Sony Japan needs radical restructuring, may happen after CES photo

George R.R. Martin constructed a world in which a massive ice wall protected the majority of civilization from the evils of the northern borderlands. In the third book of his incomplete series, the reader gets a glimpse of the possibility of the Wall failing and see an unlikely hero's rise.

Anytime I read anything about the economy, I visualize it as the Wall – a seemingly impenetrable thing that can weaken and fail if not defended or treated properly. According to a report by The Times, Sony Japan will be going through a restructuring as a result of the Wall’s widening cracks. In other words, the economy sucks and Sony needs to change.

Some analysts are warning that the “expected” restructuring will be radical and focused on major divisions and their management. One analyst is saying that Sony needs to push their content earning as opposed to their manufacturing. Sony president Sir Howard Stringer is being called upon to be Sony’s Jon Snow and usher in the changes forcibly or face the possibility of widening achievement gaps and billion dollar losses.

The majority of this is being reported as fact, as Sony is expected to announce a restructuring after CES. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I wonder if they'll start charging for online play like MS. It's a revenue stream their competitor is getting already so why not try charging people (maybe at a discount).

@pandicg - That is an excellent idea. I would like to see a bit of an overhaul beforehand, though. XMB is a little ugly.

Really all they need to do is fire a few upper management people and their entire marketing department. I'm talking the whole fucking thing. Maybe not the guys who did the Motorstorm commercial and that one commercial with the song by Saliva, but everyone else has to go. And they should probably put a hit out on whoever did the PSP squirrels commercial.

Sony's restructuring should begin by canning their entire marketing department. In my opinion the main reason the PS3 is so far behind 360 and the Wii is due to mis-marketing the system. Just about every PS3 commercial from the very start has been stupid and doesnt even talk about the gaming platform itself, and then every commercial since then talks about everything that comes with the PS3 except the fact that it PLAYS VIDEOGAMES. They need to stop advertising it as a movie downloading machine or a bluray player and start advertising the PS3 as a video game console! Its worked for the 360 and Wii, heck the Wii wont stop talking about how its a video game system even though it has crappy games.

The Playstation 3 does have great games for it, the problem is nobody knows these games exist because they are never shown off.

I agree their commercials are very odd and way to Japanese for anyone outside of the country to understand.

Sony's marketing campaign is getting reamed by Microsoft. EVERY multiplatform game I've seen a commercial for it has the familiar 360 logo followed by the 'Xbox 360 now starting at 199' tag. Sony's presence in general consumer media is practically non-existant, and it's a shame because the PS3 is such a great machine.

@parrothead:
I don't think they're too Japanese, I think they're just too fucking retarded.

@pandlcg: That would be a huge mistake. PSN being free is one of the advantages of a PS3, Sony would be foolish to charge for it.

But in any case, I think Sony know more about what it needs to do to it's own business than an out of the loop analyst.

@mistic: In case you haven't been paying attention, European banks are just as much to blame as US banks.

Kudos for actually using Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series as an analogy. So, does this mean the PS3 are the Lannisters, with the 360 the Starks and the Wii being the Targaryens.

Wasn't it just a year or two ago that Singer was restructuring Sony just to get them where they are now. Bad economy or no it seems like he hasn't really planned for worst-case scenarios.

The analogy was slightly painful, since A Dance with Dragons still isn't out yet ><
But I found it to be an apt analogy nonetheless.

Sony restructuring may be just what they need to actually start making some common sense decisions, at least when it comes to their gaming division.
