Sony man tried to make God of War an FPS photo

Can you imagine Kratos as a gun-wielding space marine? It could have happened. SCEA art director Ken Fieldman in fact tried to make it happen, confessing that he once unsuccessfully lobbied for God of War to become a first-person-shooter. Can you believe that?

"I tried unsuccessfully to convince [GoW Director] Stig to make ‘God of War III’ a first-person shooter," he explains. "Kratos could have some truly badass huge weapons that rip Gods to shreds. Unfortunately he didn’t see the genius in the idea."

I'm glad Stig didn't. We have enough FPS games out there, and God of War ended up being one of the greatest videogames of the last generation. Would you have been interested in GoW as an FPS, or are you glad to be dispensing the wrath of the Gods in a third-person perspective?

Controlling the blades of chaos from a first person perspective would have been pretty badass. I'm happy with it the way it is, but we really do need more first person beat 'em ups.

I don't know I can see Kratos entering the modern era, he is after all a god. Sort of like Bayonette except with Kratos. There's some possibilities there. Though I don't know about an FPS.

I can see the logic of trying to convince the director of the first God of War about doing a FPS... But trying to convince the director of the third iteration of a well known franchise to completely change the genre is really stupid.

I guess if by lobbied you mean "threw the idea out there once and got shot down".

Certainly it would be ridiculous to make the whole game first-person, but I suppose I could potentially see a very brief section of the game being in first-person. Even that would be a stretch without a very compelling reason for it to happen, though.

A first person beat-em maybe, but he clearly said FPS.

What the hell would Kratos shoot? And why would you completely change the genre of a game in the 3rd entry in the series? This comment boggles my mind.

Silly Fieldman, he should have pitched it as an RPG instead.

The FPS type stuff is what spin-offs are made for, but generally not the primary entries.

Still, I don't think it's a good idea to make an FPS. It's a really flooded market already with few consistent sellers.

@ Mace

As a rule a game should be varied and difficult enough to have replayability, but the gameplay should be simple and consistent enough that even a young child has no trouble understanding it. That is the success of 2D Mario. Unfortunately, these rules are too often forgotten.

...Wow...seriously Sony, dont let this guy pitch in ideas for new IPs or how to make a game better. Whats next? Little Big Planet combined with Guitar Hero controllers to design levels?...sorry high blood pressure.

The statement "to make 'God of War III' a first-person shooter" implies that this man was so inept to suggest that an iteration of the series should become a FPS.. I don't know about anyone else, but that has me doubting the sanity of Art Directors.

Then again, I might be reading into that wrong.

It worked for Fallout 3, I suppose (not IMO though). The first person perspective in games is so much more restricted than in real life that I seriously can't understand the draw or why people think it's more realistic. FFS, your standard FPS character has no neck and his eyes are fixed forward in the socket and he has little-to-none peripheral vision. How is this realism?

If I never had to hear anything about it and it's 3 years worth of hype and news and fanboys ranting and so on etc. and they just suddenly said 'Hey! We made a God Of War FPS, wanna play it?' I'd say 'FUCK YEAH!'

God of War FPS?

EPIC FAIL!

GoW is the best hack-and-slash game out there, no need to trash it by making it an FPS.

I might be be interested in a GoW RPG though, as long as it's not a part of the numbered GoW series.
