Sony: Home to be 'essential' for all PS3 games photo

If you close your eyes and get everybody to be quiet, you can almost hear my soul dying a little bit. That's because Sony has stated that its eventual goal for PlayStation Home is to make the horribly dull poor man's Second Life an "essential component" of the PS3 experience. Excuse me while I am sick into a little bag.

"Home is the starting point for PlayStation 3 online, and that's something that gamers are going to expect as more games support Game Launch from within Home," promises SCEE's Peter Edward. "This will become an essential component for all PS3 games."

Edwards states that Home is not going anywhere soon, stating that the company is "in it for the long-term." He also boasts 7 million users of the service worldwide. 6 million virtual items have also been downloading, leading me to believe that the world is full of incredibly bored people.

I really hope Sony's horrific vision of an essential Home never comes to light. So far, the best thing I can say about Home is the fact that I can delete it from my PS3's hard drive and forget it exists. I do so love playing the PS3, but I'll be damned if I have to boot up the game's slow and rubbish boredom simulator in order to get in a quick round of Killzone 2.

Yes, the best thing to come out of this pedofilia wonderland is the fact that you can delete it.

Honestly what we're they thinking!?!??! When i think of my PS3, the only thing i'm ashamed of is HOME, Sigh, i wish we could have the cool Xbox360 online avatar thing...

I think you have it backwards. Using Home won't be required, but including the option will be. The essential component is adding the game launching, not launching the games from there.

AKA they want to expose their users to more ads before they even make it into a game.

See, if MS used the avatars to make a similar thing, it'd be fairly interesting if they kept the basic appearance of the avatars and bleeded it out into the landscape. Wouldn't be worth it, but it'd be bearable.

Meanwhile, Real Life + Realistic Life when it acts as a "Look at me I look a bit like this maybe and spent real money on these socks when I could have spent it on getting a game or even just spent the time playing some game" simulator = Failure on all fronts.

It could be worse, they could make it mandatory that you log into Home to get updated stuff or other things.

Holo crap this is amazingly stupid. Home is nothing but a dumbed down second life, I dont want avatars, unless they let me make one that actually looks like me (fat guy), I wont give in.

I still hold out hope that Sony will make HOME worth reinstalling on my PS3... but that hope diminishes by the millisecond.

So far, I had won (for free) a Dan costume and a reaper costume (infamous) on home... And didn't even get in there to check it.
Maybe that is that from were the 6 million download comes?

I'm pretty sure Trev got it right. Essential option meaning ability to launch a game from within Home, not to navigate through home to launch a game.

I think this might be a little bit overblown - basic OS features are required on every console. For example, 360 games must support standard interfaces for gamer profile login, achievements, invites. If I am reading correctly, this is just a matter of Sony adding the launch from home as a requirement.

Hopefully they don't turn this into a required interface for the enduser. There's a reason we use menus instead of second life to get around in the system, they are quick and convey a lot of information.

The biggest problem for me with Home is that it was boring and no fun UNLESS you were griefing. I looked around, did completely random shit, terrorized a few people, and thought, "okay, I'm done with that"

If Home actually served a GAMING function and wasn't merely a "social space" then I would be pleased with it. In order to do this though, they need perpetual spaces and not "instances".
I would have no problem with Home if I could avoid the pseudo-bars and pick up spaces and go directly to say a "Destructoid" space that was perpetual and used a simple password system for entry (rather than the clubhouse system of restricted memberships). I could see who was there, decide on a game, party up and launch into a game where we would remain together as a party. Such spaces would also be useful if they had game night calendars, leaderboards... anything actually related to games and gaming.

It seems that some people regard Home as a game... they seem to be there constantly and not actually out buying new games and playing "real" games. If Sony wants to actually profit then they have to make Home into a gaming function and not a social 2nd life rip off.

Eh... my thoughts anyway. I hope they do overhaul it... and make it useful.

I don't always agree with Jim's posts, but in this case, he could not be more correct. Home sucks and to hamstring the PS3 with it is a recipe for disaster. I will play my PS3 less and get all multiplatform games for the 360 if this happens.

Home could be cool but it isn't. At least, I think it's quite useless right. I also think Trev is right and Elsa made me think this could work out really well. As long as it's optional I don't care.

What I want to know is who are these 7 million users? I can't think of anything I'd want to do less with my valuable videogaming time than log into Home.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Sony has been saying the complete opposite. They know it's not for everyone, they're not going to make it a requirement.

"the world is full of incredibly bored people", I thought I'd read "stupid" instead of "bored", as that's your usual take on the subject. Did someone you dearly love bought something from home? Just wondering!

I guess I count as one of the 7 million people, since I logged on once and have never been back you can't say that I actually use the boring ass thing.

"...I can delete it from my PS3's hard drive and forget it exists."

Howz? You mean I can actually get rid of that stupid icon under the Network section of the XMB? Or are you talking about some install data that fills up the HD when you launch it? I've never launched the thing, so I'm not sure.
I sure would love to get rid of that icon...

Love Sony, hate home. It's pointless. I wish they would just end it and focus that energy, money, and time on something else. I thought it was fun for about an hour or two when I got into the beta last year. That's about it...

I;m still holding out hope that they can make something worthwhile out of Home. I think the Hamster Dance-off was a step in the right direction, but most of the time there's simply nothing to do on there. I mean, you can chat with people or play a crappy little game, but nothing worthwhile. Also, if they're going to charge you for things like clothing and furniture, those things need to have more of a purpose than simply existing.

How is home a "poor man's second life" when second life is free and ps3 is the "expensive" console on the market? If you don't like home, don't use it, simple as that.
