Sony Japan is testing a 'new game machine' photo

It seems like every other week there is a new rumor about an upcoming Sony portable. The PSP2? Who knows. It seems like they are always killed by a lack of hard evidence and usually a stupid-looking concept header image (like the one above).

This time around, though, speculation is supported by a new help wanted at over at Sony Japan. According to Gamespot, they're looking for someone to evaulate a "new game machine" that is "part of the PlayStation or PSP series and their peripherals."

And there's more:

The job listing goes on to state that, if accepted, evaluator/assessor applicants will "will be part of an advisory staff which will play PlayStation series software on this new machine and check its functionality. They will also be able to "test game machines not yet released or new functionality of PS3 peripherals before they are released."

It's been too long of a day for me to be creative and speculate on what this could be. I'm just hoping its a real PSP2 and not another PSP rehash.

What do you hope this will be? Two analog sticks? Please!

As long as the home App's are still workable, I'm interested in this!

two joysticks, and please don't make it as expensive as a bar of gold.

That stupid looking header image is kind of neat. with solidgoomba however, in that the analog sticks would be in a bad spot. minor redesign please and make it a touch screen.

Oh, it's probably just the PSP 4000.

I dont want to see a next generation of handhelds yet, I'd prefer they waited until they can actually come out with something worth upgrading to.

I hope this new machine is the PSP 4000, hopefully with a new "flip-over" design similar to the DS and GBA SP. I'd also like it cheaper, with a better screen, longer battery life, and shorter loading times. If they can do that, then I'll buy a PSP.

As long as it can be not modded like the original PSP, I'll be first in line to buy one.

I mean look at PSP games like Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep or Resistance: Retribution. Those look better than most Wii or PS2 games.

Basically, a new PSP would be really amazing even if you're just thinking of technical capabilities. Although I don't think there's stuff they can still do with the original.

Also, I want to see a brand new DS blow me away before a new PSP does.

naturally they'd have to keep researching new ideas or improvements. they can't start working on a new console or portable a few months before it comes out.

You guys really think the concept art above looks that obscure and uncomfortable? Um, take a look at the Nintendo DS. Now THAT'S uncomfortable. I sold my PSP 3000 due to a lack of games. If Sony develops a PSP with a screen like the one shown above, I would be willing to pay $300, maybe even $350. I mean, imagine playing a Ratchet and Clank or even Jak and Daxter port on a sweet screen like that.

@White

I agree, the DS lite is a bitch for hand cramps. Which is why I only use it for ds games, I like my gba micro which I play more than my ds. My psp on the other hand I had to get one of those handle attachments which makes it feel like your holding a ps2 controller, plus it adds 10 hours of battery life to your psp. Sure its bulky as hell now but its not like the psp ever fit in your pocket to begin with.

I'll buy it. Like every other Sony console ever made. Except for the Net Yaroze and that fancy PSX (not talking about the PS1 or PSone here) because they're damn expensive.

I agree that there needs to be analog sticks on the new iteration of the PSP, but they need to improve it over the first PSP's. I always felt like I was slowly tearing the analog stick from whatever it was connected to...

I am all for 2 analog stick, but I always find it funny that people get so up in arms about it since the DS has no analog stick

@whor

That's because the DS makes up for not having an analog stick by having a touch screen.

I actually love the image above, I think it's exactly the kind of portability and sleak-ness I'd be looking for in a new PSP.

Whoever designed that wins.

The smart move for Sony at this point would be to differentiate. The world is missing something that's the size of a book, with a tablet-like setup (think Kindle), but with a lot more features (namely, games). But, keep the book-reading, allow it to read Kindle files... I'd buy 10. Nintendo killed the competition by not competing, and building a new need; Sony has the opportunity to make something that's more portable and beter on batteries than a laptop, but sitll powerful and, more importantly, more interactiable, and, still more important, MORE LEGIBLE. If I worked there I'd be a goddamn millionaire about now.

solidgoomba:
"All I have to say is that concept art would be a pain to use in reality with those analog sticks where they are, I can feel the hand cramps already."

Not to mention that extruded lip on the bottom cutting into your hands.

I cant wait to see how this will cause new physical problems. The Wii screwed up our elbows and now out hands are at the fate of Sony. I see the PSP being used at out facility Narconon Vista Bay and they get more love than the DS. I can only hope they make them better in round two. Most Drug and alcohol addicted people have a limited patience for pain.
