Sony needs to just STFU photo

I have earned myself a reputation as a "Sony basher" and a "PS3 hater" by people who clearly do not know the difference between the two. Contrary to popular belief, I do not hate the PlayStation 3. In fact, I love it, and at the time of writing, it is my favorite current-generation console. This could change in the future, as my favorite system is decided by what games are appealing to me at any given moment, not by which one my Mommy and Daddy just happened to get me for Christmas. Right now, the PS3 is top of my chart.

However, it is true that I bash Sony, frequently and without mercy. This is because I do love the PS3, and all I see is a company squandering a great piece of technology and mindlessly posturing instead of taking the time to examine its own faults. Sony is acting like it's king of the hill, like it's the industry leader, when it's currently holding third place.

I'm a Sony basher, but it's only because I don't hate the PS3, not because I do. The simple fact of the matter is this: Sony needs to STFU, because the constantly flapping mouths of the platform holder's PR department is the single biggest problem the PlayStation 3 has.

For the past three years, Sony has conducted itself with an arrogance and smugness that it simply doesn't deserve. We should have been clued in to just how bad Sony's mouth was going to fuck the PlayStation 3 when it dragged forth its notoriously awful 2006 E3 press conference. The one where Kaz Hirai shouted "RIIIIIDGE RACER," to a silent audience, and announced the PS3 price point of "599 US Dollars" as if he were doing the world a favor. Before the PlayStation 3 was even given life, Sony had managed to make it memorable for a series of running jokes more than anything else.

Since that time, Sony has systematically set about using words to reduce the PS3 to a laughingstock. If they're not explicitly saying something stupid, Sony executives are instead choosing to flap their gums rather than doing something practical to help the PlayStation brand regain its place as the dominant leader. Sony has bred contempt from consumers and encouraged a lack of confidence in publishers, with its recent stream of bullshit truly indicating just how out of touch with reality those in charge have become.

As you may already know, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick recently threatened to pull support from Sony if it didn't cut the price of the PS3. Now, whether or not Sony does what Activision wants is not what matters to me. I bought my PlayStation 3 last year, and I'm relatively happy with what I got for my money. It's not going to affect my life, one way or another, if the PS3 has a price drop. However, when Activision says something, you really need to listen. What you don't do is what Howard Stringer chose to do: basically laugh at the most powerful third-party publisher in the world.

"He certainly likes to make a lot of noise," was Stringer's blasé response. "I lose money on every PlayStation I make."

Let's get one thing clear right now -- Sony needs Activision more than Activision needs Sony. Activision makes a metric fuck-ton of money on the Wii, PC, Xbox 360 and DS. It could halt production of all PS3 games today and still be rolling in money tomorrow. That's not to say that Activision is prepared right now to pull support from Sony -- Activision loves money, and it still makes money from the PlayStation brand. However, why Sony feels it should further antagonize Activision, I do not know, but it makes Sony's PR department look like clueless dipshits ... as usual.

Regardless of whether or not Activision's threat is empty, it's still the world's largest third-party publisher, and you don't respond to a company that influential by essentially laughing at it and making light of its concerns. I don't like Activision as a company in the slightest, but when it talks, you need to fucking listen. Sony, however, would rather chat shit than listen to anything but the sound of its own voice. This is not going to help.

Then there's the much-lauded "ten-year cycle."

This is basically Sony's get-out clause, the same crutch it's been leaning on for the past three years. As I've stated in the past, it's very much the same excuse that certain religious folk use when they say, "God moves in mysterious ways." It's a vague and purpose-built justification for any illogical fallacy and unexplained stupidity that Sony might commit. Also, because it's based upon things that are yet to be proven real, there's no way one can argue against it. It basically allows Sony to sit back and say, "All part of the plan," while providing no legitimate reasoning or accountability.

And it's bullshit. If what Sony says is true, that means we have another seven years of PlayStation 3 to look forward to. Seven years is a long time for anybody, but in the fast-paced videogame industry, it may as well be centuries. I simply don't believe for one moment that Sony will continue to be putting all its support behind the PlayStation 3 in seven years' time. By all means, if I am wrong, you are welcome to link back to this article seven years from now and say so. There's simply no way a PS3 successor won't be out before then, and when that's out, Sony will stop supporting the PS3 to its fullest. Mark my words.

Let's play devil's advocate for a moment, however, and say it is true. What is Sony going to do when the next Microsoft and Nintendo systems are released? Is it going to once again drag its heels and release what it pretentiously calls "future technology" in the PS4, at yet another hilariously high price? Will we just get E3 2006 all over again? If Sony continues to employ the same morons that it currently has, then quite possibly so.

Then there are just the generally inane and pathetic things that Sony executives have said over the years. How about the time Kaz Hirai said that Sony was still the "official" industry leader? Sure, it sounds delusional, but he certainly backed up his claim ... by pretending that Nintendo didn't exist and ignoring Microsoft completely:

This is not meant in terms of numbers, or who's got the biggest install base, or who's selling most in any particular week or month, but I'd like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry.

***

It's difficult to talk about Nintendo, because we don't look at their console as being a competitor. They're a different world, and we operate in our world - that's the kind of way I look at things.

How about the fact that the PS3's marketing was so fucking confusing that Sony had to repeatedly issue a clarification on what the system even was? It was marketed as a Blu-ray player, a multimedia device, and a computer, and finally they realized that they should have just stuck with games console.

I could also bring up the "rumble is a last-gen feature" quote, but that's just too easy.

It's not like executives in other companies haven't said stupid things, but when it comes to grandstanding in the face of humiliation, nobody does it quite like Sony. As I said earlier this week, the firm is currently acting like an aged rock star that has long since outlived his glory years, yet still snorts coke and fucks teenagers while convincing himself he's remained cool and relevant. Sony's arrogant attitude and total denial is reaching a point of farce.

Meanwhile, mainstream press outlets label the PS3 a failure and those in charge bury their heads deeper and deeper in the dirt. What's worse is the fact that so-called fans of the PlayStation 3 continue to justify Sony's imbecility by putting their heads right down in that very same dirt. Unable to accept criticism of the company since it's a perceived slight on their favorite videogame console, they can't see just what they're doing in the long run. They see anybody with ill words for Sony as an enemy or a threat to their precious machine, unable to see that there's only one thing that will truly threaten the PS3's existence -- its own creator.

I consider myself a fan of the PlayStation 3. That's why I gladly take the opportunity to criticize Sony when it fucks things up. Anybody who loves the PS3 should be doing the same.

Sony needs to shut the fuck up and leave the PS3 alone. Cancer comes from within, not without, and right now, Sony's the biggest tumor the PlayStation brand has ever seen.

Fun article. Although a fuck-ton would be an imperial one. A metric one would be a fuck-tonne. If you're going to be a Journalist (capitalised), you need to brush up on your journals.

@Arch649 - They're kicking themselves in the foot to allow such a PR disaster to happen.

Beyond the multiplatform titles where you may prefer one style of controller to another, their exclusives appeal to a lot of people. Now, if they were to continue development on PS2 BC (sigh). Personally, I try to get all of my action games on the Playstation consoles due to controller layout, series conformity from previous generations, etc.

The PS3 is also very capable system with a load of multimedia features; it always plays center stage when I have guests over to play movies or music (using external HDD or streamed wirelessly from my computer) or browsing YouTube videos, etc.

I'm saving up for a PS3, looking forward to all the games and potential.

I'm not so much looking forward to the embarrassment I'll get when I go DToid News to playing it, though.

They have a leg to stand on, but that leg is also the leg every other company is standing on with legs to spare. Potential. They seem to be reminding us of this potential every couple days, though, which kind of pushs them down some more.

Oh, and the Penny Arcade comic: "Trust me, guyyys...We'll be good ferrit next year" is a good sum up.

I would also like to point out the theory of mine about Sony fanboys. While they don't shit theirselves with as much frequency and consistency as Microsoft and Nintendo ones, when they do...Well...Killzone 2 8/10 reviews kind of explain it for me.

Good read. I don't get why people feel that you can't make fun of something you love. Well no, not really making fun, but pointing out the negative qualities. Are we only allowed to criticize things we don't like? Pretty bland system if you ask me.

I only have a Wii this generation, but I'll freely say that I'm not impressed with the library and many games feel like they have motion controls tacked on. Not to say I hate my Wii, but I'm not sacrificing bulls to it out of reverence or anything!

Spot on, Jim. I own all three major consoles and the PS3 exclusives are above and beyond Microsoft's. I'll take Killzone 2, Uncharted, inFAMOUS, and Flower any day over Gears of War and Halo. But Sony has dropped the ball so badly in its support of third-party software by virtually ignoring the online community aspect of gaming with zero cross-game chat/invites STILL - features XBOX had at launch. This is why I buy all multi-platform games on XBOX. And it's too bad because - like almost everyone on this thread - I love the PS3.

you put up a great argument if you want to be a sony basher, but you ignore a vast number of things in your rant.
One of my main issues is that activision needs sony, not to maintain a cash flow but to maintain a dominant business model until the ps3 is COMPLETELY out of the market. No publisher will be able to have a major market share without publishing to sony because studios do not want to publish to only the xbox (I leave the wii out because usually those publishing to the wii are doing it to psp/ps2 and not 360 ps3 as they are usually downports). Remember that activision is a publisher and relies on studios to provite them with the IPs that they need to survive- if a major studio that has a contract with activision suddenly gets a letter that says btw: I know that you have been working hard and putting a lot of time and $ into your latest dev for ps3 that we contracted to publish but it is a 360 exclusive now- devs will run like mad and sue like hell. It will hurt activision not in the profits from sales but the b2b transactions.

The smugness I can't really complain about because being a bit of a tech head I have seen waaaaaay too many ballmer interviews to think of sony as smug in the console war. It is like the people that have the apple v MS argument- they are both evil empires as are MS and sony, personally I feel sony wants to have the consumer's best interest at heart but they are still too caught up in their own ideas to do it right. You could easily say the same thing about nintendo but for the fact that from the beginning they went on the cheap. Imagine if the wii had the same tech and price point of the other 2- you would be having the same argument about convoluted concepts and poor customer reading- it is just that the console debuted @ 1/2 the price and tech as the other consoles that got this huge flood of consumers to buy it so the argument has always been- yeah some things suck, but it is a cheap family game system.
so far as the 10 year cycle- I think that sony will prolly hold to it- they want to take the ps2 as a model and try to build cheaper systems ans maintain their current compatibility

Jim,
You are a moron. You can't justify ripping Sony just by saying you love their product. have you been to the Sony blog? If not, you should there's some direct communication from them there about their faults. do you really expect executives to go do the NY Times and say they are having a problem after 2 of the most successful generations you've ever seen? They have shareholders you boob (I am one). Activision needs sony way more than the other way around. look at the numbers..if sony is 25-30% of the hardware out there, they'd be fools not to support it, and you think their shareholders (I am also one) want to see a 30% drop in revenue? you clearly know nothing about business and sit back and criticize for headlines..good work on that, but you're arguement isn't backed with any fact other than that you claim to love their platform. You're followers/supporters on this topic are being led by a blind man who claims loyalty, but knows nothing about business.

RIIIIIDGE RACER!

Seriously why wouldn't Sony be proud and excited to launch the PS3 with Ridge Racer, oh yeah i know why, because every single console has launched with Ridge Racer, and it always sucks, always. Honestly isn't that how we keep track of the number of consoles released, by what the newest iteration of Ridge Racer is out. Ridge Racer is not change we can believe in.

Dear Jim,

I understand what you mean with this editorial, telling them to "stfu", though I don't see what the problem is other than a price cut. A price cut at this moment is impractical for them. Yes it will sell units, but they have to maintain a business, so they decide to keep support for a very inexpensive console (PS2) and make money there until they drop the PS2 (possibly next year..10 years) and bring PS2 BC back to PS3 via update. That along with a (pretty much confirmed) slim ps3 will sell lots of units, and at a break even point, if not more. That will push them up farther towards the top.

Personally, I agree with what some other person said here. Talking bad about Kotick isn't smart, but Kotick is a bitch. He just wants more money. The threat is empty. No doubt. Last year, if I recall statistics correctly, Sony was 47% of Activision's revenue, even excluding the PSP. It wasn't smart for that PR guy to call him out, but w/e. It's done. Everyone knows his threat is empty. Kotick won't drop support for PS3 when they have millions on upon millions of dollars to be made with that platform. Why would he, of all people, turn that money down?

Anyway, their management was really crappy in the beginning of this current console generation, that's why they went through a whole lot of management change, including kicking out the creator of the PS, Krazy Ken. He was the one, after all the main source of Sony's arrogance. I'm pretty sure he was the one that said "rumble is last gen". He had to make up a reason to say why they didn't have rumble...in which it was the Immersion lawsuit.

For a while, Sony has been doing exactly what you have just said. They have kept quiet for a long time. They don't want to mess anything up by saying the wrong things or over hyping something. So far, they have delivered a whole lot in first party titles and PS3 exclusive features.

In the end, Sony is doing the right thing. They keep being a business, pretending everything is ok, while they silently try to fix things behind the scenes. That's what companies are SUPPOSED to do. While their initial price point was ridiculous, they have given a lot of consumers an experience you can't get else where. Most of my friends have sold their 360's for a PS3. They realized it's more cost efficient for a college bound student, not to mention it is an all in one media device.

I once again understand you bash Sony because you like the PS3, hoping they will learn from their mistakes, but the matter of fact is that they understand what the problem is, they understand that they have gotten somewhat of a bad name for their PS3, and they understand they have to fix it. But they can't just wave a wand to fix things.

In my eyes, they have handled this whole debacle really well. They continue to add support for more "hardcore" gamers, media enthusiasts and even "casual" gamers. They allow 3rd party peripherals out the ass, allowing additional costs to be at a minimum instead of having proprietary items that cost an arm and a leg.

While I did say I understand that they should "stfu" and not make PR mistakes, I don't understand the main point of your rant. Was it to justify or explain to some fanboys that you do in fact like the PS3? Because that wont make a difference to them as long as you bash it. Or is it complaining about their price point? They are working on both. Up until that Sony PR guy said something about Kotick, they have been hush hush about a whole shit ton, and they have been working on price cuts behind the scenes. So what's the point?

PS: I didn't proof read this, so if there are mistakes or shit that doesn't make sense. I apologize.

But Sony just tend to fuck up everything they mess with. WTF was with Home? They made that piece of crap for what? So I can talk to other people? I can do that in a forum. That's how I feel about Home actually. A 3D forum/chat room.

I think MS need to pull their heads out of there asses too since they've started jumping on the casual bandwagon but Sony have their heads much further shoved up their asses and need to pull them out and start listening. And not in 10 years either. Now.

I don't think calling Activision's bluff was a bad move necessarily. Not a good move, either. I just don't think it'll make a lick of difference because if Activision can still make money off PS3 games, they'll still make them.

I agree with the article on the other points. But consider this: Although an aged rock star doesn't get nearly as much fame or money as he did in his salad days, many of them still have a level of recognition and fortune that we have no hopes of achieving. Yeah, you can make fun of their arrogance, but it probably won't do much if they're still laughing all the way to the bank.

Thanks for yet another great article Jim, you're my fave dtoid writer nowadays. It's been hard to understand what the hell Sony's been doing with the PS3 and I'm saying that as someone who only owns PS3 out of the current-gen consoles. :P

MS treated Wii's success by defining it out of the console race as well though so Sony wasn't alone on that point.

I do understand where they're coming from a little though. Sony has somehow gotten the idea that they can be the "quality" option of gaming consoles just like they are in the HDTV business for example. I just don't think it makes any sense at all. I do love them for all the artistic stuff coming out on PSN primarily produced by Sony Santa Monica Studios though.

I've been thinking up an article like this for a few weeks now which I've been simply too lazy to translate onto paper. Like you say, the PS3 is my favourite console at the moment too, and I think its just getting together a library of exclusive features which could make people start seeing it as a worthy purchase over the massively established Xbox 360, instead of viewing it as just "the other one." (The PS3 had been my secondary console for a long time)

Its just sad to see Sony constantly launching such bullish comments that only appeal to the nutbags and the fanboys (seriously, who is the obviously bullshit PR speak actually aimed at?!), rather than rushing in with some actual style and flair. They have a great console out there with many features worth buying it for, but they continue to make themselves a laughing stock even now.

Sony should sit back, and feel comfortable with what they actually have. Maybe then people will stop percieving them as a bunch of monkeys without a clue...

As much as this is article is focussed on Sony, and you are obviously full of raging bias-hormones, I think that Microsoft deserve the same bollocking. The only reason Xbox Live still costs £40 in the face of total opposition ( me, and my 2 friends), is because most people are stupid enough to pay for it. Sony lose money on every console they sell, and as much as they make that money back a few times over every five minutes through getting Indonesian orphans to make flatscreen TVs for a few pennies a week, Microsoft actually openly make profit and contunue to charge, doing exactly what Sony do and devaluing their own main argument towards the costs in the first place. The $over9000 profit they made from Xbox Live alone last year must be enough to waive those subscription fees until they release their next console. Moving onto Nintendo, their shameless money grabbing can be summed up in the words Wii-Fit, Wii Sports and pretty much every other game beginning with Wii. All of these experiences can be achieved in the place called outside. Game companies in general have realised that a fair amount of the vidyagames market is parents who buy these things for children without bothering about the price, and gamers who will bitch about prices but do three fifths of fuck-all about it because they want to play COD. The few exceptions like Valve who support communities and games beyond what is expected of them call up an almighty shitstorm when they do what they deserve more than anyone and try to profit from a series can't exactly set a good example for small governments like Activision who can whine at Sony all they want, you just need to look at their pricing in the UK to notice the hypocrisy. The only way this is going to end is if gamers vote with their feet, which they won't. Also, Communism.

Their handling of the PS3 is exactly why I don't own one. When I saw Kutaragi say that loyal Playstation fans will buy a PS3 whether it has games for it or not... that is when I decided that I really didn't want to support a company like that anymore.... and I was a devout Playstation follower. That's why I get irritated as well, I LOVED my Playstation 1 and 2.

I just really hate the decisions that they've made with such a capable system. The high and mighty attitude they've had, even being last in install base, is just baffling and has really tarnished the brand name for me. I waited a long time to get a PS3, saved up money, and then I got a 360 as a gift one year instead.

Sony has done nothing to make me want to get the PS3, all they've done is given me reasons to spend my money on more games for the 360. Especially since all but TWO of the games I wanted to play on the PS3 are available for the 360 as well. They need to get their shit together and clean house over there. No wonder Phil Harrison decided to leave, I don't blame him. It has to be hard to defend the company's choices like that when they are so blatantly moronic.

I wish I could articulate myself better, but I think that why some folks tend to get pissed off at Sony is because they have an investment in the PS3, and every damned thing Sony says seems to run the risk of harming its already shaky standing in the marketplace, thereby increasing the risk that said investment will be rendered worthless.

That's why people bitch. Not just because Sony says dumb shit, but because said dumb shit has such a negative effect on Sony at large. Nobody likes running the risk that something they paid good money for may not be viable somewhere down the road (in spite of that being the reality of consoles), and it pisses them off when they company that they threw their money behind seems to actively undermine itself like Sony does. They want Sony to be better because it pays off for them.

My very first comment on this site could be summed up as "I have nothing against the Playstation but Sony's PR sucks" so yeah I agree 100%. Sony sold great with the PS and PS2 (I honestly doubted that they thought that they could really outsell Nintendo in the handhelds department rather then just cause a stink and raise some cash) but when they started being outsold by the Wii... They freaked out. It took two console generations and a goofy looking remote but they lost the lead. It's like how Nintendo started acting crazy (Nintendo made a new IP *GASP!*) after the PS2 officially blew everyone's faces off.

@GoodGamer77

Yeah and Nintendo of Europe is even worse! It's as though they want us not to play games... Oh. It's in Germany. Well fuck me with a lawnmower!

ok i c wat ur sayin here same thing could be said about the 360, yes our marketing is horrible lol, but hold on a minute, u said that for the next console that sony should not be future proof and be as expensive, im sry but are u sayin we should do wat xbox did and come out earlier so we can enjoy haveing the first console out, not put as much work into a system which could be so much better, i think ur wrong there man u need to stfu, xbox is cheap pieace of plastic, they came out a year early so that they could get the sales and they did, how many rrod did people have i wonder why hmmmmmm, cuz they stopped development and just realeased it to get the money, ya thats rite i said it, and no im not a huge ps3 fanboy, ive had every console from sony, and i love they games, i love the controller big part y i dont play 360, and i dont wanna pay to play online wit my console, thats y i pay for internet, other then that i do agree with some of the points u made, but id rather see sony making better things for the gamer then make a cheap game system to just fill there wallets, so f 360 f u, f the sony mouth talkin shit, and thx for the time

This is probably the best article I've read anywhere in a while. I, too, am a fan of the PS3, and dislike all the corporate crap Sony big shots are pulling to basically run the system into the ground.

"OMFG......Jim....this article sucks ass. It would be nice to make to other articles: "Microsoft killed you by the Ring (of Death)" and "Nintendo: We love to get into shit...thats why our mascot is a plumber" wtf.....you will never learn it."

Question: How do you know I'm not considering two other articles based on the other two companies?

Sony is retarded, instead of constantly saying that "this is the year of Playstation 3" they should release a new version of the console, a slim one. With an Hdd of 60 GB, no wireless (make it an add-on, almost no one uses it anyway) and a more "terestral" look that would make the manufacturing cheaper. Tag it with a 299$ price and it would sell like hell. Also, stand up at Microsoft, you lost FF XIII, now MGS, just pay the developers some money and keep it exclusive, they still sell systems you know.

This is mainly just criticising Sony for mistakes that Sony made over 3 years ago. I would say that the writer of this blog is very unprofessional he sounds like a petulant child that has spat his dummy out.

Before anyway says it, yes I did read the article and although I agree on some points I disagree with most. Why should Sony bend over backwards and get bullied by Activision. Many of these things that the blooger writes about is so old now. Yes Sony deserves to be criticised for it's mistakes but not like this.

and btw, what about "Dan Greenawalt" and MS's arrogance?, when they say their game"Forza3" is best of the best, and best graphics and physics on any "console", and they noboady touched that when they only have 400 cars, and their game dose not even have Weather, night race, no rally, nothing just the same old forza2, and above that MR.DAN makes an article on Videogamer.com by saying GT dropped the ball and forza will pick it up. wtf?> GT5 is not even out yet, so why nobody bashes those guys? oh wait i forgot they are American companies and this site is also american, why should they bash your own, right?

Jim honestly I think you need to STFU, You post a video from fuckin 3 years ago from, let it fuckin go, the why don't you post things from last years E3 or this years E3?....When ever someone trys to bash the ps3 they go well...in 2006. I DON"T CARE that was 3 years ago. Also if you want to right an article why don't you write it on all the good qualitys of sony. Whenever microsoft, mostly Aaron Greenberg Blindly bashes the sony for no reason. Yet sony still never says anything bad about the competion and if you notice sony never directly names the competition.

and here's my little skit of Activision and Sony, Someone pushes you in the face and says he's gonna punch you, you push him back and say DO IT....he's not gonna he's just trying to be tough its just like everyone put it saber radiling. Activation makes so much money on the ps3 and to slay in the top three publishers spot they are gonna have to keep supporting the ps3 and sony knows that, Sony will cut the price but they will do it at their convenience not at others.

"no im not a huge ps3 fanboy, ive had every console from sony, and i love they games, i love the controller big part y i dont play 360"

Notice how most of the new commenters hate this article...and coincidentally have less than stellar grammar, not to mention questionable arguments.

I guess someone posted this on a Sony board on GameFAQs or NeoGAF, and the fanboys are pouring in.

This.. very well might be the worst piece of 'journalism' I've ever read on the internet, and that's saying a lot based on the amount of garbage that gets posted every day all over the world.

Though, I'm actually amazed you could actually type out that much text, what with your mouth firmly wrapped around Microsoft's cock, and your hands.. god knows where.

Someone linked this article on another site, and my first thought was.. "Destruct-who?"

And in coming here, I can see why.

What a joke.

Anyone else notice the recent influx of comments that are just balls out fucktarded? I mean...so many of them seem like they're being made on the off chance that an editor will say "Hey! That guy said something funny!" and give them shit for it. I mean, yeah this new contest thing is cool and all...but the spirit of it is to take funny comments out of context and display them for all to see. When that comment has no context originally, the spirit is gone, leaving an unfunny shell of a joke. Also, cocks.
