Sony: LittleBigPlanet recall an act of respect photo

Putting rest to informed theories that they were scared of getting a right royal terroristing, Sony has claimed that the notorious LittleBigPlanet delay was out of respect. The long-awaited PS3 exclusive was recalled after one of the backing tracks was discovered to contain words from the Qur'an, and released this week.

Sony Computer Entertainment UK managing director Ray Maguire explained the recall, claiming it was the "right move" before admitting it was "disruptive in terms of marketing plans and getting things sorted."

"I just think it's about respect. We weren't to know that a product (the track removed from the soundtrack) that's been in the marketplace since 2006 by a Grammy award-winning artist would have this kind of effect," stated Maguire. "But I don't want to see anyone upset by something that we've done and we have to put it right so we did put it right. I think it was the right move."

While some gamers have railed at both Sony and Muslims for the recall, one can't really be too hard on the situation. Sure, it was incredibly silly, but I can understand why Sony would want to be careful. LBP is incredibly important to Sony so they can hardly be blamed for wanting to make it as smooth a launch as possible ...

... Even if that particular goal has been thoroughly scuppered.

Obvious news is obvious.

In my case, it's more like an act of a lost sale. After spending part of a day searching for the game, I finally found a copy at a local Sears store.

Gleefully, I walked up to the counter, only to be told that they had no intentions of selling me the copy that I brought to the counter.

My interest in the game suddenly went down to zero. Maybe I'll buy it later...maybe I won't.

The launch was a disaster. They should have just released it and offered an apology. Since you can buy the song on itunes I don't see the problem.

I played it for the first time at Eurogamer Expo... nothing would change me wanted this game. I had so much fun with it. Yeah, I'm plugging my under-read blog!

Oh, my point: Fair do's to Sony. This game is way too cute to be tarnished.

@gameboi

But was your only ability to invest time in the game focused on being able to find the game THAT day? I mean I found it the 21st completely by accident and they DID sell it to me, but it wasn't a make or break thing.

If your interest level dropped so rapidly in that one instance, did you really have any real interest in playing it beforehand?

I can certainly empathize with the "gotta have it now!" syndrome, but I usually don't stick too much of that burning desire behind games I'm not holding a burning passion to play.

Somewhat. Much hype was given to the game, and I loved my short experience with the beta. However, I'm stunned that it's suddenly an issue to remove the song, after the game hit the streets.

Since I only speak English, I never would have know what the heck was being said, anyway. That's if I even too the time to listen to the lyrics. The game looked fun, and I just wanted to play it.

Just another case of political correctness getting out of hand. If this was such an issue, the folks at Sony should have never entertained the thought of putting it in the game to begin with. They wasted my time.

no wonder they can't find Osama, when half of the population is obliged to dress as black ghosts. He's not in a cave, he's cross-dressing! I'm beginning to think that that costume has less to do with faith and more with guerrilla tactics.

I still feel like it was a bad move on Sony's part. I seriously don't think they would have pulled the game if any other group of people claimed to be "offended.

If they respected it, they would have left it in instead of treating words from their holiest document as being radioactive.

The ninjas in the picture surely thank Sony for removing any connection with this hype monster.

LBP = overhype. Sony = desperate. Sackboy = the bastar brother, very brown Elmo.

Thing is though, ultimatlely, SCE just would not have been able to tell if the group of female Muslim game testers were annoyed or not...

I just hope a Muslim takes the game, and makes a level about Muslims protesting about the game, but enjoys making the level... that would be perfection.

Well we must please everyone now. Cause you don't want to offed anyone now. So I guess there going to recall all the RE5 games now because they shot black people in there. There going to have all the black people pink now so it don't offend people.

Ah 0bshaky, where would the internet be without trolls. Hating on something popular doesn't make you cool anymore FYI.

I understand why Sony and MM took it out, I get it. However the person or people that are offended by it need to realize something, this goes double for Sony and MM too. The freedom given to people to worship whatever God/religion they want is the same freedom given to those who wish to express their creativity as long as you are not physically harming anyone by those beliefs. You can't have one and not the other, and your beliefs don't superceed mine and vice versa.

In all honesty, I dont care why they did it anymore. I have my copy, and that's all that matters.

Bah, so now its offensive to simply quote the Koran? Why is the West letting intolerant religious fanatics abridge our freedom of speech?

@ Doktor - Because we'd rather not get blown up. Frankly, I think the compromise of free speech is a dastardly crime. As is the demonization of anyone who takes the extra steps to learn about Islam and jihadist fundamentality from an academic standpoint. Oh, you got a minor in muslim studies? You spent a quarter in Saudi Arabia? Good luck getting hired, terrorist.

I just hate it that a bunch of goddamed cavemen are able to chill speech in the freest country in the world.

Honestly, I hadn't heard anything about this until the news of the recall. I would be willing to bet it would have gone completely unnoticed if Sony would have just let it.

So....presumably the decision to leave Resistance in its original state was an act of total disrespect?

Fail - why can't they just admit that they let the terrorists win?

first of all i read the article and i didn't read anywhere where it said muslims requested the song to be removed. I think its a shame that they did. us muslim game players (and believe me-theres a lot of us) certainly wouldn't protest at somthing like that. the only ones who would complain would be the extremeist while their snorting cocaine off a strippers back.
