Sony kinda sorta, not really denies 80GB PS3 is coming photo

Because of an FCC filing that was recently leaked out that pointed to Sony's own "elite" PlayStation 3, the company has already come out and denied that such an action means a new PS3 is coming out ... at this time. In only the vague way Sony can, all they could say was basically no "new product announcement at this time." Oh come on, just tell us. We already know! From Next-Gen:

"As mentioned when we made the product announcement for PS3, the system will have different configurations (thus, 60GB HDD with memory card slots and Wi-Fi and 20GB HDD without memory card slots or Wi-Fi both exist)," wrote a Sony PR rep in an e-mail to Next-Gen. "Application to the FCC has been made with various possibilities in mind, however, it does not lead to a new product announcement at this time."

On March 2, Sony filed an FCC "Class II Permissive Change" request regarding the PS3's Bluetooth module. The documentation mentions the addition of an 80GB PS3 model, complete with model number.

Considering it will come out, I'd be willing to bet that when it does it will cost the same as the 60GB version now and the other two console configurations will drop in price. I'd even go so far as to say the 20GB version will be phased out within a year or two.

agreed, the 20gb will go away sooner rather than later... it's just not enough space in the long run

"go so far as to say the 20GB version will be phased out within a year or two."

I'd say they're trying already. I haven't seen one in the store ever. I don't know if they sell first since they're 100$ less or if they're really not available to retailers . Perhaps retailers don't want them? What's the markup difference?

Sony said retailers in the UK didn't want the 20GB version.

Yeah I don't think 20gigs exist anymore. Who the hell bought one anyway? The chrome trim on the 60gig is so worth the extra $100.

Is that why the "Elite" costs 80$ more? I hear it has chrome trim.

I agree that the 20GB model will disappear, but perhaps this 80GB version won't be released. Keep in mind that companies regularly submit documentation for products that don't end up getting released. Nintendo's Bit Generations GBA games was all set to be released, complete with ESRB ratings, yet wasn't released. Maybe Sony has bigger hard drives in store.

pretty pointless if its just the hard drive because you can upgrade that freely anyway.

the 20 gb version was pointless for us :P

80gig is not allot lol (not a bigger difference from 60g).

if PS3 is aiming for 10 year mark, it better get with the program and get 100gigs+ or give us the option to change the HD ourselfs and just give the PS3 something to automaticly DL its OS.

(wouldnt b bad spending 50$ on a 300gig HD @ newegg :P)

Good luck finding a 20gb model TODAY. I looked all over town yesterday and was only able to find one (which I bought).

Are they trying to top Microsoft with the "Worst Kept Secret In Gaming" too? I'm not sure why they bother...as soon as production begins on new hardware, of course it gets leaked! :P

80GB isnt actually much of a step over 60GB they should jsut go all out and do the 120GB

at least i didnt have to wait for hours in lines to get either the 360 or ps3. all this new hardware bs would probably push me over the edge if i was one of the few who waited hours/days in line to get a system. either way, i feel pretty crapped on none-the-less for spendin the dough just to get shown up a year and a half later.

Wow... I bet all those 60 Gigers out there will feel cheated, now!

So, what exactly are people putting on these drives? Installed game content? Shouldn't consoles cache stuff as they load it rather than copy several GB to the drive before you start playing?
