Problem with Sony's whole "re-package on PS3" plan is, anyone with a decent PC (and, to make it completely legal, a PS2) can already play any PS2 games they own - in HD. I haven't tested if standard PC DVD drives can read the disk straight off yet, but it seems possible.
Thus, the only reason to buy upscaled last-gen ports is if you don't already own them. Game, set, match.

The conspiracy theorist in me says this is so they can sell ports of PS2 titles much higher than they sell them on PSN...
This isn't entirely true... Fintal Fantasy 10 is coming out on both PS3 and Vita, right? I'm sure more will be coming in the future....
why would they try to get ps2 games working when they can get full price for enhanced ports like Nintendo does with for example starfox64. Give it a bit of a graphical boost maybe make a few minor edits. If they do that they have the profit right there.

All I know is that it will be really dirty if Sony starts coming out with special Vita editions of PS2 games because this thing conveniently can't play PSN editions. People will run out and buy some kind of God of war port for it, and I'll ask, why are you buying that, you already own the PS2 God of War, and the God of war collection, and they'll reply with some consumerist crap "I love conveniently having my ps2 games in one place, and playing it on the go is just icing on the cake herpa derp!!!"

Its because some companies are already porting their games to the vita such as Atlus. basically sony would rather resell these games to you for a much larger price than just allow you to play them anyway.
It seems to me that it COULD BE that there is not a good "software solution" to emulating games at good enough quality to make PS2/PS3 games play on Vita. It COULD BE that while it might be possible in some games it isn't possible for most and there could be bad glitches no matter what.

Hey Jim Sterling, yesterday you wrote an article making a big show about Vita menu music. Did you even took the time to go to the settings and look if there was a way to turn it off before talk trashing the PsVita? No you didn't. Let me inform you that there is a setting that turn the menu music off So before talking trash about something at least take the time to do some research. It seems you have been assigned by destructoid to write trash about psvita.

screw you Sony. hopefully some psp homebrew teams will crack Vita as well and we'll get loads of emulators for 5th and 6th gen consoles. ability to buy and play some of those old ps2 games was one of the reasons i wanted Vita.

3DS plays all those GameCube games, then? I'm sure Vita's game options will open up over time. It would detract from the launch titles to have the entire Playstation legacy available at launch.

So the 3DS can play all those Gamecube and Wii games, huh? Don't you think your expectations for this system may be set too high for it just releasing next week? Sure, I would like a portable system that could play every game and print cocaine, but that might be a bit too much to ask for by the week of launch. And doesn't the Vita already have one of the strongest lineups for any system release in the last decade? Give them some credit. I'm sure it'll take some time to optimize PSN content that isn't PSP stuff (granted, the lack of UMD transfer support is lame) to be compatible on the Vita. So we can probably put the Sony hate off for a day and a half at least.

it's ok, custom firmware should fix all the interface issues, and there's already a genesis emulator running on japanese versions. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before we can run PS2, android, gamecube, wii, xbox, xbox 360, Ps3, pc, IOS, and Wii U games. until then, i'll just buy games i guess
So, I must be reading this wrong. I have heard nothing on PS2 Classics compatibility with Vita so that's not an issue. But this article also implies you can't play your PS3 titles through the system. Strangely though, I recall just seeing an advertisement for the system which showcased playing "anywhere" or "all the time" or something along those lines, wherein the guy in the video started gaming on his PS3, then moved to Vita as he left his house and meandered the streets.

I know quite a few people who won't be getting a Vita after hearing this news. They were convinced Sony would let you download a ton of PS2 classics, and that is pretty much the main reason why they wanted one.

So the only way to play my PS3 library on a Vita is to have hacked versions of both? I thought I could play "the entire library" of PS3 games in my hand.

The Vita could be a huge success if Sony was willing to go all the way with it.

Technically, you don't need to have hacked version of both, only a hacked PS3.
Because the permission on what game to allow remoteplay is done in the PS3 not Vita. hacked PS3 can change this permission.
Right now only games that support remoteplay for PSP, can be run in Vita.

I'm not asking for the Vita to play PS2 disks. I'm just saying that it would be sleazy of sony to make a line of ps2 game ports when people already own upwards of 3 copies of those games and they refuse to allow people to play ps2 digital games run on the Vita. Sony is actively working to eliminate backwards compatibility, even when it makes little to no sense making it so people can't take their physical games to the next console, and they're also pushing towards people having to buy their games digitally so that they are stuck with a bunch of content licenses only to find out that Sony's NEXT system isn't compatible with them for no reason at all. Sony is content with selling people their own games over and over again every single gen which is like I said, sleazy.
No reason to remove PS3's backwards compatiblity, they could get PS2 games on the Vita, they only did the PSP transfer program in Japan, the Experia play couldn't access your preexisting PSN library, etc. I can't be the only one who sees this?

Why? Being able to play PS2 games on the Vita would be a selling point, it's the most successful videogame system.
And one day they'll change their mind and release a firmware that allows it and all will be well. It sucks, but the library of PS1 games is pretty big, so, I'd rather them get that to the Vita first, and get it to it right, before they bother with another huge library.

Maybe publishers would be concerned that they would have to cater to a portable market they're not interested in, or vice versa? Maybe it wouldn't work for every single game, but some it would? Who knows.
Still sucks though. I could go with a little Skyrim in my pocket, that's for sure, and it sucks that they just squashed that completely.

I don't have too much beef cause my fav ps2 games are already coming to vita. E.g persona 4 and p3p is a psp title so will be able to play both! But for people who like other games it does indeed suck balls and Sony seem to make their lives so much harder for themselves, by fucking over consumers hopes and dreams!
