Sony interview: "We are still winners!" *tear*

2:06 AM on 07.10.2007, William Haley 61 comments

     FAIL
This video with SCEA president Jack Tretton pretty much encompasses everything that is wrong with Sony this generation. It's like everyone knows the PS3 bombed, and they simply won't admit that things could have gone a little better. I suppose admitting you were wrong is like admitting you were wrong, but I think Microsoft has proved a little humility goes a LONG way with gamers.

Enjoy, or, you know... don't, if you invested in Sony stock this year.

I often wonder if Sonys dick is so far down Jacks throat he farts cum bubbles. It's a wonder they don't teach him to talk around it.

Sure, he's paid to be a corporate stooge, but there are times its like he's trying to convince us the flames coming out of the Hindenburg are a next generation fire production system.

Cant wait for the hardware failures that will inevitably come.

The honest answer is Jack Tretton won't give an honest answer to any legitimate, critical questions. Own up dude, the PS3 hasn't been doing as well as Sony would have liked. Then talk about what you'll be doing to change that in the future. That's all you have to do, not spew the same old marketing bullshit spin.

Ten year life cycle my ass. No console has a ten year life span. The PlayStation 2 was released in October 2000. I doubt it will see any support past this year. That's seven years. By this guy's reasoning, the PlayStation 2 is viable another three years from now. The original PlayStation may have enjoyed a long production run (note: that's just how long Sony was making the things), but quite frankly, that will not happen with the PS2.

You want to know how long this generation will last? Until the first competitor releases their new system. Then give a year for the other two companies to finalize development and push out their systems.

Sony keeps mentioning how successful the PlayStation 2 was, like that matters at all with the PlayStation 3. Nintendo was king until Sega released the Genesis which was put Nintendo in second place until the Saturn got its ass kicked by the PlayStation. I won't even mention the poor Dreamcast, or how Atari screwed up every business decision they ever made. Who was in the lead last generation has no bearing on the current generation, video game history tells us that much.

"MOOOOM LOOK! The PS3 is $100 cheaper!! Can you please buy me one?"
"Shut up and pay your Wii... And let me know when you are done cause I want to play bowling."

Damn that reporter was truly informed!! When he pointed the losses Sony was having I was looking at Trettons neck and see if he was going *GULP!* on that one!! Good his ass was tight enough to give the "WE ARE WIN!" talk back.

Still $499 dont justify the PS3 right now. In maybe a year is plausible. But right now? Nah. Inflation is a bitch and $399 is the sacred price point for at least 5 more years.

Mr. Tretton tosses out at the end that the PS3 is still dominant. No, Mr. Tretton, your hardware is not dominant and until you can further drop the price and offer GAMES PEOPLE WANT, Sony will continue to lose piles of cash on your product.

I want only the best for Sony. Not a fanboy, I own a 360 and a Wii, but Sony put out some absolutely incredible games on the PS2, and the demise of Sony would kill that library.

Then again, maybe Sony could go Sega's route and just sell software for other consoles. It seems to be going fairly well for them, if we go ahead and forget Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 360.

Huh. I guess that's why I'm not President of my company. I just can't spin things as eloquently as others. Good night, funnyman.

oh no when will the games come?!

you people and your continued begging of games. we know that they have a slate of games coming in the fall. in the mean time, the sky continues to fall.

from a marketing standpoint, they have nothing to fess up to. it is not in their best interest to admit that their launch was not the bee's knees. no corporation would admit that -- because it wasn't a failure -- it just didn't meet expectations of many.

before the microsoft PR thing comes up, that was MS covering their ass to avoid a class-action which would probably have cost less than a billion in the immediate settlement but would have cost a lot of customers than what they're bleeding right now.

And when Nintendo releases an even more powerful completely backwards compatible Wii in a couple of years, I'm sure Sony will be sitting on top since it's only half way into its product's ten year life cycle...right?

Not a PS3 fan by any means, but I think he handled himself rather well. He was getting slammed in that interview and he did a pretty respectable job spinning it the best that he could.

That said, I'm certainly not dropping a dime on a PS3.

Here is what the reporter should have said-

"But the PS2 only did so well because it cost the same as the other guys, offered DVD movie playback which was what everyone wanted at the time, and had at least a few good games! The PS3 has the Blu-Rays, and that's it! What you gonna do to step up on this one?"

To which the Sony guy would reply-

"Well, we are going to release a $200 PS3 with 512mb flash disk space, a motion sensing/laser pointer controller, no Blu-Ray movie playback, and at least five good games. We will due this immediately".

Then he'd dissapear in a ninja smoke bomb.

I would have personally paid for three $1000 hookers for the Sony guy, sent by private jet, if he had done so.

But as it stands, he was just like "Dur... we are teh rox with domination...durrrr..."

I just want Sony to admit they made a huge mistake by bundling in the Blu-ray drive. If only they took Microsoft's add-on strategy I'm sure Sony would still be on top. Oh well, I win either way since I have both consoles!

@tkyy

reminds me of 599 US DOLLARS 599 US DOLLARS 599 US DOLLARS, but i guess that's not really valid anymore.

back on topic though, it's not just humility that goes a long way--it's realism. maybe if these execs would quit talking like they live in a fantasy world where "in last place" means "dominating", gamers would actually respect their opinions.

i can't emphasize enough how much blu-ray inclusion wasn't a mistake. yes it probably tacked on an extra two hundred to the base price but then again, it wasn't the specifically the gaming market sony as a whole was aiming for. they know the ps3 will sell even if the rate of sales aren't what they were expecting. but let's take a gander of the potential of future movie sales on HD.

the united states congress is in part to blame for sony even including a blu-ray drive into their machines -- all broadcasts will convert to HD broadcast standards.

now that means that all major hardware manufacturers will see an uptake of HDTVs. all content providers will have to deliver their content on HD media. that is why we have hd-dvd and blu-ray.

if you didn't know, the most lucrative aspect of next-gen dvds are the royalties from individual discs sold as well as every machine built.

sony, aside from a hardware provider, is also a content provider. it is in their vested interest to include the blu-ray into the ps3 knowing full well that it was a foot (albeit a massive foot) in door to the HD market. they sell HDTVs AND next gen DVD. how would it make sense to not include the blu-ray?

i wouldn't feel too bad about toshiba if they lose the dvd war -- they still co-developed the cell processor and makes money off of the ps3 regardless of which medium is adopted by the masses.

He seems to get straight to the point.. last year around this time he was all about sony and Xbox Grpahics and saying how this is the future of gaming .. Till he got a Wiimote in his hand and his whole story started to change.. but he still kept things respectable .. He seems to be very up to date with the video game Industry... Maybe he is a OLd school gamer.. He did a great job...

but really where is the fine line between feeling confident in your product and possibly lying? i think he is just doing his job supporting what provides him with a paycheck. could anyone put yourself in his shoes? what if you bosses told you to go out and do that at his salary? i think sometimes people don't take the tougher questions into consideration.
