Sony is out to get anything PS3 jailbreak related photo

Of course Sony isn't pleased with the rapidly growing jailbreaking scene for their PlayStation 3 console. They're showing that they mean business lately, though: Sony is even out to find the sites related to the jailbreaking PS3 scene.

At PSX-Scene they've acquired court documents that detail what Sony's legal team is up to, and it seems that they're out to get sites that are even hosting tutorials on jailbreaking. They're keeping tabs not only on PSJailbreak, but also PSGroove, PSFreedom, and OpenPSJailbreak.

It seems that Sony is aiming for takedowns, judging by the host of documents that PSX-Scene has shared with the public. (The juicy bits are marked "exhibit.") They've already got a judge to force Yahoo! to hand over info on a guy that's related to the site shippsjailbreak.com. They tied it to the mail-drop box this person rented to handle the web site's business.

They say not to be surprised to see sites coming offline in the next few days.

Wow this isn't cool. The Internet is a unregulated land. As I should be.

Fuck. Are we part of a generation of cowboys and pirates in the glory days of the wild webs?!?!

I don't mind Sony keeping tabs on those sites, but anything beyond that is unacceptable. Posting tutorials is not illegal as long as they do not contain copyrighted material. However, a lot of the sites are run by lone enthusiasts that don't have the time or resources to battle Sony's strongarm litigation. They may be forced to close their sites even though they are doing nothing wrong.

Also, fuck Sony. These tactics make me WANT to steal your games.

Good luck with that Sony.

Considering you can download free software to program off the shelf USB chips and there's nothing illegal about that, at least in the US.

Installing backup manager is, though.

Would love to see Sony sue their own customer base. That's been a tactic that's worked for the RIAA (lol)

@sqlrob - Since when did Nintendo create the R4, or Sony the JailBreak? If I was referring to hardware, I would probably reference the companies that create the piracy hardware.

What I meant by "Sony Does What Nintendon't" was Sony is already a million times more gung-ho about going after this piracy hardware than Nintendo. How long has the Jailbreak been in production? A couple months? Jesus, the R4 has been around for years, and you can still buy them and find ROMs to this day.

If it slows down the rise of cheaters in online games on psn, I am all for this. That is what this will lead to eventually. Piracy sucks too.

I guess its easy to see who the pirates are whenever a topic like this comes up.

How dare Sony protect their interests!! I should be able to steal games as much as I want just like I do on the PC, 360, and the Wii! If they keep trying to stop me from stealing, Ill just try harder to steal from them!

What troubles me the most is the use, not the existence. It wouldn't be bad if they used the PS3 as a computer (with new Other OS), or mod it to personalize the looks. THEY PIRATE GAMES. "We bought the console, we can do whatever we want!". YEAH, PROBLEM IS THAT THEY DIDN'T BUY THE GAMES. Cheating is also bad, since it goes against the policy of the company. Really, I hate jailbreakers, but I hate even more jailbreakers that justify their acts by saying that they bought the console so "it's up to them to use it".

installing backup manager is not illegal, nor is the hardware and software. you have to have the original disc i order to copy the game, you can't just download a 4+gig game file from the internet and it'll work, you have to have the disc! and thats not illegal or all those companies that released a no-cd patch to play a pc game are illegal in giving us that option.

and as long as the devs patch this software, it betters the console and sony can't do a legal thing about it as long as they do that. that is the law or every 3rd party app you downloaded to your pc is illegal.

sony is a fascist company and we're seeing how fuct up they can be. i payed over $600 for my launch ps3, no man let alone some jap company will tell me what i can or can't do with what i paid for, and if i don't own it then sony can come break into my house and steal it from me.

sony has no case against the end user, they took other os away from us, and now we are working hard on getting it back. i still have yellow dog on my unformatted hdd and aim to be able to get back into it soon. its great for learning code.

They're just bluffing, Apple's attempt to foil jailbreakers through the legal system resulted in jailbreaking being declared legal in the courts.

One could use a jailbroken iDevice to download cracked games for free, but there are also many practical uses that are completely legit.

Sony should just embrace it at this point, a vibrant hacking community could be seen as vital part of a devices community.

If they go after the people who created PSGroove, I will never touch a Sony product again, including blu-ray.

They released a version that could not be used by pirates. It wasn't until it was hacked by others that Backup Manager could be used at all using their software...

Once you factor in R&D cost, legal cost for patents and/or licensing, production and sales, this is a far cheaper and practical route. Personally, I enjoy jailbroken/modded hardware to tweak settings, adjust performance and just personalize my systems, but pirates and cheaters have really taken over the scene and given it a bad image.

People have missed a couple of gems to come out of the scene since it all kicked off though.

One of the big ones with being able to load firmware off of USB was some guy that added Hebrew support for the XMB/web browser.

Just a small correction, you can download games and use them with the backup manager. You do not need the original disc.

Hell, with the Hermes hex, you don't even need a blu-ray drive in the console. Perfect for those needn't backup of legit bought games because their drive died.

and i mean, sony needs to keep trying man, not because a lot of people supports jailbrake, it means its right. if you dont like the terms of use of the ps3 console/device you are using, sell it.

its good to see sony keep trying, not like nintendo did, they dont try too hard. or they dont care.

anyway, i dont want to see piracy taking over the ps3.

It sucks that jailbreaking enables piracy, but the openness is important. If I buy a toy I want to play with it how I want (eg. homebrew). No matter what the toy I can't use it to commit crimes(piracy), but I should be able to use it however I want. That's why I was happy that sony had the other OS. It would give geeks a chance to play with a cell processor on the cheap, maybe get some XBMC going, and would keep the incredibly smart people from helping pirates, since they wouldn't have to jailbreak the thing in the first place.

oh yeah sony isnt trying to stop piracy, sony is trying to take over the internet!! dont be stupid.

you think that the hackers that did it, didnt wanted all this whole "piracy shit" to happen, maybe they didnt want to. but if they didnt want to, why the fuck they did it? by making a jailbrake they opened a whole lot of windows for other hackers to use their "good jailbrake" and make iso loaders and all that shit, because dont tell me they didnt knew that would happen.

this shows that the hackers behind all this dont care for what other people may do with their tools.and you saying that even if sony tries to stop this, they cant win, they dont have a chance? you retarded. what kind of mentality you have? you think jailbrake and piracy is for freedom!!

you think that the hackers behind the jailbrake did it for love? fuck off.

Should the manufacturers of cars be held accountable for crimes involving their cars? Should the manufacturers of lockpick kits be held accountable for people using them to illegally enter premises?

i have been called out as a pirate time and time again and you know what? i fucking am. except i don't pirate console games, and i don't play pc games. i pirate movies i don't know if i'll like, so yeah, i'm a pirate in that area. and i'm guilty of pirating photoshop which i've used once.

i support the industry by buying new games with my money, pirating games for me destroys the satisfaction i aim for and lessens/cheapens my total experience.

i have some standards. lol.

movies are only 2-3 hours of my time and i delete them after watching, but if i like the movie i'll buy it for all the extra scenes and commentary and such.

i'm against console piracy but whatever you do in your own home is your business, not sonys, not governments and certainly not mine.

the number one feature i want back is other os, because i actually used it weekly. second is a task manager i can see how much cpu/processing power i'm using while playing a psn game or listening to music. and maybe that saturn emulator so i can play panzer dragoon saga again, because you will never fucking find that game for less then $200 and i have the original discs and my saturn died over 12 years ago.

but also, gran turismo5 is worth updating.

Take one from Microsoft sony. Ban the console from your online service if it is modified. The people who get cauget will whine that they can't use your service and most likely go buy another console and either take their chances by modifying it again or buy their games. Courts are so expensive and can attract a lot of bad press when a corporate giant shuts down a bunch of tiny sites with a few thousand page views a week. Hit the end user in his wallet.
