Sony Worldwide Studios senior vice president Scott Rohde says that they've learned a few lessons from the PSP. He admits that the company dropped the ball in supporting the PSP with games, and promises that things will be much different for the Vita. So, for those worried that there will be a dry spell after this abundant launch, Rohde says that they've "got a lot more in the works."
"I think that there were too many droughts of killer titles [for PSP]. There were too many long droughts, and I think we recognized that," Rohde told Gamasutra. "And we've put a serious investment into our long-term PS Vita plans, so there's a lot of stuff in the works."
It sounds like Rohde considers the PSP a lesson for the future: "I think what was special about PSP in relation to Sony was it was the first time that Sony, as a company, was trying to support two platforms at once. So that, by its very nature, made that launch a little bit rocky. We still did okay. We got some good games out the door."
"This time around, we started planning for development of [Vita] about three years ago, in terms of developing for the software, and how we were going to be able to transition."

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I don't think what he is saying here is false (at least I don't see any reason to believe that the Vita will be lacking in support.), but it has been hard for me to believe anything they say for a long time now and here recently they just keep adding fuel to that fire.
I'd be more worried about record breaking sales for your competition, and flat Japanese Vita sales in a region you typically sold very well in in the past driving away support. Sony doesn't get to dictate the ebb and flow of third party support, that's where my worry would be.
Also, man who would have thought Sony would ever be worried about having a game drought. If you had told me something like that in 1999, I probably would have laughed into your face, spraying bits of Honey Nut Cheerios everywhere. How times change.
I don't see the Vita outright flopping either, however full reservations aren't neccesarily indicitive of actual sales numbers or potential sales down the line.
If I remember correctly, pre orders had sold out in Japan as well before launch.
thats not really an exclusive, it's a remake of the original tactics ogre on the SNES
Which is another reason the psp sold more
I know. Just an observation that suprised me. I finally caved and preordered one yesterday. I was turned away by one GameStop and the last available reservation at the other. With all the doom and gloom talk I was just a bit suprised:) I'm a big fan of the 3ds, but feel Nintendo missed an opportunity leaving off a second analog. The circle pad pro works, but god it's ugly:)
is not weak first party support regardless of how we all feal about the wuality.........
@doom.
It is an exclusive enhanced port. The best version of the game that people were willing to buy
Just my thoughts on how to value this kind of PR talk.
@OneRed
I agree, I never in my life would of considered the possibility of a game drought. These days of huge budget games has killed the games of yore I use to love. No longer is it worth attempting to release a niche title as the people want big. The PC thankfully allows for a greater degree of budget.
My Iowan upbringing rules again.
I am waiting a Nitto get the vita as I feel there will be a revision in the near future, by there's already 5 games I want for the thing, so the vita isn't hurting in games either.
I'd like to see games coming out at a steady pace rather than just having a summer of no releases, then everything drops in the holiday season. Or we could have both. I'm still waiting to see if Sony can sell me on the PlayStation Vita, because I was a little disheartened to buy it for a few reasons.
Though to be fair the Vita doesn't even launch until tomorrow so I'm sure we'll hear about more games on it eventually.
So if 25 Titles are the launch day titles.........on Gamestop's list there are only 14 Total titles (though it says there are 68 total games...but counting them from 2/22 on there are only 14).
I am wary of the PSV due to its high price of adoption and poor japanese sales and large # of console ports rather than original titles.
I am guessing we will have to wait until E3 to get a realistic idea of how many games are really being released for the Vita this year because if Gamestop's list is to be trusted....I'd be VERY worried.
Its something the console sector needs to learn to do too.. Feb-March everything gets released, then 0ct-december -then people complain theres nothing in the middle (summer) months. Doesn't need to be like this at all.
Sony won't be held liable for the things they say and let's face it they haven't been doing exactly well in Japan(where they usually/always do).
Consumers should never be lured by the developers to buy a system for just one or two titles they really want at launch it just doesn't make sense logically or financially.
Maybe this is why I was never an early adopter when it comes to new systems.
Besides, there is a high possibility of price cuts happening even before the game you are interested in is released.
There is very little pros to being an early adopter. You pay more for a less refined system.
The day psp launched I had more gamesnfor it than I had for ds since its launch. In a year I had.more psp games than I had for ps2.
That's a good point you know, PSP support was really very good before the PS3 launched. Not that it was as terrible as people say after, but it wasn't as good as it had been.
