Can you imagine Kratos as a gun-wielding space marine? It could have happened. SCEA art director Ken Fieldman in fact tried to make it happen, confessing that he once unsuccessfully lobbied for God of War to become a first-person-shooter. Can you believe that?
"I tried unsuccessfully to convince [GoW Director] Stig to make ‘God of War III’ a first-person shooter," he explains. "Kratos could have some truly badass huge weapons that rip Gods to shreds. Unfortunately he didn’t see the genius in the idea."
I'm glad Stig didn't. We have enough FPS games out there, and God of War ended up being one of the greatest videogames of the last generation. Would you have been interested in GoW as an FPS, or are you glad to be dispensing the wrath of the Gods in a third-person perspective?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
unless by genius he means "complete fucking poison"
What the hell would Kratos shoot? And why would you completely change the genre of a game in the 3rd entry in the series? This comment boggles my mind.
Still, I don't think it's a good idea to make an FPS. It's a really flooded market already with few consistent sellers.
@ Mace
As a rule a game should be varied and difficult enough to have replayability, but the gameplay should be simple and consistent enough that even a young child has no trouble understanding it. That is the success of 2D Mario. Unfortunately, these rules are too often forgotten.
Then again, I might be reading into that wrong.
But I'm sure it was just a joke. You don't mess with greatness.
I would have been so sad, there's no way I would have bought GoW III.
Every other game on the market is a shooter, why turn GoW into another boring game?
Gears of war ...
EPIC FAIL!
GoW is the best hack-and-slash game out there, no need to trash it by making it an FPS.
I might be be interested in a GoW RPG though, as long as it's not a part of the numbered GoW series.
