Sony motion wand slated for Spring 2010 photo

It's the moment we've all been waiting for. The PS3 Wiimote has a release window, as an enraptured world finally gets to experience what life with motion control can be like. The innovative, fresh approach to videogame interaction that is sure to change the way we think about gaming has been slated for a Spring 2010 release. And thank God

"We are slating it for spring of next year," states polygonal SCEA boss Kaz Hirai. "One of the things is that we just don’t want to put out the controller. We need a great software that supports the controller at launch. It’s something that we’ve been working on for the longest time."

Hirai's right, of course. Software is important. I wonder what the odds are of it launching with some sort of sports game that includes tennis, boxing, bowling and golf. Sony could even follow it up with a sequel set on a resort island. I think that would be an awesome game, because of innovation.

Hell I would probably get a wii sports-ish game on the ps3. Then I would have one less reason to own the wii.

I hope Sony does create a Wii Sports like game to launch it with. It would help ease the transition for Wii gamers. Not only that, launch 2-3 games based on being an Archer, Swordsman, and Sorcerer. Kind of like a Gauntlet Legends game. That'd be sweet.

I guess I am the only one truly curious about this.Metroid prime three showed me that motion controlls can actually be benifitial to gaming, but motion controlls have a bad rap because for every gem nintendo gets they produce 9999 mini game turds to go with it.

If sony can produce good games like MP3 on a regular basis, go for it.

God I am sick of motion control! But Natal does look better than Sony's motion controller.

Pics or they're bluffing.

I seem to recall Developers having a very difficult time getting developement kits for the Sony Wand due to an extreme shortage post E3. I can't imagine the situation doing a complete turnabout in under a month, as games take between two and three years to produce, while the developement kits for the wands were only recently released for a date only nine months away.

At the very least, there won't be any games made for the ground up for the wands, because to start from scratch requires years, not months. PS3 titles with motion controls tacked on as an afterthought or low quality PS3 titles seems like the most likely outcome.

@The Reborn: Madworld's getting ported? I missed that.

@article: I'm surprised this is coming so soon, and I'll be even more surprised if it isn't delayed. How long did it take for Home to come out, again?

I want a PS3, but not for this... I have a Wii for this! I want a PS3 for:
1.) Games
2.) Graphics
3.) Blu-Ray
Not for crappy motion ripoff. Though I admit the Controller+Camera approach is an interesting one, and it will probably work better than Natal.

In all honesty i'm a little excited for a good company to take the reigns of motion control. Having something in your hands to use, to physically hold is going to be much more pleasant than moving your hands around with nothing in them. While I think Microsoft dosen't have a good shot, I could be wrong. Microsoft fanboys usually eat up anything they throw out so I'll probably be wrong.

@GEMPadre

Why not have everything though? Games, graphics, blu-ray, and motion control. What is bad about having more options?

It's definitely a ripoff, but ripping off is what makes the games industry go round. Every cartridge-based game console ripped off the Odyssey. The difference between this motion control and Wii's motion control is that it actually functions as intended and advertised. They actually got up there and demonstrated just how precise the motion controls are, and how they would be applicable in a video game.

The motionplus is a step in the right direction for the Wii, but Nintendo's kind of shot themselves in the foot by splitting their consumers between "ones with motionplus" and "ones without motionplus". I'm sure most people that own a Wii don't even know that the motionplus peripheral exists, so I doubt Nintendo's going to make a ton of games that require it.

Sony (and Microsoft) did well in actually developing the technology to a point where it recognizes 3D movements rather than just having accelerometers that detect preset movements and a modified superscope device for a screen pointer.

Yeah i'm sure nintendo are kicking them selves in the leg with 50 million wii's sold and making the Wii brand name synonymous with motion controle.

If no one is going to support motion plus (packaged with what will probably the most popular game of this year), what makes you think they will support a motion add on for sony/microsoft half way into the console cycle?

Nintendo is a ok company. I want to see what a GOOD company can do. Sony has catered to casual and hardcore gamers. I want to see what they can do for a hardcore AAA title with motion control. I feel like it would be able to steal away some thunder from the Wii and Xbox and draw more sales.

@ ViciousBoston - you are either one of the most misguided fanboys I have ever met or a viral marketer for Sony. Even if you hate the Wii, you have to recognize the genious of the DS. There is no better gaming company than Nintendo - I say that because Sony more of an entertainment technologies company than a gaming company, and one that relies on third party support while Nintendo has been profitable for over a decade on the strength of it's first party alone.

If Nintendo can't satisfy you with satisfactory motion controls either in Metroid Prime 3 or in Wii Sports Resort, then there is no way a first party Sony game will do the job.
