell, I would make a game for it if I didn't need a mac to do so. And the phone is too fucking expensive.

I know I'll never get an iPhone or other mobile game playing Apple device. Not necessarily because I wouldn't want one, but mainly because I don't have 10 million dollars on hand (that's the lowest price of any Apple product, look it up).

Are all the LaWLz from people who don't have iPhones?

The iPhone is my primary gaming device right now. I've had my iPhone for about 2 years now and I adore it. After playing:

Hero of Sparta (God of War clone)
Cooking Mama
Wolfenstein 3D
Metal Gear Touch
Let's Golf
Sway

and other names I can't even think of dropping, I think the Lawlz are a wee bit too loud. It's not that I hate my PSP or DS, it's just that, my phone/MP3 player/video player/email-getting-thinger also has the capability of handling a decent size RPG with great graphics!

The iPhone very well could be a serious contender in the mobile gaming market. If only we could get Japan on board.

iPhone is also getting Assassin's Creed FYI: http://www.modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news/575511-assassins-creed-coming-iphone.html

why all the hate? is everyone here mad cuz they don't have full time jobs and can't afford such devices? ;)

/lays out flame/fanboy bait (btw, i do have a psp and ds lite too)

as for questions; yes iphone is faster than a psp or a ds/dsi.

i would be at least a little worried if i was the big N or sony; look at that app store and how many games its sold. easy money really.

but when it comes down to it; the iPhone is a different gaming platform than the psp and ds/dsi. so they prob don't have to worry too much; but don't count the iPhone out though. you never know!

People really need to give Apple more credit here. I may think they're a bit overpriced and adored mainly by twats, but they've got the potential to be really huge in the games industry and if I were Sony or Nintendo, I'd at least be keeping a close eye on the iPhone.

I really wouldn't write the iPhone off so easily.

Slot of my friends gfriends play games on their iPhones when we watch sports or play SF4. This is their target demographic. People who liked games like snake and solitaire. They will make good money, especially in US. But in countries where transportation is mostly public, DSlite and PSP will have no competition. N and S have nothing to fear, but we will benefit from the competition.

As much as I despise Apple (something about iphone users that claim how superior they are when their best selling app is ifart that just turns my crank), I'm also aware that the iPhone is getting some (even if it's just a little) footing in the gaming department. Sure naysayers can point out what it lacks compared to Nintendo's and Sony's offerings, but look at what it has that the other two don't: Multitouch and Accelerometer. Sure that's brought forth a lot of shovelware, but at the same time there are a few decent games that I've seen that utilize those two things for a decent product that wouldn't work well on a traditional portable.

If anything, I see the iphone as a Trojan horse that's made its way into a fortress that's currently being fought over by Sony and Nintendo, only that they're building their soldiers one by one very slowly. It won't happen overnight, but the iphone/itouch as a gaming platform is a matter of "when" and not "if" at this point.

Uh...the DS has tons of games for 'gamers.' I don't own a PSP, but I wouldn't mind getting one either...to write the DS off completely as being for 'kids' is just stupid.

Anyway, I really doubt Sony and Nintendo are 'freaking out' over the iPhone. Typical Apple arrogance. I'm sure the folks at Nintendo had a hearty laugh about the 'freaking out' remark before taking another bath in all of the money they're making.

The DS being for kids and girls was recently highlighted by the GTA Chinatown Wars Fail.

Games aimed at adults just don't work with the DS crowd.

Sure some adults have them, they're a bit of fun, but they're AIMED at kids and girls. Some adults eat happy meals, doesn't mean they are designed for adults.

Don't get defensive, a DS doesn't make you a kid, or immature or anything like that, it's just not designed for you, more power to you for enjoying it. I'd say 90% of DS users are either under 16 or female. IMHO.

Good ol' Trip Hawkins, ah the memories of 3DO.

Trip has a point, though. I think Sony and Nintendo are indeed worried. The recent release of the DSi is proof enough, Why didn't Nintendo make the DS like that in the DS Lite? Because they were caught on the hop, not anticipating iPhone/touch possible impact.

Rumours of a PSP2 are flying around now, with a more digital download angle, possibly before the end of 09'. I think the success of iPhone/touch puts Sony at more risk than they already are with PSP. After countless chances, Sony have messed up on PSP, pointlessly chasing homebrewer coders and stopping PSP game importing, instead of focusing on the real game. They'll end up paying for it in the end.

A more open iPhone throws the gates open to all those denied PSP and DS development, for insane arbituary reasons. Even with XNA and PSN, huge submissions of profit must be made to MS and Sony. With iPhone games, you create and reap the rewards.

For this and the possibility of making my owns games with friends, I'd get an iPhone. I'd still have love for my DS and PSP though, for one simple reason, japanese import games.

Could all three co-exist, in todays market? I don't see why not, as they are all different enough from each other and what they offer. I just hope that Nintendo think more carefully when developing their next DS.

For gaming on the go, the iPhone/Touch has a pretty pitiful battery life, unless you're constantly plugged in. That little baby gets kinda warm in no time and the battery takes a hit. I mean, there are some decent games on there, but I use it as a PDA, not a Gameboy.

@discostar: God of War clone, Cooking Mama's on the DS too, Wolfenstein's a port. What else you got?
