Sony marketing: We came, we saw, we stole your junk photo

Sony, let me break it down for you: You have an image problem. You continually f*ck up in the gaming public's eye. I'm here. I'm available. If you need someone with common sense to help you, then I am offering my common sense services. Why am I saying this? Well, it seems that Sony can't come up with their own images for their own games. They have to steal from Microsoft and the Xbox 360! From Major Nelson:

Until they fix it, you can see that clearly the main image used on Sony’s PSP Connect site to promote the Gran Turismo HD Preview was stolen borrowed from the Xbox 360 title Project Gotham Racing 3. You can find the original PGR3 shot they used over from Bizarre Creations here.

It appears as Sony saw they were caught and quickly took it all down, but not before good ol' Major got a screenshot of the deed

I'm guess some graphics design corporation just lost a major contract.

Sony should really have some kind of in house web design and PR firm. What ever they are paying it's far to much to be embarassed like this....Over and OVER!

I wonder what ever happened to the good ole' days when Japanese business men would come to America for a presentation and cancel a multimillion dollar multi-month deal because the presentation was recorded on a competitors blank tape.

That a Mclaren F1, GT never had one. haha let look at all the stuff Sony did wrong lately. That Street art campaign for the PSP, the black white campaign for the PSP, that fake I want a PSP for Christmas campaign, They did lie various times about the ps3. Anyone remember that it would be possible to hook more than one tv to the ps3, that it would run game at 120 fps (God knows why) and the hub that isn't there that would make the ps3 the center of your network. So am I surprised that they pulling this little stunt? I sure am!

...i'm not sony's biggest fan...but i don't think they're directly responsible. as has been stated, someone in a third party design firm probably had the job and even more likely is fired at this point.

however, i will solicit flame bait when i say PGR > GT any day.

A dubious trifecta for Sony today: Price RAISED in Canada today to $699, Unreal Tournament for 360 is official now, and this PGR thing made my day.

Just wait till FF XIII, DMC 4, MGS 4, Kingdom hearts 2, and Tekken 6 "jump in", then most exclusives will be on our side of the pond.

It's your own fault Sony.

I love how everybody immediately says "OMG!SNOY SUX AZZ!!! HAAHAHAHA!!"

Do you seriously think some Executive somewhere actually DECIDED to steal a PGR shot?
As someone who works in the design/web industry, I can tell you it's probably some college intern in front of a crappy company-provided Dell who works for a crappy Web services company contracted along with 30 other crappy companies to do this remedial stuff for about $10/hr. And now he/she's out of a job (good, idiot should know better), and maybe the company's contract with Sony might suffer or end.
Phil Harrison didn't command PGR be used for GT.
Anybody believes this has mental problems.

Orcist: The fact that they have adopted Unreal Engine 3 points to Squeenix 360 happening. And remember that unnamed Square video a long time ago of prototype footage at X05, was a partnership announcement that has only seen a FF XI port so far... People forgot about that. Squeenix MMO on 360.

Ok, guys we had our laughs, but is time to sip on the coffee and calm ourselves down.

Im pretty sure theres not an exec memo from sony which reads:

"Dear Sony employees:

I've sadly noticed We haven't got enough crap thrown at us... -this week- so in order to fix that, I suggest we post an image from our competitors game in a small webpage as our own! that will get their heads turning and the poo flingin! Sony Forever!

Love
Kaz Hirai

p.s. Riiiiidge Racer!"

Ok, guys, that did not happened. Never has and never will.

p.s. Orcist: The unreal engine also works in PS3, they already had Unreal Tournament 2007 in development before the xbox 360 version remember? So Square buying or using the U3 engine means _squat_ Maybe square is going to the xbox 360, maybe they are just realeasing crappy ports like our own FFXI (which is a MMORPG) Is all possible.

And there lies the spin.

Point is, Sony SHOULD be calling in every fucknut that takes a dime from them, put a huge fecking axe on the table and promise to cleave their heads in two if they screw up like..<cue slide show of Sony PR screw ups>

The Execs may not be directly responsible for the slip up but its their jobs to ensure the company doesn't look stupid by hiring competent and accountable people. That's where the blame lies in this continuing saga.

This isn't the fault of some design company. The client provides artwork and it gets checked and double checked from the colors to the typefaces used, all according to a style sheet that both parties have. Maybe the artwork wasn't in yet, something thats very common. So they used that picture as temporary replacement than forgot about it. But its always the client fault they decide or a site is ready to go online or not. the client can see updates made to the site. It save to say that nobody at Sony responsible for this site plays Gran Turismo and I can't really blame them for that.

I love Crud's "It's always the client's fault..."
I wish it were so.

ps. hello? Azrael, I didn't say anything about any Unreal engine. What about my feelings?
twesterm's Avatar

It doesn't matter if this is directly Sony's fault or not, it's still just plain horrible press for them. Nobody will care that some person who didn't know anybody used the wrong image, they only know that Sony had a picture up for the wrong game, their own game, on their website.
