The ancient saga of PS3 cross-game chat has a new chapter today, with a man from Sony almost confirming it, before being shut down. The bean-spiller is PSN product manager James Thorpe, responding to fan demand on the PlayStation Blog after the latest Firmware details failed to mention any cross-game chat.
"I wish I could just give you a date, I really do," Thorpe told the howling fans. "Trust me when I say that as soon as I hear from 'up top' I will be shouting about it and making myself the most popular person on the blog. I hope, like you all do, that its sooner rather than later."
It seems, however, that Sony did not want us to read what Thorpe had written, and has since removed his post. Of course, the Internet never forgets, and his post was immortalized on Kotaku. Silly Sony, you can't keep secrets from us!
It's amazing how cross-game chat still hasn't appeared on the PS3. I thought the PS3 did "everything," Sony. Apparently it doesn't do that quite yet.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
LOL.
Eh...screw it.
(though this issue could also be resolved with a better quality inspection process where games with flaky voice chat aren't released).
I think it'd be awesome if they did this with PSP too. 3000 and Go both have mics, right?
I know that there have been times where i've got a few friends online and were in different games. Sometimes its cool to visit with a friend while your playing something. Not a make or break feature, but more options is always better than less.
a mate of mine has a PS3 and a 360 just like me, and we use the 360 for voicechat while on the PS3, which is a bit of a waste :p
The part that astounds me is Sony is so blind they dont realise that they could adapt Skype for PSP to be a app that runs on in-game XMB and thry'd A) have product placement and B) cu out half the work
This.
Which, if you're playing a PS3, is completely understandable, because A) They don't come with Mics, so not everyone has one... and B) You don't have any Cross game chat.
Going from a 360 to a PS3 is like taking a big step backwards in the social aspect of gaming.
One of the great aspects of 360 is if you're playing a something and a bunch of your buddies are playing some other stuff and you're trying to set up a game of MW2 later so ya'll can meet up, you take 5 seconds, open up your guide, hit x on each of their names which invites them to a party.
Bam, they're all there, you can talk, set up some games and laugh and belittle your buddy for prematurely ejaculating in the hooker you tricked into banging you all for free.
It's just good times, and I know it's something the PS3 needs. As it is, I and all of my PS3 friends do what one of the other dudes up there mentioned... We use our 360's for chat while we play on the PS3.
So, right now, the only way to get a good chat system with the PS3 is to own a 360. You don't see that in the commercials though.. :)
This.
I want to play Far Cry 2, my friend wants to play CoD4 on Veteran, we both want to talk to each other so I dont get bored driving around and he doesn't get bored with cheap deaths.
Right now our only option is to get on our 360s TO TALK WHILE PLAYING PS3... this is fucking horseshit
Seriously, I won't mind this at all, but I think priorities need to be sorted out.
For the thousands of people who view gaming as a social form of entertainment, it's very important. Just a couple weeks ago I signed on to play some CoD4, to see a bunch of friends from home online. I signed on and was able to catch up with them while playing. It is pretty important, and it seems to me that *some* PS3 users are ignoring the demand for this so as not to recognize a blight on their beloved system.
Come on other ps3 owners go buy a mic.
Maybe if Sony would start bundling the 250gb with a mic.ore people would realize that it can take a mic.
