i consider myself a sony fanboy!!! i have engaged in a a fair share of console flame wars, and lost some good friends along the way!!! but thing that has happened with sony is unforgivable!!! for me its the equivalent of the US government giving the enemy a list of all secret agents names and location in a result of sloppy security!!!!

Just to clarify, a class action lawsuit means it involves a lot of people. So she isn't suing for $1 billion for herself, she's suing for that amount to be divided between everyone who tags along with the case (hundreds probably, maybe thousands).

But yeah, even if it's divided 1000 ways, $1 billion is a lot of money... not to mention the lawyers will get a nice little percentage of it.

... unless the credit card information is actually used, I think it's going to be difficult to prove any actual losses or injury. The product is not defective, and the PSN agreement we all "accept" allows for the online system to be down.

Sony has also yet to make clear their compensation for anyone who paid for a PSPlus membership and could potentially show losses associated with this - in fact I believe Sony has already offered to extend existing memberships to cover the time lost... so again losses may be difficult to prove.

I'm not really sure what people hope to gain by launching a class action law suit... aside from costing Sony a lot more money which in turn somehow gets passed on to us gamers in some manner or other.

they are right in the fact that Sony did things half-assed, but I'm not even sure they have a case unless the client had their identity stolen or something like that. If I was Sony I'd be more worried about government agencies debating on whether or not they wanted to throw the book at me.

This kind of thing is such a waste of everyone's time and money. I am not sure how it works in Canada, but in the US this sort of bullshit could easily end up costing the taxpayers money. It already is here because Congress is involved which I really cannot believe. They care more about the PSN than they do the food supply that allows tons of tainted meat and GMO crops to poison us all. Politicians (like this) and lawyers (like this) are as low as it gets.

What's stupid is to assume that any transaction you make online will be 100% safe and secure. EVERYONE who makes a financial transaction online knows that there is at least some risk to their personal information. It goes without saying. It also goes without saying that NO SYSTEM will EVER be 100% safe and secure. Clever hackers and/or crackers will ALWAYS find a way through the defenses. Companies and civilians alike should definitely do whatever they can to safeguard that information, but the reality is if someone wants the information badly enough they will get it no matter what the safeguards.

I mean, if my house gets robbed do I sure the company that made the lock because it was not strong enough to withstand that screwdriver or gunshot? Do I sue the company that built the house because the frame around the door was not strong enough to stand up to that swift kick? What about suing the lumber company for their low-grade wood that splintered so easily upon impact? No. That would be laughable. So, imho, is this.

Basically I just want this to end so we can all go on being excited discussing games instead of security and litigation and other boring shit I don't get excited by IRL.

This whole debacle used to be sort of funny especially watching the lunacy of harcore 'fanboys'.... however, this is just sad. I mean, I own a PS3 and a bunch of PS3 games like any of the fanboys. So now I have an obsolete Wii with one single game to look forward to and a worthless PS3 with really no games to look forward to since I can't play shit online. I guess I'll just have to stick to my 360.
