Sony is a dirty Wikipedia troll, edits Halo 3 article, loves online vandalism photo

It's not just Electronic Arts getting in on the Wikipedia editing shenanigans, it seems. One of our top  tipsters, Action Bastard, has informed us of a certain edit on Halo 3's Wikipedia page informing us, in biased glory, that the game will not look any better than its prequel Halo 2. While such childish trolling is hardly news on the Internet, the fact that Sony itself seems to be the purveyor of the immature mudslinging should be cause for a raised eyebrow and condescending snicker.

The IP address for the recent edit is 217.18.23.2, an IP that just so happens to belong to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in Liverpool, UK. Naughty naughty. Checking out the IP's history on Wikipedia, we see a few other instances where SCEE has shown its maturity and sensibility. Because they are funny, I have contained them after the jump. In the meantime, remember that the Internet has WikiScanner now, Sony, and any company that wants to indulge in this kind of infantile behaviour will be caught and made to look like a bunch of incompetent boobs.

Great investigative work for those who found that the IP address leads back to Sony. If you are going to wrongfully edit Wikipedia, at least be as tasteful as Stephen Colbert!

@Rainbowblack
I think from Jeff Bell's reaction to his criticism on the internet we can say that higher ups in companies do this stuff too, not just mailroom clerks.

In sony's defense, Microsoft has been editing all the Lair reviews and saying that controls are horrible and the game is a dissapointment, wait what.... oh aparently no one has tampered with the reviews, apparently Lair just sucks.

Well, to be fair, Mr. "PS3 Attitude" might be a bit biased with his somewhat obsessive replies in this thread trying to clear Sony's name.

Check the link in the article going to N4G. It's from a credible source, not just my tipster. If we were suckered, a good few people have been.

Anyone who says, especially before even playing the game, that Halo 3 looks no better than Halo 2, is a fucking idiot. FACT. Proven by our top scientists. Anyone who says, after playing the game, that Halo 3 looks no better than Halo 2, will probably also be a fucking idiot. SOON-TO-BE-FACT. We have our top scientists on it.

I blame the British in general.

Also, imagine how much of this goes on from companies and IP ranges outside of the companies. There's probably an entire PR micro-industry for Wikipedia editing. Marketing reps for a giant corporation aren't stupid enough to do this in-house.

Wikipedia, for all its anal-retentive moderators, is becoming a marketing machine for anything currently sold. They ought to limit pages to historical fact - limiting its relevance in the process, but also cutting way, way down on companies abusing the site.

I can't even imagine how many man-hours obsessive Wikipedia mods have wasted in their pursuit of deleting good articles, deleting bad articles, reverting everything, and generally trying in vain to maintain control over the beast. It's like an ancient Greek punishment or something. They keep pushing that boulder up the hill... forever.

Excellent. It's been too long since Sony has done something to remind me why nobody likes them any more.

I kinda agree.. I played the beta and wasn't blown away by the graphics.. It's still better then Halo 2 but it could look nicer..

People, Lets remember that the Halo 3 BETA was a BETA. BETA!! As in, unfinished. An unfinished version of multiplayer, no less. I personally couldn't give a nugget about Halo 3, but I expect the final version graphics to be better than the beta, especally considering Bungie have said that they would be.

I normally don't post here but I have to correct some errors.

Saying that Halo 3 is just Halo 2 with slightly better graphics is pure ignorance. If you played Halo 2 extensively (sorry a level 20 in matchmaking doesn't mean extensive), you would have noticed the gaping flaws in the system. The SMG was a horrible starting weapon, melee attacks were game-breaking, the shotgun was incredibly underpowered, button glitching made the BXR the end all weapon, super jumping in a game was undetectable by Bungie as cheating due to the physics engine, and the ridiculous auto-aim is pathetic. The carbine was only good if you had host advantage; it had way too much spread when you were off-host.

Halo 3 is much more different and makes up for the flaws of Halo 2's MP. No longer do you need host advantage for the shotgun to be a viable weapon. Your starting weapon is now the Assault Rifle from H1, which has been significantly improved to the point that it can give you a fighting chance against other weapons with more power and range (something the SMG DID NOT give you). The Carbine is more accurate now. Auto-aim has been removed completely. The Sniper Rifle is bolt-action now, thus requiring more skill instead of just spamming your shots. Dual-wielding is now viable again. Button glitching is out of the game completely at the moment and any possible glitches will not be nearly as important in gameplay thanks to the reduced speed of button imputs. Melee attacks weren't reduced in power but because nearly every weapon has increased in close-range power melee attacks aren't as important as they were in Halo 2. The rocket launcher's splash damage has been significantly reduced. The needler is finally a viable close weapon after being a joke for six years.

The change from the SMG to the Assault Rifle as the default starting weapon is a massive gameplay change. Bungie themselves has even admitted they made a huge mistake with the SMG in Halo 2 as a default weapon as dual-wielding it goes against two of the major laws of the Halo universe: melees and grenades. The SMG was ridiculously flawed as a starting weapon. Anyone that even briefly played Halo 2 knows that the weapon is incredibly weak. The gun is so weak that your best bet with it is to pray you can get in melee range and spam the B button to kill someone and take their superior weapon or hope for a good grenade throw. Now, how are you suppose to stand a chance against someone with, say, a Battle Rifle? A good player with a BR will almost never let you get within melee range and if you DO get in melee range, they could BXR you and kill you before you can kill them. Rockets vs SMG? No chance. Sniper Rifle? They'll pick you off. Sword? Just let them kill you so you can respawn faster. Even if they miss the lunge, the sword swings faster than any other melee weapon in the game. SMG vs Dual Wield? Better hope you can get a grenade or melee in. When one team took control of the power weapons (which would NOT respawn until dropped) and it was SMG start, that was almost the end of the match. I can handle losing a game because someone outplayed me but I can't handle losing the match because Bungie gave me a paper-pellet shooter and expected me to use that to fight someone with Battle Rifle/Sword.

The retooled H3 Assault Rifle fixes almost all of the previously listed problems the SMG generated. The Assault Rifle gives you a fighting chance against most weapons. You aren't going to beat every single Battle Rifle or Carbine you see (that would just cry imbalanced) but at least you stand a chance against them. That alone is a huge change from Halo 2 and winning games won't just boil down to lol power weapons.

Halo 3 quite honestly plays more like Halo 1 than a Halo 2.5.

Sony is becoming nothing more than the king of unfounded arrogance. I loved my PS2 and thought that the PS3 would be pimp. Instead it's little more than a reasonably priced Bluray player, which could very well end up being obsolete in a year or two. Lair is arguably their biggest title since Resistance, and I'll confirm that it is TERRIBLE. This company makes me angrier by the day and I'm proud to say that next Friday I will gladly be spending my hard earned money on an Elite and a preorder for Halo3.

Oh and #6, combined Halo sales(1,2,3) don't even come close to the greatest selling games of alltime. Not by a longshot. Pretty sure more copies of Super Mario Bros. were sold than entire Xbox systems.
