I would disagree on the 3DS not having a price problem tho they probably could have gotten away with it if their launch lineup hadn't sucked as hard as it did.
And this doesn't really change anything with its AAA titles but it does guarantee a steady flow of iOS type games will be available for the Vita. That is by no means a bad thing.
Cool beans, Sony usually gives a lot of support to smaller devs.
As someone who isnt into heldhelds im happy that MS dont have their own handheld as they woule do the same as Sony and ninty and shoved smaller games onto their handhelds
Or they are just being assholes. Probably I we will never know for sure.
@man
I'm not so sure, Nintendo has the upper hand here, there system is $80 cheaper, has stereoscopic 3D, and by the time the Vita release it's going to have alot of good games on it. It's too soon to count Nintendo out, I hope the Vita does well against the 3DS, no reason why we can't have 2 great portable systems.
Microsoft and Valve are doing a lot more for indie studios like SuperGiant Games (Bastion) - even WiiWare is more conducive to the indie developer, with possibly the lowest barriers of entry in terms of developing costs. Sony is the last person on the list to be the indie champion, so consider me skeptical.
According to Icon Games (follow the link), Nintendo is a bear to work with compared to Sony. Nintendo requires a certain number of sales before you even get paid.
Right. Because Payday: The Heist is coming their way. And Flower, Flow, Journey, Okobu and Papo & Yo and so on are coming to those services as well.
Everyone has their exclusives. So what if Sony didn't want SMB? So they made a mistake. Who the fuck cares? No company is perfect. It's just funny how you and others continue to rail against them by cherry picking games.
We get it Mag. You don't like Sony. It's getting sad at this point. Not Sofik bad. But it's getting really damn close.
Right - but how often do those Sony games come out? Maybe a few times a year?
Microsoft supports Indie Developers monthly.
Let's see what's coming to XBLA roughly in a month's period:
Bastion - From Dust - Ms. Splosion Man, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet - Fruit Ninja Kinect - Toy Soldiers: Cold War - all exclusive games, sans From Dust and Bastion on PC (but not consoles).
And on the PSN?
Dead Block (on XBLA two weeks earlier) - Fast Draw (on the Wii, and other platforms) - Deadliest Warrior (on XBLA for about a year now) - Section 8 Prejudice (about 3 months after XBLA).
That's it. That's all that's currently planned for the PSN roughly for mid-July/mid-August. Games that Microsoft already had locked up (some for about a year), and zero exclusives.
While I'm not saying Sony doesn't "ever" support Indie Games, I still think they're the worst platform for it, outside of maybe Nintendo. I loved buying Pixel Junk Shooter, but what about the other three weeks of the month? I'm definitely not cherry picking here. In fact, you can *pick* any given month, in the past year, and their indie/PSN offerings will be abysmal when you compare them to Microsoft or Valve.
I want to like Sony - I really do. I think they hit a huge stride for a while, and were outperforming Microsoft - it's just lately, they've hit a snag, completely forgot about PSOne classics, and have an abysmal PSN lineup. The Sony disappointment is not unfounded - I'd just like to see what magical games you're playing from the PSN.
With all these press releases lately saying how much they love the indie market, I'd like to see that it's more than just hot air meant to appease investors.
Missing out on Super Meat Boy was a big loss for PSN, but I don't get why they'd have to ask Sony to self-publish their game. There's plenty of worthless shit on PSN, probably all with a standard distribution deal.
I bet Team Meat went with Xbox because they only had one programmer and Sony has less users. It's misleading for Edmund to not state the full details of their decision.
As far as the article itself goes, I really believe Sony needs to have the Vita mimic smart-phones in any way possible, including all the smart-phone games and as many non-gaming apps as possible. The more things it does, the more that $250 looks worthwhile to people.
at least Sony is really trying to help support the indie devs better than they may have been. While xbox will have more downloadable games this year, ps3 has more retail games coming/released this year.
You beat me to the punch, yo.
@Magnalon
I think you're making an assumption. Because small developers chose Xbox Live doesn't mean it's because Sony doesn't support them, it's because they'll likely make more money developing for Microsoft. The Xbox has a much larger installed base in the west, which means more sales. Which company would you try first? Blaming Sony for that would be akin to blaming Microsoft because developers in Japan chose to develop for Sony or Nintendo.
As far as the retail lineup goes - Sony is gold. I love their support for retail releases, and I think the PS3 has probably been the strongest console in terms of fresh, disc based content.
The PSP had a ton of retail UMD support as well - they just skimped on the PSN front, which is one of the many reasons the Go failed - there are barely any digital games to buy, at a terrible price.
And yea, I'm looking forward to more unique content on the PSN - at least I hope. I don't *want* Sony to fail - they've just been talking up a mad game recently, and haven't really showed their hand yet. I hope the early Vita digital market is fresh as well, seeing as I'm buying it day one.
Honestly sony hasn't done anything to help indie developers out the way microsoft has by giving out the tools free to all indie developers, yeah it costs a 100 dollars to have your game put on xbox live and tested but how much does sony charge to do the same thing?
I just feel like this is a bad article because tony ponce is comparing a company that has already said they will not work with indie developers to a company that has done nothing to promote indie games.
If you want to write an article about who does more for indie game developers lets compare companies that actually do what they can to help indie developers, don't get me wrong microsoft does some crap with the indie games that bugs me because when they change layout of the dash board they seemed to have move indie games to a neglected area that no one could find.
This is the second time we hear a confirmation for Sony support from small Devs in Vita projects.
Back in april, European dev team reported a similar story
http://blooberteam.com/
"Obviously, it’s quite a tremendous honour to be included in the initial launch title for such an impressive piece of new hardware as the NGP,” said Piotr Babieno, President of the Bloober Team. “SCEE has been extremely interested in our title since we first showed it off, and have been more than accommodating in getting us everything we need to make a great game. The NGP is a truly revolutionary piece of tech and being one of the first to develop with it has been both a tremendous joy and privilege.”

I just hope that they take their Android platform seriously and open up the PS Vita to downloadables I can get on either it or my phone (or both). Being able to play an app/mini on both devices would be fantastic (and some apps really need physical keyboards to work optimally).
remember when sony gone above and beyond to help out indies on psp and started selling those indie games for 10$ a piece despite the fact that they were free or 1$ on everything else?
with all the recent moves it seems were getting another PSP, all signs are here:
powerful system that is extremely expensive to develop for,
sony's constant talking how there WILL be games,
selling it as console experience on a handheld,
flooding the system with console-like games and forgetting pick up & play games AGAIN,
flooding the PSV game library with games with ridiculously high development costs(like Uncharted, Killzone etc.) without diversifying the library with traditional handheld games AGAIN(which killed original PSP),
etc.
it will end up just like PSP - first 12-18 months will see many high profile console-like(mostly ports) and it will end up dead because developers of smaller less graphically-demanding titles(2d titles, typical pick up & play games) won't be interested in PSV simply because there won't be audience for their games. instead they will be all over 3DS and iphone/ipod.
making some lousy and overpriced iphone ports won't change a thing - it will alienate typical handheld audience even more because those games still will be just ports.
I mean after you and jimmyx, don't you think making 360 players looks stupider and stupider is counter-productive for Xbox fanboys?
Declaring it another PSP is basically saying it will be everything i want it to be...
You sold me on it with just those words thanks!
