On contrary 3ds has big games (500k+) like FE, DQ, NSMB, animal crossing etc just this year.. And also solid mid tier games (150~300k) released each month like kid icarus etc.(last month's SQ4 is divinely good, btw. current goty for me.)
so far vita had one mid tier (P4G), an HD port. and that's it...
Handheld last gen served as a haven for many mid to small developers because of the low cost and relatively stable market. The development cost on vita is high (maker may as well put a vita game on ps3 like ps all-star. then why buy vita?) and the current install base cannot convince those mid tier developers to jump in.
It needs a massive new title that has mainstream appeal (Mario, mainline DQ, Monhun level) and probably a price cut to boost hardware sell, not just niche falcom games and miku games.
Yes 3ds also had a rough period but we all know Mario, animal crossing, FE, Smash Bros etc (and then MonHun) are on the horizon. Can AC and Blops do it for vita? Not sure. Both are spin-offs of perceived console/pc games...
lack of backward compatibility also hurts. There're still more PSP games getting released than Vita (in Japan).
As a PSP owner, I don't even see the Vita as a potential successor right now. It's a technological marvel, but it simply lacks games that can compete. I'm sure big games are coming, but that's exactly the great thing about old games: they can help to fill that gap.
/genius plan to save Sony
Hopefully it'll eventually grow to become a quality portable like the PSP did, but I'm not wasting money with an early purchase again. I'll be quite content with my 3DS, DS and PSP games until buying a vita makes more sense to me.
You're fucking Sony! One of the biggest electronics companies in the world, with your laptops, TVs and consoles selling like hotcakes, but you're having trouble getting support for the most powerful handheld on the market? You're having trouble getting companies to get behind it? Yeah, bullshit. You know what it is? You're lazy. You don't give a fuck, and you think people will just buy it because it has a PlayStation logo on it. You could get the support of any game company you want by waving some money in their faces, but you don't.
You just sit there and hope for people to buy a system that you barely support. My family wasted hard-earned money getting me one as a gift, and I feel angry that they spent cash getting me something that I can't very well play or look forward to anything on. I hate people wasting money on me, and I wish I could pay them back for the thing to get some guilt off of my mind. Game systems shouldn't bring you guilt, they should help you escape from guilt. I love the device, but you barely support it.
So, Sony, if you want to pull horseshit excuses out of your butt, go right ahead. But don't pretend like you can't get third-party devs interested in what is a essentially a portable PS3. That's B.S., and you know it.
topple that with other BC issues(portable ops and portable ops+ to name a few) not all PSP games are available on PSN that was launch on UMD(Metal Gear Acid, Crisis Core, Kingdom Hearts etc)
overprice memory cards, region free BUT you have to reset everything to use a new account region(who the fuck came up with this)
*Sigh
wow just wow sony.
like why arnt konami making castlevanias for it? why only nintendo portables? make a new castlevania SOTN sequel, watch that thing sell like the tits. just dont make it fuckin 3D, make it 2D like it should be.
Sprites aren't necessarily cheap either.
@elektro
Not many are actually naysaying here, we actually want to see this thing improve so we have a reason to purchase it
Sony needs to get more indie support. Indies seem like such a good fit for the vita.
To me that seems like the only logical solution. Having a steady flow of lower budget games regardless if it is exclusive or not will make the wait more bearable between bigger releases.
Seems to me that would take a lot of pressure off sony and grow better relations between consumers and developers.
A SOTN sequel would be wayyyy toooo successful. Sony and Konami would not know what to do with all that money. They do not want that kind of problem in their hands...
The bottom line is that there's higher quality handheld gaming going on elsewhere, so the Vita's technical specs are shrouded the lack of compelling software.
Really, there's no reason to not just go with the 3DS. Nintendo's covered the gaming spectrum from casual to hardcore. Not to mention that any CoD game that makes it's way to the Vita will be on the 3DS as well.
Really though, is anyone surprised that Sony still has their head in their ass?
I love the thing though (played it WAY more than than the 3DS) but there's no denying the slow release schedule. I just can't wait till the thing gets hacked so we can put some emulators on this powerful fucker.
seriously, yeah, the vita need some games, but that memory card thing was a shot to their own foot.
IMO Part of the main problem of the Vita. It keeps getting spin offs and ports and those are passed as the big titles. The Vita needs it's own series of games, not just "Me too!'s" of console ones.
The 3DS at least has the image of being it's own individual console, in both it's hardware and software. Always wanted a Vita over a 3DS but am absolutely glad I got the 3DS instead (It was more affordable.).
Call me crazy but all the shit you said against the vita can be said exactly about the 3ds, ports and spin offs of franchises already on the wii or previous nintendo consoles.
"I'm not losing hope yet. The 3DS hit the same snag at the start. The two consoles appear to be mirroring each other in a lot of respects."
Well, then Sony better make that price cut, and fast!
I wanted one, but at the current price point its a ripoff.
But then, Sony never did a good job of prOmoting the PSP. The homebrewers did all the work.
WHATS GOING ON HERE!!!
Seriously though, the problem isn't showing the systems prowess.. They know its there.. they just need to make the same ridiculous deals with companies as they do with their console games, as an incentive. Right now theres not a ton of reason for anyone (fans or developers) to really care about the Vita (sadly, cause its a great handheld.
"As always, I certainly hope the Vita does well, because I love it as a machine."
Oh, I bet you do love it as a machine.. You Robo-sexual, you. (theres one inside us all)
@Mike Shadows
Well, the 3DS also had help from the fact that Nintendo was able to rush forward some powerful games themselves. I think if they didn't buckle and do that, those games would have been much more spread out over the next few years.
Sony's got a problem where they want to show they have 3rd party support and don't seem to be doing much on their own end then talking up cross play -- but not really giving us more then a few promises that a handful of games that are still stuck in the pipeline will deliver. Priorities are all kinds of messed up.
@ Pajolero
Thats one of the most hilarious images I've ever seen on this site.
Seriously though, competing against a dominant Nintendo handheld with a device that isn't also a swiss army phone was a mistake wall street caught early on. Apple got it right by accident and almost reluctantly at first. Sony missed a huge opportunity here. Guess who was paying attention:

No, your complete right. It needs a system seller and people will want CoD on the go. Don't know if it'd be a pair that actually sells well together, but it couldn't hurt the Vita any more then its hurting now, right?
Nintendo started to make profit on the 3DS moreso because they cut the systems price, not directly from game titles (don't get me wrong though, having a strong list of titles definitely helps). If Sony doesn't do the same, then the Vita will ultimately end up living out the same fate as the psp.
It's really astounding how they can keep making the same mistakes over and over again
The Vita has not even been doing as well as the 3ds WAS when it was "failing", and has another problem the 3ds DIDN'T have: The 3ds.
Comparing the 2 situations is ridiculous, because they are completely different.
@sayword
I can't play Sound Shapes, but I personally doubt it is better than Kid Icarus...
"At first I wasn't interested in the VITA(I am a Nintendo fan), but from the moment I played my friends one and saw the glorious games and fantastic home console quality games, I knew I had to have one. It may not have a stellar lineup at the moment(Uncharted and Wipeout being the only must haves in my opinion), but a lot of massive games are coming this holiday season. From LittleBigPlanet, to Sony Battle Royale, to Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, and Need for Speed Most Wanted, the VITA is going to be a powerful and diverse system. Plus, this bundle in specific looks amazing. The white VITA looks stunning, and I can't wait to get my hands on this thing. Plus, it comes with Assassin's Creed III : Liberation, which, while not one of my most anticipated games, still looks like a great AAA title. Overall, the VITA had a rough start, but it is gearing up to be a powerful system with a massive library of must have games."
